Odd accent and attitude

I'm going to sound like a snob here. Enormously long Argos van showed up on the road this morning when there were cars everywhere. As well as the driver there was a young lad who looked about 15 though must have been older who got out to check the street as I was going out. "Alright love?" he shouted over to me.

He had the grey tracksuit tucked into socks and trainers look and a fade haircut with a plastered down fringe, and the accent was bizarre. A mix between the big fat gypsy wedding and "gangsta". Definitely not local (north Derbyshire) and nobody else I know speaks like that so where does it come from? What they watch on TV? How do accents evolve?

At 18 or so I'd never have thought about calling over to men in their 30s in the street. I had some attitude but not this. Hey at least he didn't say cheer up love I guess.

Cheer up love!

Isn't it wonderful that people like this are willing to do such jobs so that we can have things delivered?

topshotta · 04/11/2023 09:54

Well atleast he's out working rather than you sat on your arse nosing at people doing their job

Check out Henry Higgins over here, getting an entire accent from two shouted words

Catscatscatscatscatscats · 04/11/2023 09:56

Sorry...but what is the point of this?

Seeline · 04/11/2023 09:56

If he didn't sound local I'm guessing he came from somewhere else.

Good on him for having a job at such a young age.

As for your post - you're the one with the odd attitude

PickyCat · 04/11/2023 09:57

So if I've read correctly, you're bothered by what you describe as a cheerful young man going about his paid employment...on account of the fact you disliked his accent and/or style of dress? Not sure what to say or even what responses you might be looking for here.

Stroopwaffels · 04/11/2023 09:58

Definitely not local

People move. 🙄Are you so parochial usually?

ilovesooty · 04/11/2023 09:58

Going to sound like a snob here

Yes.

TheShellBeach · 04/11/2023 09:58

Did you mean to sound so snobbish?

PurBal · 04/11/2023 09:58

How do accents evolve?
Interesting question. The rest of the post is odd.

LickChit · 04/11/2023 09:58

What are you asking? Are you genuinely interested in how accents evolve? Bizarre thread.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 04/11/2023 10:00

Didn’t realise Argos was a local shop for local people. You must know people don’t have to stay living in the street they grew up on and that its quite possible the man grew up elsewhere in the country but is now living and working in your area with his gasp non-local accent.

bigageap · 04/11/2023 10:01

Ah was it because it was Argos and not John Lewis?? Would he be a higher class of delivery driver???!!!! 🤦‍♀️

Dotcheck · 04/11/2023 10:02

Is it possible ( since they were in a large van) that they drove from a place where their accent is usual. Or that they (shudder) moved to the area?
Doesn’t bear thinking about, but I think that can happen.

IHeartGeneHunt · 04/11/2023 10:03

He probably said "Alright love" because he'd noticed you staring at him and he was trying to be polite/wondering what the hell you were staring at him for.

LadyCuntington · 04/11/2023 10:04

Personally I would have asked this person to leave my property. Imagine if someone heard him and thought I might associate with him!

Dustpantsandbush · 04/11/2023 10:04

Justleaveitblankthen · 04/11/2023 10:04

You lost me at 'Enormously long Argos Van'
So a lorry? 😂

KateMiddletonsExtensions · 04/11/2023 10:05

Ha ha the replies are as weird as you thought the OP was! Only on aibu.

@topshotta how can you sit on your arse and walk down the street at the same time? !!

It's only right that Amazon tat mass produced in Chinese sweatshops be delivered by (checks notes) local people ?

flyinginsect · 04/11/2023 10:08

Different part of the country and some young men (mostly teen boys) speak with a weird generic gangsta accent now. It's 100% from the internet.

Or she’s being an absolute drama Queen about a long wheel base sprinter (or the like)
This, I can’t help but feel, is one of the most pointless threads I’ve read. Van is used to make delivery to a residential area, man says hello in a ‘different’ accent, wears clothes OP doesn’t like.
