To Read the menu online

I am going for dinner with DH this evening somewhere we’ve not been before.

I’ve no allergies, am not a fussy eater (quite the opposite) but I like to have a nose at the menu before going.

Mainly because I’m a weirdo who likes reading a menu. DH had just said “reading the menu online “spoils the surprise”.

I think “well it’s an Italian restaurant- it won’t be that surprising”.

But wise women of MN… I open the door to you - so you read the menu online before going to a restaurant

I always do, not least to check if there are veggie dishes and possibly more than one. If the choice is crap and it’s not a group meal, I go elsewhere.

tupperwaretowers · 04/11/2023 14:13

I do this but it doesn’t make choosing what I want any quicker!

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/11/2023 14:13

I don't if I've already decided to go there. Unless the restaurant does takeaways, the online menu may not match what's available on the day, it'll be made up of the dishes they do which they feel are the best advertisement.

Sisterpita · 04/11/2023 14:13

I always try and check out the menu in advance.

YourNameGoesHere · 04/11/2023 14:14

Always unless it's somewhere I've been before. I'm neither fussy or have dietary requirements but I wouldn't want a surprise at a meal and like to know what I might order in advance so I can look forward to it.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 04/11/2023 14:14

I always do, in fact I read the menus of restaurants my friends are going to.
I love reading menus.

karmakameleon · 04/11/2023 14:14

I always check the menu. I also sometimes read online reviews to see if any particular dishes are recommended. I’d hate to choose poorly.

I’m exactly the same. I check the menu online of everywhere before I go as I’m veggie. I want to know if there is something I want to actually pay money for or if it’s just the ‘fuck you’ risotto again.

Manadou · 04/11/2023 14:15

I won't go to a restaurant without reading the menu online. How are you supposed to know if it has anything you like? Is DH being pissy about this, or is it just something he said in passing?

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 04/11/2023 14:15

I do this all the time 😳 I’m glad I’m not alone.

windypumpkin · 04/11/2023 14:15

I do, it let's me decide on a few options before I get there

Booklover23 · 04/11/2023 14:15

I do that too! Yesterday a friend posted from a restaurant on Facebook and I immediately went and looked at the menu

hmm maybe I am weird 🤣

I always do. I don’t have any allergies but there are a lot of things I’m not keen on so like to get an idea of what my choices are!

VeridicalVagabond · 04/11/2023 14:16

I always do, just out of curiosity really. I'm the opposite of a fussy eater, there's only about 3 things I absolutely can't eat, I'll give anything else a go. I just like goosing at all the options and wondering what I'll have.

Booklover23 · 04/11/2023 14:17

Not at all - he just got me thinking “am I alone in being menu obsessed”

I always look up the menu! I love to read menus.

Cheeesus · 04/11/2023 14:17

I would want to check it looks nice and the right sort of price before we book it.

DCINightingale · 04/11/2023 14:17

This is just normal isnt it? Nothing to get prissy about. I do this everytime. I rule out places that don't have a menu available online. I am vegan though so want to make sure I have an option.

I will also look up menus of places other people are going, to hypothetically pick out what I would have if I were going

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 04/11/2023 14:17

Always! In fact I can tell you what I’ll be having for tea on 30/12 because I’ve already chosen 😁

savoycabbage · 04/11/2023 14:18

I know what he means. Surprise probably isn't what he means. It spoils the part of the evening where you look at the menu and talk about what's on it. If you've already seen it you can't do that.

It's like watching a film with someone who has already seen it. It shouldn't matter as you have never seen it but you can't discuss or predict what you think is going to happen in the same way.

Foxontherun · 04/11/2023 14:18

Always do just to get an idea what to expect

and see if there's a cocktail list 😄

BronnauMawrion · 04/11/2023 14:19

I always look at the menu!
Hell, I'll look at menus of places I'll never intend to eat in. Pretend dining is my favourite pastime!

listsandbudgets · 04/11/2023 14:19

I do

a) to check I can afford it!
b) to try to ascertain whether it will cater to DP low carbing, DS gluten intolerant and DD pescatarian - it's a bit tricky Grin
c) I don't drink so I like to see if they've got any interesting mocktails, 0% lagers etc.

Yes!
I ask them to take photos of the food too.
