To not replace the oven?

Jtdoyoveme · 05/11/2023 20:58

My oven has broken today. To replace will be around £320 plus £65 fitting. AIBU not to replace it?
There is only me and DD (age 10) in the house.

I have a hob, microwave, slow cooker, steamer and air fryer.

Since having my air fryer, I have only used my oven for pizza or on the odd occasion I cooked for visitors. If I don’t replace it, the extra space will allow me for an American fridge freezer which I have always wanted 😬

Sounds like you don't need one. Especially with everything else you've got, and the air fryer. In fact, you've given me the idea now that if my oven ever breaks i'm just gonna buy an air fryer instead. Easy to carry back from the shop and no installation fees.

flufferknutter · 05/11/2023 21:03

Our oven broke five months ago and we haven't replaced it as we have the air fryer. We're managing fine. The only thing we can't have is shop bought pizzas.

We have considered buying a mini oven so we could have a pizza, but haven't got round to it. We might not bother. We use the broken oven for storage.

Temporaryname158 · 05/11/2023 21:04

No oven would put me off buying a house, however if you don’t intend to sell and can’t think of any meals you couldn’t make in the other items listed then go for it.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 05/11/2023 21:07

No space for an oven would put me off buying a house.
But if you don't use it, and aren't planning on moving, go for it, and use the house the way you want.

Doggymummar · 05/11/2023 21:08

Our broke before Christmas last year, landlord replaced it but we have never used it. We use the hob bit tho

Jtdoyoveme · 05/11/2023 21:09

Yes I totally get that about putting off, but if I ever came to sell (have been here 13 years and not planning on moving for the foreseeable) then I would be ok with getting it done to keep value when needed

My oven broke about 3 years ago and I’ve never replaced it. Rarely miss it.

Iloveanicegarden · 05/11/2023 21:13

My oven died last year and I'd always wanted a side and hide - so I got one, then fuel prices went stratospheric and I now only use it once a week if that. I've got a Remouska and I use that so much - even for full roasts

GetWhatYouWant · 05/11/2023 21:14

Don't you ever bake a cake? Make a pie? Make lasagne? Roast a whole chicken? I use my oven several times a week, can't imagine how I'd cook without one! Today made chicken tartiflette in a large tray, not possible without an oven as far as I can see.

coldcallerbaiter · 05/11/2023 21:19

Local second hand one? Off eBay? People get rid when remodelling for a lot less. Is it built in?

Gifgirl · 05/11/2023 21:19

Just for info, you absolutely can cook pizza in the air fryer. Just slice it before it goes in, so it fits. Cooks perfectly.

ButtonFork · 05/11/2023 21:19

Depends what you cook I guess. See how you get on.

An American style fridge freezer will cost more than the figure you quote for an oven and be less useful for a household with just one adult and one child I would have thought.

I’ve never heard of those. I’ll have a look!

It will cost more, but would be more useful as I only use the oven a handful of times

I’m not a baker unfortunately 😬 we have lots of pasta dishes, curries, jacket potatoes.

today we had a roast dinner done with the air fryer and steamer

Yes I just crack a thin base oven pizza in my hands until it fits in air fryer. Might be randomly sized pieces but it tastes good.
Not piled on top of each other, arranged at angles so air can circulate.

Yes I could look at that. I would still need to pay someone to fit it. I’m thinking more of the space I gain by not replacing it

All of those can be done in airfryer.

Onceuponaheatache · 05/11/2023 21:24

I only ever use my oven if I am doing a big roast dinner or the long part baked baguettes. Otherwise it is all on the hob or the airfryer.

For what it is worth, if you buy fresh pizza and cut it up before putting it in you can cook pizza in the air fryer

squidgybits · 05/11/2023 21:28

My air fryer has 3 shelves and a rotisserie, I cook pizza and cakes easily

SheikhDjibouti · 05/11/2023 21:52

I always wanted an American style fridge freezer, had the kitchen redone and got one, and just ended up a bit meh about it. I didn’t have one when I actually lived in the US, should have learned from that.

If there’s only the two of you in the house then it’ll be way bigger than you need.

Cut the pizza in half and put in your air fryer

Or buy those pizza baguettes

I don't use my oven much either!!

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/11/2023 22:43

No one having turkey for Christmas then?

Takeaminute · 05/11/2023 22:46

Seems like you don't need an oven. I rarely use mine nowadays
