Just fucking sick of dogs

1000 replies

crazyaginglady · 03/11/2023 19:00

Sorry but I am. I was cycling home from
picking up DS from school with him on the back and a dog came running up beside
me snarling and snapping at my feet on the pedals. I nearly bloody went over but managed to keep my balance and get past it (electric bike). Owner called an apology and I just rode on as it was still off the lead and I was worried for DS.

This is a national cycling path and much used school route so there are always bikes and children 8-9 and 3-4.

A sausage dog decided to bolt towards my 2 year old last month in the park for no apparent reason and I had to scoop him
up to avoid contact.

And don’t get me started in the ‘oh he’s just being friendly’. I don’t want your fucking dog jumping on me or my children or scaring my kids when we are just going about our day.

They should ALL be on leads unless they are in a dog park/field.

There are a lot around but I very very rarely have an issue with them, doesn't matter if I'm running, walking or biking. They don't approach me, the owner pulls them in to let me past, all is well. I don't see much poo about either, there will always be the odd one but I'm definitely not dodging it all of the time.

I don't live in a posh area either, I live in one of the nicer bits of town but it's slap bang in the middle of the Midlands and not known for being nice at all.

I also don't own a dog, never have. I only have cats and rats so no skin in the game at all.

Me neither....once was sat eating my lunch on a park bench though, and friendly dog came to say hello - no problem, but I had my plastic box of food on my knee and the dog just open its jaws and took a large bite Confused
I was so surprised I just sat and watched 'agogged'
The owner seemed pretty surprised too, especially when it tried for a second bite
I gave up after that
I wasn't scared though and it was quite funny.

It's the shops and cafes and restaurants that bother me. I don't want animals in places were food is served it's disgusting.

FFS it’s not like their in the kitchen whipping up your noodles, get a grip

travelnorth · 04/11/2023 04:50

I am sorry but irresponsible cyclists on the roads are much of a bigger problem for me. I agree that dogs should be kept on leads as much as possible. However, I have never experienced or seen any issues with dogs around. When I had mine toddlers parents and kids were always asking to pet my dog which was sweet.

Mercurial123 · 04/11/2023 05:12

YABVU, it's the dog owners you should be annoyed with. The same for unruly children it's the parents. There should be a separate section for the cat and dog haters.

Bingsbongs · 04/11/2023 05:22

i agree all dogs should be in the public on the leads

we have gone to the park and one fool had his 2 dogs off the leash who ate my childrens breads that they were feeding ducks with and scared the ducks away, the owner just stands there and says sorry i have to wait till shes finished eating.. and when she finishes eating she chased around my autistic child whos scared of dogs,i also had a baby and a toddler with me and dog was making my autistic daughter run away other direction chasing her

then the dogs that come up jump, bark, sniff around bottom area, lick etc- its so bizarre that its expected that a stranger has to tolerate their space being invaded

mfbx5sf3 · 04/11/2023 06:09

@Neriah yes there’s often reports of feral toddlers murdering random dogs. Definitely warrants the same level of concern.

Finbad · 04/11/2023 06:33

I agree OP
Dog shit everywhere, dogs on seats in restaurants/pubs, no re call from owners. Professional dog walkers with 8-10 dogs dogs with no control over the pack taking over the parks.

Bobsleigh334 · 04/11/2023 06:37

To be fair you shouldn’t have been feeding bread to ducks.

kitsuneghost · 03/11/2023 20:17

Do you want to walk around with shit in your pocket
I know I don't.

Well that's something you need to consider when you chose to buy your dog.

Why the hostility, you don't know what I saw.

In a cafe with food on a self serve counter, owner let's its precious dog stand up on its hind legs and have a good sniff / lick of the food.

I walked back out.

Now get a grip and control your dog in public. It's obvious the owner you are.

Dogs are revolting creatures.

@PlipPlopChoo preach 😂

This thread is so cathartic. Saying you don’t like dogs in this country is like saying you’re a psychopathic serial killer.

And I’m not saying dogs should be in leads because I don’t like them I’m saying they should be on a lead because they’re often antisocial - whether that be nature or nurture.

You're not wrong, I mentioned I wasn't particularly fond of dogs the other day and my friend said "that surprises me because I actually like you".

I'm not anti dog, but since having children I have become more wary of them.

TheaBrandt · 04/11/2023 08:20

I’m indifferent to dogs don’t particularly like or dislike them as long as they don’t bother me. It’s just now there are far too many of them it’s unsustainable. In our wider friendship group anecdotally the majority have dogs. When I grew up in the country only a few families did.

D3LAN3Y · 04/11/2023 08:25

All the inconsiderate people on here definitely don't give a fuck about us with allergies to their precious fur babies 🙄

If they are dog friendly, there is a good chance I'm going to start swelling up if your dog is slobbering all over the cafe or licking everything....

The worst thing is I don't mind dogs. When I go to move away from them, owners shout at me "he just wants to be your friend", when I say "I'm allergic"...I get funny looks. Why son has started getting swelling/puffy eyes and lips around my dad's dog, so it looks like he's following in my footsteps.

User0000009 · 04/11/2023 08:34

Oh I when I’ve moved away from a dog or just stood still I’ve had owners say “so sorry, sorry he’s in the park”. Piss off with them

GreenwichOrTwicks · 04/11/2023 08:36

Completely agree with you OP.
Where I live they are everywhere.
I was bitten by a dachund recently in a pub.
I was feeding the baby in the park peacefully when a huge dog came bouncing up to my toddler and knocked him over. do I was trying to hold the baby, grab the toddler and kick the dog away.
Owner uselessly distance away.
Traumatic.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/11/2023 08:45

I do wonder about all these people saying that dogs are continually running up to them/jumping up at them/sniffing around them.

Almost every day I walk in a big park where there are always people walking their dogs, and except for a couple of months when the deer are producing their babies, many of the dogs will be off the lead. And I’ve hardly ever had any dog run up to me or jump up - and I’m a dog lover who’s had two in the past and would be happy to meet them.

The dogs are mostly far too busy running around, looking for or following enticing smells.

Milliemoos5 · 04/11/2023 08:47

The last things dogs are is revolting! Would you say the search and rescue dogs sent to Turkey after the catastrophic earthquake and found countless People buried under the rubble were revolting? The sniffer dogs at the airport who find drug smuggling? Cadaver dogs? Guide dogs? Mountain rescue dogs? Sheep dogs who help farmers? Police dogs? Therapy dogs? Bomb detection dogs?

i agree some owners are useless but I think people would agree generally how remarkable dogs are!

XelaM · 04/11/2023 08:49

People who hate dogs and teach their kids to be fearful are usually highly strung unpleasant people. No wonder so many kids suffer with anxiety and so many mental health issues with crazy parents like that.

I come across countless dogs every day, yet somehow manage to never encounter any of the millions of issues Mumsnetters seem to face on a daily basis. 🤷‍♀️

There seems to be some sort of mania around owning a dog at the moment. Not everyone is capable of owning a dog but still they have them. Dogs are not humans. Just because they are treated as such by the owner doesn’t mean the rest of us want them to have the same privileges as us. They should not be in cafes, pubs etc. Take them up the park on a lead. We are not all lovers of dogs

A lot of people I know have no idea about owning or training a dog. An ex colleague this year showed me photos of her dachshund’s birthday party complete with hat and streamers and in the same breath told me she wasn’t trained well but was hard to train.

I do see people in my local park with a dog that seems more like a companion than a pet.

Exactly!

Dogs are the most incredible creatures - loyal, intelligent, loving and just wonderful. I am amazed every day by my lovely dog. 🥰

Dogs might have their uses as you’ve listed, but someone’s pet dog is just a nuisance when it’s in people’s way.

gotomomo · 04/11/2023 08:58

It's not dogs that are the problem, it's owners who haven't bothered training them. My ddog does neither because he's trained, he gold his gold certificate, he walks to heel off lead, perfect recall and avoids other people, my issue is random people letting their toddlers chase him of offering him food when he's been trained to not accept food outside, they then get offended when he won't eat it!

Training is the issue, bring back dog licences and you can apply for an offlead one once you pass the recall and not chasing bikes test!

funinthesun19 · 04/11/2023 08:58

Quoted the wrong person. Ah well.

cocksstrideintheevening · 04/11/2023 08:59

Where are all these dogs that run up and jump at people, literally never had it happen.
