One of the people doing door to door poppy collecting posted something like this on our village FB page.

"To the lady I have knocked for five years. I won't knock again, quite clear. To the man who said he doesn't support the charity, I won't knock again."

It's in amongst the thanks and wows and stuff. I suppose a couple of people were rude to her. I don't think that's nice, but I really don't think it's good form to then slag them off on FB. What is the point? Not when you're volunteering to raise money.

She has posted anonymously, though everyone knows who it is, because there are only 2 people collecting in that part of the village and she has a very distinctive writing style.

@TeenDivided Personally I wear a poppy to remember people who died in war defending our freedom.

Really naive to assume everyone taking part in a war on 'our' side is defending freedom and everyone on the other side is a baddie.

Hooplahooping · 06/11/2023 12:08

Our local village poppy dealer tried to shame me because I’d bought them from a different seller. Some people just need a reason to get a grump on.

I guess the correct response is probably pity really - that someone is so psychological un selfaware that they behave like that… but I think I’d just roll my eyes, cringe in vicarious embarrassment for them, and let it go. Every village has got its busybodies, don’t let them interfere with your peace!

I at no point said everyone on the other side is a 'baddie.'
Lots of people in wars are conscripts and would rather be safe at home.

CanIPetThatDawg · 06/11/2023 12:10

People like this woman probably think that collecting door to door gives them kind of moral authority to lecture others.

If I suspected I was one of the people being anonymously chastised on the village FB page I’d respond addressing them by their name ‘Are you talking about me, Janet Smith?’. Give the FB group a proper show.

And yet you aren't wearing the poppy for them as you have made the comment on 'fighting for our freedom'.

The RBL does nowhere near enough to counteract negative/bullying behaviour connected with enforced and/or inappropriate poppy-related stuff in general, which is one of the reasons I no longer donate to them.

I agree with this. I always think it’s bizarre that poppy wearing on TV becomes mandatory and there are complaints when people are seen without one. Forcing American celebs to wear a poppy on chat shows etc. It’s bizarre and no other charity emblem gets the same rabid treatment.

Your post reminded me of this Grin

So shes actually more of a 'poppy tax' collector then. The fine of not buying one is passive agression and shame!! She's the worst kind of 'charitable' person. Everybody doesn't donate to the same causes. I've a friend who only donates to animal charities because she says the government should be paying for humans health and well being, but animals get no help from them.
When it comes to poppies, there is a massive guilt trip about buying one and wearing one, which I really don't agree with! Those comments would be enough for me to not buy from this woman! It makes it less of a donation and more of a tax, if you have to do it!

ehb102 · 06/11/2023 12:16

As a poppy campaign organiser I had to agree all kinds of behaviour standards. Not sure this person is abiding by them all.

I'd go down a similar route but mine would be something along the lines of "Where is our usual poppy seller this year? I had some stuck-up self-important bitch coming round instead."

Wearing a poppy to celebrate murdering people is disgusting. No one should be proud that they’d country slaughtered innocent people regardless of where they are from. Not a popular opinion but…”

People who fought in WW2 were defending their families and homes from invasion by a lunatic. Perhaps read a history book.

Pinning a poppy to the Cookie Monster does seem a tad strange. And he's not wearing any clothes so they had to pin it to his pelt. Poor Cookie Monster.

I though this waddling poppy football mascot was pretty undignified.

@CharlotteBog
Nothing changes because of her rather pointless statement, so I would not be bothered by the statement. I suspect that she was just expressing her frustration, but in reality nothing will really change. No real harm has been done; nor has she increased the likelihood of more contributions.

I also thought RBL banned doorstep sales but could be wrong.

If this has been banned ( and it should be) someone needs to be pointing this out on the facebook thread, to point out that this person is breaching the rules of the RBLL. That should sort the sanctimonious busybody out!

millymog11 · 06/11/2023 12:25

As much as I support the poppy appeal myself, have bought a poppy (multiple for me and family members and made donations etc) and wholeheartedly agree with Remembrance Sunday, I strongly feel that any kind of door to door charity collection is just wrong. You should not knock on someones door and ask for a donation to charity, however small the expectation is and however much the public sentiment is in support of that charity.
You do not know the personal circumstances of the people inside that property, you are literally making an assumption when you knock that they can afford to make a donation which, in today's day and age is outrageous.
By all means have people selling near the shops /park/public places where people can go up and donate/buy poppies etc. But door to door anything (unless you are the postman) is just not on in 2023.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 06/11/2023 12:26

Just ignore her posts. She clearly feels strongly about poppy donation and poppy wearing, it is an emotive subject as numerous threads on MN can attest to.

If she feels strongly about poppy wearing and donations she can post an appeal type post. Anonymously slagging someone off online for not donating does absolutely nothing for the cause, apart from make her look like a bullying arsehole, and by proxy makes the BRL look bad.

What she is doing selling door to door is also banned, I’d report this personally, again, doing no favours for the cause at all. Self serving egotists rarely do though.

ehb102 · 06/11/2023 12:31

@kittie01 We need to remember so we do not repeat the horror. That's the whole point. Lest we forget. Millions died who shouldn't have died. Let's never do it again - and if we haven't managed to do away with wars we will certainly remain aware that our overlords do not necessarily have our best interests at heart.

I am am sure there were some very nice Nazis. Unfortunately my family never got the chance to meet all of them as they were trying to get across mainland Europe without actually meeting any. The ones they were hiding from wanted to put them in a gas chamber.

War is very divided in that you are either on one side or the other.

I think most people equate poppies with the 2 world wars and as far as I’m concerned most British soldiers believed they were defending freedom. And many died doing so.
As for baddies, I certainly have great sympathy for any soldiers from any country fighting in a war that is rarely of their making and which they have no choice but to fight or be imprisoned.

It doesn't though, the poppy officially represents all conflicts the British army has been involved in and there are plenty of reasons people may not support that.
People who don't wear or donate to the poppy appeal shouldn't have the added inference that they are against freedom. It's so ill-informed and narrow minded and probably the exact sort of thinking from the poppy seller in OP's post1
