Stupid other driver

Where I drop my kids off at Granny's is a small side road off a residential road in a small town. The side road is a dead end that leads to a health centre and day care centre. It has two lanes at the junction with the 'main' road but quickly narrows for a short length as you go towards the health centre. When it was built they didn't leave enough space for full width pavements so there are narrow pavements and then a bumpy kerbed bit to stop cars going on the pavements. I've added a rough sketch.

I generally reverse into the side road and stop after Granny's parked car down the side road to drop my kids off. It only takes a minute. But the stupid cleaner for the day care centre tends to arrive at about the time this is happening (7am). She drives round the corner into the side road on the wrong side of the road (because of where Granny's car is parked near the corner) and then stops when she sees my car.

She won't reverse back into the 'main' road to let me out and seems to think there isn't room for her to pull over to the left after Granny's car. She just sits there waiting for me to reverse further down the side road to a wider bit so she can get past to the care centre car park.

It's still dark at 7am. When she sees my lights why can't she just stay in the 'main' road, or behind Granny's car until I've dropped the kids off, or pull over as soon as she's past it? I think there's enough room for her to pull over. She must be a rubbish driver if she thinks there isn't.

The way your dear granny is parked is an absolute piss take and close to a junction is actually illegal. 🍿

For starters, I work in highways and grannys car is parked far too close to the junction, especially if that is a main road. She is causing an obstruction and is parked dangerously.

You are also causing an obstruction stopping to drop your kids off, park properly and appropriately.

You should reverse back, the bus should not be reversing onto a main road, that's so much more dangerous than you just reversing back and letting them through.

If it is that much of an issue for you, have a work with your council about parking on the street and they will make it 10x worse for you and granny.

NotObligedToArgueWithStrangers · 10/11/2023 13:49

You are blocking the road. YABU park somewhere else.

Chlorinara · 10/11/2023 13:50

I agree @RiverCartwright OP won't be back.

Nice effort though, with the diagram and everything.

Sirzy · 10/11/2023 13:53

So you mum/MIL is parked dangerously close to the junction. You’re parked blocking the road. But you believe the woman who is just trying to drive to work is the one in the wrong?

EvilElsa · 10/11/2023 13:53

Granny is parked dangerously and illegally. Park properly and drop your kids off.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 10/11/2023 13:53

Runssometimes · 10/11/2023 11:52

You should not reverse from a side road onto a main road. It’s right there in the Highway Code -201.

The cleaner isn’t stupid and would be obstructing the junction if she waited behind granny’s car which frankly is parked dangerously if the diagram is accurate.

I call a reverse. There is 2 stupid people in this scenario and its not the cleaner.

EvilElsa · 10/11/2023 13:54

I actually call a reverse too

APocketOfGooseFood · 10/11/2023 13:59

This must be a reverse.

OP, you shouldn’t be forced to reverse into the main road OR to wait for her to unload her children. Keep on sitting tight until this dreadful, entitled, foolish danger to other road users stops blocking the highway. Neither she nor her mother have a clue how to use the road.

user1471517900 · 10/11/2023 14:02

This is so clearly a reverse thread. These are always written so so badly.

Londonrach1 · 10/11/2023 14:06

It's illegal to reverse onto a main road.

This is so clearly a reverse thread. These are always written so so badly.

Quite a good diagram though!

BitofaStramash · 10/11/2023 14:21

Granny's car is blocked too close to the junction and you are blocking the road.

Its not the other driver who is being stupid, inconsiderate and breaking the Highway code.

Must be a reverse but points for the excellent diagram

Tinkerbyebye · 10/11/2023 11:49

Sit it out. I did that when it was blatantly my tight of way and I was more than half way along a row of parked cars on the other side of the road and a driver, who clearly saw my carried on past them on my side of the road. She indicated for my to pull into someone’s drive so she could get past, and wouldn’t move. So I turned my engine off, got a bottle of water and swigged from it and sat there. She moved

That’s totally different OP is blocking the rd and due to shit Parking by granny wouldn’t know OP was there till it’s to late
also you don’t reverse on to main rd

and if we’re playing hardball cleaner could just abandon her car go to work and leave OP sat there

all this could be avoided if you don’t block rd and park too near junctions

Gormley · 11/11/2023 13:10

First, thank you for all the replies. Now it's confession time. I'm the OP and also the stupid cleaner of the opening post. I know I'm "that stupid cleaner" because Granny of the poorly parked car at the top of the road started shouting rather scoffily last time this car confrontation occurred. Fortunately I didn't hear much but it was clearly all my fault coming to work at just the time when her offspring wanted to drop kids off.

Thing is, I wanted to tell the story from the Kid-Dropper-Offer (KDO) point of view to see if I could make it alright and ascertain if it really was me being unreasonable all the time, sitting there, making KDO reverse so I could continue.

I've been working at that centre for over six years and the KDO problem has only just arisen (happened three times so far), although the cars parked too near to the junction have always been there. Usually there are two, sometimes three. I suspect reporting them has been done but nothing has come of it. They could park in the health centre car park but then they'd have to walk 50 or so metres.

I'm a gran myself and know that Granny above is not a horrid person because she came out to help me when I fainted in the street near there several years ago. I was travelling to work by bus at that time. I don't know if she knows I'm the same person in the obstructionist car.

It doesn't work, telling things from the other point of view. Just tell the story from your own perspective. Confused

Gormley · 11/11/2023 13:35

Trying to understand the other point of view always helps.

OP posts:
MegaMay · 11/11/2023 14:25

Report the cars obstructing the junction to the council. Might have been reported sure but probably not because everyone will assume someone else has done it.

Sure she might not be a bad person but she's clearly kinda shitty and entitled.

savoycabbage · 11/11/2023 14:27

Gormley · 11/11/2023 13:35

Trying to understand the other point of view always helps.

But that's not what happens when you post a reverse.

People can see things from another point of view without you having to write it from another point of view.

Chlorinara · 11/11/2023 14:36

Gormley · 11/11/2023 13:35

Trying to understand the other point of view always helps.

It's also a great way to irritate the people you're trying to get replies from.

Gormley · 11/11/2023 14:39

I'm new to this lark. I wrote it down the way I did mostly for my benefit, and it did help. Anyway, it's a standard philosophical practice for gaining understanding. I can't tell in advance what other people will understand.

I now understand what all the comments about reverses were about.

So they'll reply with irritation. I didn't notice a great deal of irritation in the replies people posted.

OP posts:
WrongSwanson · 11/11/2023 14:46

You don't need to post a reverse to do that.

OhNoForever · 11/11/2023 14:49

A reversing reverse 😂
