Door to door poppy collector voicing her opinion.

One of the people doing door to door poppy collecting posted something like this on our village FB page.

"To the lady I have knocked for five years. I won't knock again, quite clear. To the man who said he doesn't support the charity, I won't knock again."

It's in amongst the thanks and wows and stuff. I suppose a couple of people were rude to her. I don't think that's nice, but I really don't think it's good form to then slag them off on FB. What is the point? Not when you're volunteering to raise money.

She has posted anonymously, though everyone knows who it is, because there are only 2 people collecting in that part of the village and she has a very distinctive writing style.

I'm sorry but why is this an issue for you?

TallulahBetty · 06/11/2023 11:30

I can't stand these passive aggressive 'to the lady who....' etc posts on fb. Even worse when you're the face of a charity.

Ponoka7 · 06/11/2023 11:32

She's out of order, people circumstances change and she needs to be reminded that charity extends to everyone and isn't compulsory.

yarnwitch · 06/11/2023 11:35

Yanbu it's unprofessional and inappropriate. Perhaps post and remind her that giving money to cold callers isn't compulsory.

Jellycats4life · 06/11/2023 11:37

I’ve never heard of door to door poppy sellers, although I bet it’s a massive ego trip for the village busybody and that’s why she does it!

Coffeerum · 06/11/2023 11:38

YANBU it is incredibly unprofessional and off putting.

SirenSays · 06/11/2023 11:38

Hmm it's an anonymous post, they don't want her to knock, she won't be back. Seems like no big deal to me.

2dogsandabudgie · 06/11/2023 11:42

She hasn't actually named the people so it could be anyone, no one will know who she's talking about. Thought you weren't allowed to go door to door selling poppies now.

Manadou · 06/11/2023 11:42

I'd send them away with a flea in their ear if they tried that malarkey with me. And I lost a relative in Northern Ireland.

But she’s shaming people publicly and calling them out for not supporting the Royal British Legion. That’s the problem. It’s not mandatory to donate or wear a poppy. Besides, maybe the people who didn’t want to interact with the poppy seller prefer to buy theirs at the local supermarket or whatever 🤷‍♀️

SisterMichaelsHabit · 06/11/2023 11:45

She sounds like a pompous arse who feels entitled to people buying her poppies because she's gone to their house to sell them.
I wonder if she runs an MLM on the side?
Serious entitled behaviour to try and embarrass people into buying poppies by posting anonymous comments about other people online, it implies "buy my poppies or I'll do this to you as well". I don't think the charity would be very impressed.

Prelapsarianhag · 06/11/2023 11:47

I don't give money to any fucker knocking on my door.

TheresaCrowd · 06/11/2023 11:47

I also thought RBL banned doorstep sales but could be wrong.

kittie01 · 06/11/2023 11:49

Wearing a poppy to celebrate murdering people is disgusting. No one should be proud that they’d country slaughtered innocent people regardless of where they are from. Not a popular opinion but…

TrashedSofa · 06/11/2023 11:50

She sounds like a twat.

PinkRoses1245 · 06/11/2023 11:52

YANBU, it's totally inappropriate to sell poppies door to door. If someone wants one, they can proactively get one.

welcometothnuthouse · 06/11/2023 11:53

I read somewhere that this was stopped back in 2016 as there were problems, including knocking doors after dark.🤔.

ManateeFair · 06/11/2023 11:54

No charity collector should be publicly guilt-tripping people for not donating to their charity, whether they are paid or a volunteer. It's massively unprofessional of her to do this, anonymously or not, and the RBL should be training volunteers much more effectively and briefing them on what is/isn't OK.

The RBL does nowhere near enough to counteract negative/bullying behaviour connected with enforced and/or inappropriate poppy-related stuff in general, which is one of the reasons I no longer donate to them.

Personally I wear a poppy to remember people who died in war defending our freedom.
As long as there are tyrants and dictators we will need wars to stand up to them.

Me neither. I donate to various charities by monthly direct debit and I make ad-hoc donations online or to charities collecting in the street when I want to support a cause, but I don't give money or buy anything to anyone who knocks on my door, ever.

I agree with this. I always think it’s bizarre that poppy wearing on TV becomes mandatory and there are complaints when people are seen without one. Forcing American celebs to wear a poppy on chat shows etc. It’s bizarre and no other charity emblem gets the same rabid treatment.

But the point is that you can remember people in whatever way you like. You don't have to do it by wearing a poppy.

Also, it's largely inaccurate to say that those who have died in wars were 'defending our freedom'. And furthermore, the people who died on the opposing sides are no more or less worthy of remembrance than the people who died fighting on 'our' side.

squashi · 06/11/2023 12:06

Jeez, I hope nobody ever comes to my door for this reason.

I agree that lots of people die in war that's obvious.

Also of course you don't need to wear a poppy to do so. But as in so many things the poppy is symbolic and reminds us and other people.

By remembering the devastation of war, maybe everyone on both sides will be less inclined to engage in brinkmanship.

So as a matter of interest, what should the Ukrainians do? Just open the doors of their country to Putin? So he walks right in. And then he decides he wants Poland too, or any other country he is a neighbour to?
