Odd accent and attitude

I'm going to sound like a snob here. Enormously long Argos van showed up on the road this morning when there were cars everywhere. As well as the driver there was a young lad who looked about 15 though must have been older who got out to check the street as I was going out. "Alright love?" he shouted over to me.

He had the grey tracksuit tucked into socks and trainers look and a fade haircut with a plastered down fringe, and the accent was bizarre. A mix between the big fat gypsy wedding and "gangsta". Definitely not local (north Derbyshire) and nobody else I know speaks like that so where does it come from? What they watch on TV? How do accents evolve?

At 18 or so I'd never have thought about calling over to men in their 30s in the street. I had some attitude but not this. Hey at least he didn't say cheer up love I guess.

This thread is hilarious and bizarre at the same time. What’s a roadman?

Same as a wasteman 😂 prison style grey tracksuit, puffer coat, beanie(or not) trainers, white socks.

Is this a thinly veiled hint that he might have been

<brace yourself>

A Traveller?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 04/11/2023 12:09

OP you gave yourself away with the incorrect use of the word "the" describing his clothing.

I honestly believe some people think being called a snob is a compliment and gives them a class status.

RubyBoozeDay · 04/11/2023 12:10

Ugh what a revoltingly snobby post. Your sneering description of his haircut, his clothes and his accent are so patronising.

Isn't traveller "in" at the moment I keep seeing boys with mullets and i think that's more of a traveller hairstyle 🤔

BeenRoundThatBlock · 04/11/2023 12:12

Socks in the shoes
Had the OP watching his moves
He parked his van

Had OP judging low low low low low

(With apologies to Flo Rida)
Also, Biscuit

Jewelspun · 04/11/2023 12:14

How frightful for you op.

Thankfully I live in an area where it's befitting for Argos employees to make an effort in their appearance.

I hope you've written to Argos head office about your appalling encounter. Make sure you send a copy to your MP and write in to your local newspaper.

Well you've not given yourself away as I haven't a clue what you're on about.

"Duck" is certainly a thing in Worksop and Sheffield!

I left NE Derbyshire aged 18,in 1976. I STILL call people "duck". Including complete strangers in shops, etc.

This is the internet though, where people can create their own persona.

I suspect in real life, the OP is sat in a dirty dressing gown, puffing on a fag, pausing only to scream at her children.

Sad really.

@KateMiddletonsExtensions you'd hate my accent. Mums Irish, dads a Mancunian, I grew up in Yorkshire and live in Derbyshire.
I have a proper mash up 😂

supersonicginandtonic · 04/11/2023 12:24

Oh and I tucked my leggings in my socks this morning when I walked the dogs 😂

Roadman

Yes!
Nah fam bruh - it’s a bizarre and totally adopted accent.

Mytholmroyd · 04/11/2023 12:29

Calling everyone 'love' is perfectly normal in West Yorkshire - not so far away

Luxell934 · 04/11/2023 12:30

Quite sad you felt the need to post about this non event on mumsnet. Enjoy your lunch.

Testina · 04/11/2023 12:34

KateMiddletonsExtensions · 04/11/2023 11:21

You're missing the point @ChickHenLittle I asked "where does it come from? What they watch on TV? How do accents evolve?"

It wasn't a regional or overseas accent. It was like a mashup of different ones.

That’s exactly it. It’s not snobbery about a certain regional accent or dialect. It isn’t one of those! It’s just people adopting roadman-speak. It’s as bizarre to encounter as that idiot DJ Tim whatever his name was (Westwood) and his totally affected (Jamaican?) / London cross gangsta accent.

supersonicginandtonic · 04/11/2023 12:48

@Iwantmyoldnameback I've got 5 very traveller of me 😂
