To Read the menu online

I am going for dinner with DH this evening somewhere we’ve not been before.

I’ve no allergies, am not a fussy eater (quite the opposite) but I like to have a nose at the menu before going.

Mainly because I’m a weirdo who likes reading a menu. DH had just said “reading the menu online “spoils the surprise”.

I think “well it’s an Italian restaurant- it won’t be that surprising”.

But wise women of MN… I open the door to you - so you read the menu online before going to a restaurant

Always. I still take ages looking at the menus when we get there though. I just love menus

Booklover23 · 04/11/2023 16:34

Am laughing at the Fuck You Risotto

I am not a veggie but was appalled recently when someone local asked about finding a veggie roast dinner where the main was not a nut roast

I live in an area heaving with restaurants and couldn’t find a single one where nut roast wasn’t the replacement for meat.

If I don’t look at a menu first it gets all ‘I’ve decided! I’m having the gnocchi!!’ for me.

I love food, love eating out. I love reading menus recreationally so much it’s probably actually enough of a hobby to feature on a CV, if that still was a thing.

Laughing a lot at the Fuck You risotto and all its cousins.

Payrisen · 04/11/2023 16:43

I always do too.

DH not so much - but I think this is because I do the majority of the cooking so nearly always know "whats for tea". So it is nice to have the pleasure of choosing rather than deciding (if that makes any kind of sense).

And I don't want to get there, be disappointed when I get given the menu (eg I fancied a steak...no steak on the menu). If I know the kind of menu it is before hand I won't be expecting something they cannot deliver.

DH...he frequently hasn't a clue at home what his evening meal is until it is dished up. So I think he is more used to living with surprises, or having something he may not really fancy - he is just grateful he is fed!

I always read the menu online first so that I’m not rushed when I get to the restaurant. I’m the type of person that can take ages to decide and can get overwhelmed with the options!! So I usually look and pick a couple of options just in case something is unavailable when I get there.

OfficerChurlish · 04/11/2023 16:51

I read the menu online too - it always seems to take me longer than it takes most people (or at least my usual dining companions) to choose what I want. It's not that I'm picky - I'm usually narrowing down options! Sometimes I'll go for something different when I get there, especially places that have specials, but even that is an easier decision if I'm comparing one or two things to the things I've already considered.

I'd go ahead and read the menu but don't tell your husband what's on it; that way you have the pleasure of planning/anticipation and he gets his surprise.

TroysMammy · 04/11/2023 16:52

I always do this as I get overwhelmed with choice.

My sister took the piss out of me in Subway because I was bombarded and bewildered with "do you want this, this and this?" when I only wanted a ham and cheese sub.

I'm not fussy but I like to leisurely choose beforehand and as some menus have some wanky ingredients and meals that don't appeal.

Hadjab · 04/11/2023 16:53

I do, because I like to salivate in advance.

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/11/2023 16:57

Oh I definitely do.

I need to know theres something I'll eat.

I may need to rearrange anything else I'll eat (medical conditions).

I like to have a good nosey and look forward to what I might have!

I ALWAYS read the menu (and choose) beforehand.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/11/2023 16:59

I do usually
But disappointed if I'm looking forward to a particular dish and they've run out.

TimeForACider · 04/11/2023 17:01

I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t 😆 I always do it if it’s somewhere new. I’m not fussy as all but some restaurants have very limited menus and if there’s genuinely nothing DH or I fancy, we choose somewhere else.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/11/2023 17:01

Mushroom (or other filling) Wellington is another old faithful. I quite like it if it's done well. I had a leek, mushroom & walnut bake local to me recently (Bristol)

For food porn heaven try looking at the 5 star buffets in Las Vegas on Youtube 😋

Jelllytot · 04/11/2023 17:02

YANBU at all. I love all things food, and part of the excitement of going to a restaurant for me includes looking at the menu beforehand and getting excited about what I'd like.. I know I'm not the only one either. At my last workplace if we were going out as a group we would definitely have a peek at the menu beforehand.

Also sometimes the way I pick a new restaurant to go to is by having a look at their menu and deciding if it's worth going to.

LoobyDop · 04/11/2023 17:04

It’s part of the fun of eating out, imo.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 04/11/2023 17:05

I love reading menus and always look when visiting a new place.

We also play a What Would I Order game this time of year...

When in a restaurant, get their Christmas menu and mentally choose your ideal menu (starter, main and dessert). Then get your dining partners to guess your choices. Literally minutes of fun! 😃

Essenceofpetunia · 04/11/2023 17:08

I often do but then wish I hadn’t, as it spoils the surprise. This is especially true if it’s somewhere a bit special. I don’t have allergies and am really unfussy so I don’t need to check.

Already done it many times, also fancy Cruise line buffets!

LoobyDop · 04/11/2023 17:14

Of course the downside of checking in advance is when you see something you spend all day looking forward to and then you get there and they haven’t got it.

BogHag · 04/11/2023 17:14

YANBU, it’s part of the fun and builds anticipation!

Enko · 04/11/2023 17:20

I do this all the time its half the pleasure of the anticipation.

My friends birthday yesterday and she sent me the menu to where she as going with friends. She is in America and I was drooling over the menu. It is fun

JADS · 04/11/2023 17:22

I like to have a good nosey, but wouldn't do it every time. I do like to have in my mind whether it's a starter/main or main/dessert place.

If it's somewhere with the children, I 100% check. The older one is a bit fussy and a plan is good.

LittleGreenDuck · 04/11/2023 17:26

Always check the menu. I can't cope with the pressure of having to decide quickly!
