To not replace the oven?

Jtdoyoveme · 05/11/2023 20:58

My oven has broken today. To replace will be around £320 plus £65 fitting. AIBU not to replace it?
There is only me and DD (age 10) in the house.

I have a hob, microwave, slow cooker, steamer and air fryer.

Since having my air fryer, I have only used my oven for pizza or on the odd occasion I cooked for visitors. If I don’t replace it, the extra space will allow me for an American fridge freezer which I have always wanted 😬

No one having turkey for Christmas then?

Turkey crown..in thr air fryer

WhyDoIBloodyBother · 05/11/2023 22:55

Ours went the other day, it was only the element & quite easy to replace. Could it be something like that? Worth a look anyway.

Mossstitch · 05/11/2023 23:46

I didn't have one for years at a different house as always planning to have a new kitchen but waiting to afford it. I had a combination microwave that I baked bread, cakes, pizza and did a roast in it.

PollyPut · 06/11/2023 00:09

If you want your DD to learn how to make cakes (and the joy of eating them) then you will need an oven

Froooty · 06/11/2023 01:09

When I moved into my first place in the UK in 2017, I was thinking how expensive it would be to heat that huge oven just to cook a pizza for ten minutes. I bought a cheapy 9 litre mini oven once I read the reviews and saw that it would use about 80% less power. If I remember right it was about £30. I am sure I've saved WAY more in power costs than the purchase price.

I still have it and still don't use the big oven. I do have to cut a frozen pizza to make it fit, but that's fine by me, I live alone so who cares if I eat the first half while the second is still cooking? I've made cakes in it too and amazing cheese toastie melts. Oven chips, fish fingers, kievs, whatever, it has enough room for most of the "serves two" ideas I can think of.

Now that a baby is on the way I'm looking at one of the slightly bigger kinds of mini oven which have the hotplates on top. It will still save loads compared with the big oven that's switched off at the wall. I still figure it won't be an issue for another year or so. No regrets.

Pictured: similar one to my 9L, now avail at The Range for £34. Amazon has a 16L one for about £40 which I'm thinking about.

No. My DD is with her dad every other Christmas and we go out the year she is with me

Thank you. The door broke off last year so was hard to open and then the grill went. It’s old so was falling apart

Perfect thank you I’ll have a look.

i am going to give it until the end of the month and see how many times I say ‘I wish I had an oven’ and go from there

Not true. You can do anything in an air fryer

greenacrylicpaint · 06/11/2023 06:30

is your microwave a combi one?

we use that instead of the 'big' oven for smaller things.
it fits a single frozen pizza.

samepasswordforall1 · 06/11/2023 08:10

My oven broke a year or so, it was old and basically falling apart like yours OP. I bought a basic cheap Tower manual airfryer and have only used the oven for a Goose last Christmas. However I do use the hob quite a lot and unsure what would take the place of this if I was to actually remove the whole cooker. How would I fry or boil an egg, how would I prepare a white sauce etc? I've got a instant pot but only use it for soup really

CesareBorgia · 06/11/2023 08:11

The big oven of my double oven broke a couple of months ago and I haven't fixed/replaced it yet. We have an air fryer, a microwave, a remoska and a slow cooker.

exactly! My hob is separate to my oven as the oven was built in so I will still have hob to cook eggs, pasta, stir fry etc on

really? I didn't think it would make cakes as they typically need some time for air bubbles to create and rise?

coldcallerbaiter · 06/11/2023 16:57

Get an oven and store plates in it!

junbean · 06/11/2023 17:03

We just figured out how to cook a frozen pizza in the air fryer. Just let it thaw enough to cut it into slices then place the slices in and cook at a slightly lower temp than you would in the oven. We are moving into a tiny home with no oven and I have figured out a way to make anything baked in the air fryer. An oven is so unnecessary, used too much energy, and heats the house too much in the summer anyway!

My oven died last year and I'd always wanted a side and hide - so I got one, then fuel prices went stratospheric and I now only use it once a week if that. I've got a Remouska and I use that so much - even for full roasts

My oven broke years ago and I bought a Remoska and never looked back. We did get a new ovem when we had the kitchen done, and when we moved here, to France, I took the oven and hob out and put a cupboard in, and use an induction hob which can go into the hall cupboard when we aren't using it, and a small table top oven for pizzas and pies or cakes. With the Remoska for all in one meals.

Makes a small kitchen much more user friendly.

Wonderously · 06/11/2023 17:06

May just need an electrical repair to the oven which may be much cheaper then replacing

Our oven broke five months ago and we haven't replaced it as we have the air fryer. We're managing fine. The only thing we can't have is shop bought pizzas.

We have considered buying a mini oven so we could have a pizza, but haven't got round to it. We might not bother. We use the broken oven for storage.

Lol I just commented about this. Just let the pizza thaw enough to cut into slices then cook those in the air fryer. Time & temp probably vary by model, but I used a slightly lower temp and just kept checking until they were done. I've done it twice so far and it was a lot faster and better than an oven! We were able to fit a whole pizza in at once.

I've made cake! Takes some experimenting. Almost all of my experiments end up using more time and lower temp.

We did the cutting up thing and it was a bit annoying. I've bought some mini pizzas in Iceland today so I'll try them tomorrow I think.

The main oven on our range cooker packed up on Xmas day last year, midway through roasting spuds. The air fryer saved the day and to date we haven't repaired the oven. We do use the other smaller oven about 1-2 times a week but there are 5 of us. The air fryer is what we use most. With what you have I think you could manage really well for two of you. Our main oven is now where we store pans and the toasty maker!

CocoPlum · 06/11/2023 17:44

I'd replace it, your air fryer, slow cooker and steamer with a giant ninja 15-in-1. I got mine when I was renovating the kitchen and I've used the oven less than 5 times in over a year.

Don't you ever bake a cake? Make a pie? Make lasagne? Roast a whole chicken? I use my oven several times a week, can't imagine how I'd cook without one! Today made chicken tartiflette in a large tray, not possible without an oven as far as I can see.

I roast a whole chicken in my air fryer last night. It was delicious. Succulent with perfect crispy skin. I've also made cakes in it.
