Equines are worth every penny ( you won't ever be rich in ££ but you will enrich your life instead/. Everything about them is wonderful. From the scent of their coats, to their big beautiful dark eyes, their beautiful mane and tail after a good brushing and the sound they make when they chomp. You can watch them for hours and marvel at how wonderful nature is. Mucking out and poo picking is good exercise as is riding out in the countryside.

If you have a good loving bond with your horse everything is worth it: time, money, experiences and memories.

If you don't it can be a nightmare.

elastamum · 09/11/2023 12:52

A horse. I bought my first in my 20's when I graduated and have kept them ever since. I even built my own stables. My retirement present to myself was another horse!

Star Wars At-AT model. £29.99 in 1985.

The sparkly heeled shoes from Woolworths mentioned above.
Mum told me shoes would destroy my feet and give me bunions and my toenails would all drop off if they weren't from Clarks.

I feel like I had a very small window in my life when slippers are not the answer to every question and I will never want shoes like the plastic sparkly heels from Woolworths ever again.

I wanted tap dancing but my DM was prejudiced against it (I think it was associated with "putting your daughter on the stage"). I started to learn a few years ago but then I broke my leg! (not tap dancing!)

My mum was raised to believe that 'dancing is a sin' so I wasn't allowed. By the time she'd realized it wasn't, I was no longer interested.

She was also raised to believe that smoking, drinking, secular music, playing cards, and movies were also sins. She eventually realized that not only were they NOT sins, they were fun!! Except smoking, she always believed that was terrible.

I did it. Bought an electric guitar when I was 40. Was always going to learn to play it properly when I retired....then got arthritis in my fingers so gave it to the local youth club. Hopefully some teenager enjoys it.

mondaytosunday · 09/11/2023 14:33

Well I always wanted a horse. Thought I could keep in it my bedroom closet.
However now that I realise you can't keep a horse in a bedroom but needs a nice stable and a field my savings wouldn't cover anything like the cost!

A Sylvanian families tree house and camper van

I had several Sylvanian Family bits as a child, caravan (the old green and red 'gypsy' style one) vintage house, stable, pony and cart and school. My mum decided to clear space and 'asked' me if I minded selling it (it wasn't really a choice) then she sold the whole lot, furniture and Sylvanians included for... £15... I started repurchasing the things I used to have a couple years ago, it is costing me hundreds... I'm only missing my stable now, my kids broke the cart so most of the precious bits are packed away in a tub now. I've also bought items I didn't used to have if I find them available for cheap, so I have 2 starter houses for the kids, an extra vintage school and a Tree House!

I almost bought a Cabin Lodge from a second hand shop yesterday but decided it was too expensive and was missing too many parts (plus I don't really actually need it).

For me it would be my Sylvanian Stable I would buy more Polly Pocket sets too and maybe some Lego, we only had a small selection of random bricks. I remember playing with some mini bricks at an old family members (or possibly family friend, I was too young to remember properly), but they were like proper mini red bricks and a rubbery sort of material and could be slotted together, always wondered what brand they were and if they could still be bought.

A Lego pirate ship, with the treasure chest, gold coins and sharks.

KStockHERO · 09/11/2023 14:49

A Little Tikes Coupe - My mum said they were 'common' so I couldn't have one, even though we were common as muck ourselves.

A VHS of The Little Mermaid - Still no idea why my parents didn't get me this. My friend's dad made pirate videos and when offered one to borrow I always picked The Little Mermaid. I'd have loved my own copy.

A bottle of Sunny Delight - My mum was very skeptical about it anyway and then came the reports of children being turned orange so that was the end of that.

A nose piercing - Again, my mum felt they were too common. Then they fell out of fashion. By the time they came back around and/or I was old enough not to care about fashion, I was too scared of the pain to actually have it done.

A Pogo stick.

I rode before I could walk and had a very outdoors active childhood but a Pogo stick was deemed an accident waiting to happen!

If you ever get these don’t do what I did. Aged 7, I was ecstatic when I opened these on Christmas morning as I’d wanted a pair for ages. I put them on and was so thrilled I leapt through the air and snapped one upon landing. I was heartbroken. I’d only had them for less than a minute. 😥

Soapon · 09/11/2023 18:49

I’m inspired to start hunting down the sylvanian families now!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/11/2023 21:07

A Sindy house with real Sindy furniture, and some proper Sindy clothes and shoes. TBF my mum put in so much effort making these things for me / but I would have loved the 'real thing'.

I'm actually thinking of buying myself a dolls house!

SmokeyToo · 10/11/2023 00:01

@Mollyplop999 I really wish I could, but sadly I can't afford it. I'm on my own, so every penny goes into paying the mortgage and keeping the house in tip top shape. I shall have to be content with my cats!

Being an adult sucks, sometimes...

Mollyplop999 · 10/11/2023 18:20

SmokeyToo yes it really does. I don't suppose you live anywhere near Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border?

Sunandnomoon · 10/11/2023 18:33

I did it.

a kitten

a piano

a slushy maker
