Hi,
Not even sure why I’m posting, just in case someone can help.
I have my NHS dentist (been with him for almost 10 years) who is absolutely brilliant and never had any issues with my teeth other than the odd filling, but no issues with the layout or structure of them. However I was also at a private dentist during the in between lockdowns when dentists could open but the NHS check up backlog was so long, so I went to a private dentist to get a check up. He was fab too, however he pointed out so many issues with my teeth and gave me a quotation of around 5k (bleaching, composite bonds and some kind of brace too), ever since then I’ve absolutely hated my teeth. He pointed out that I have a huge overbite or overjet (can’t remember exactly which one) and something to do with the layout of my bottom jaw being too far back and I could get surgery if I wanted to fix it. I said I’d never noticed it and he said if I take some side profile pictures I’ll see it. So I did, and ever since then, I’ve hated my face. My bottom jaw is so far behind my top jaw it looks awful. And when I smile it looks like my teeth are projecting forwards and sticking out. He said it’s a combination of 25 years worth of nail biting and just the layout of my jaw.

I had train tracks as a teen for the straightness and I’m fine with the straightness of my teeth now, but now I absolutely despise my face because of how ridiculous it looks having my jaw that far back and my teeth sticking out, it looks like I’ve got buck teeth. I don’t want to get surgery on my jaw either but ever since he said that I’ve never got it out of my head. Looking at my side profile, does it look so far from normal? Is it completely obvious that my bottom jaw is really far back and my top teeth stick out? When I went back to my NHS dentist and told him he was appalled and said it’s slightly lower back but not awfully so and he would never have flagged it as a problem, and obviously I trust him, but it’s so hard to stop feeling self conscious about it now

Lovely teeth. Mine are an embarrassment to others apparently, as they're chipped crooked and I've a tiny jaw so very overcrowded - am not allowed to smile in the kids graduation photos for example.

twigy100 · 02/11/2023 16:48

Op your teeth are beautiful.

I have had the operation for an over bite and it was horrible. I'm lucky in the sense it was done when I was 18 and still living with parents but the recovery is a very long process. My jaw was wired shut and meals were through a straw, I still hate soup now.

I wish I had your teeth! He is after your money.

This 💯

TeabagsGalore · 02/11/2023 16:49

You have a really beautiful smile. I'm afraid the private dentist probably wants to update his/her Range Rover to a Rolls Royce.........Don't let this make you feel insecure, you're gorgeous.

ArcaneWireless · 02/11/2023 16:49

You have beautiful teeth.

I too fretted over covid but paid to go to the hygienist instead. (Not the best teeth/implants etc due to ex h) and they were fabulous. I still go now in between my NHS appointments.

I’m glad you aren’t going to faff about with your teeth OP. You look just fine as you are.

FictionalCharacter · 02/11/2023 16:49

You look perfectly normal and your teeth look great.
You went to him for a dental health checkup, not a consultation for cosmetic work. If you didn’t mention wanting cosmetic work to him he shouldn’t have suggested it. He was out of order IMO.

Amara123 · 02/11/2023 16:50

I think cosmetic surgery and dentistry often erase the imperfections that make someone unique and attractive. Think of Heidi Montag or the Kardashians, bland bland bland. You look great.
I think this dentist should be reported to the General Dental Council. Unethical overselling of procedures that have risks.

Maia77 · 02/11/2023 16:50

Your teeth are amazing. Overbite is tiny, barely visible. Don't spend any more time thinking about this.

Mikimoto · 02/11/2023 16:50

Your teeth are gorgeous.
Your jaw position is classic nail-biter's or smoker's.

Happinessislikeabutterfly · 02/11/2023 16:50

Honestly your teeth are lovely so white/straight too. Please don’t give what the dentist said a second thought. Of course a dentist is entitled to his opinion but imo is over critical and I wouldn’t touch your teeth at all. The over bite is really a non issue in my opinion it’s hardly much of one at all. Many people would love your teeth 😊.

Who is telling you not to smile - your kids? How dare they.

Rikitiki78 · 02/11/2023 16:52

What? I think your jaw is fine. Your beautiful. Don’t let that dentist your self image.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 02/11/2023 16:52

Wish my teeth were that good. Too many dentists (unfortunately) are no longer about good dental health but about cosmetic dentistry and making money from treatments that often weaken the teeth and cause issues further down the line. I can remember DH being told he suddenly needed lots of work after having regular check ups and me sending him off to another dentist for a second opinion, which quickly made it clear that his teeth were fine and they certainly did not need the work suggested!!

IClaudine · 02/11/2023 16:52

Your teeth are lovely, OP. Your smile is lovely. The dentist is clearly a money grabber and really unprofessional.

OhhBiscuits · 02/11/2023 16:53

What??? You have gorgeous teeth, a gorgeous smile and a gorgeous profile. Ignore ignore ignore!

iatealltheminieggs · 02/11/2023 15:49

I'd say it was in a private dentist's best interests to suggest you need a load of expensive work done. It doesn't mean you need it!

I'll second this.

They won't get their hands on your money if they dont try ther best to make you feel that there's something that "needs" to be rectified.

simonthedog · 02/11/2023 16:55

I am a dentist. You look lovely. He was just trying to sell you work.

misunderstoodMilo · 02/11/2023 16:55

There are scammers and chancers in every industry that try to charge you for extra or unnecessary work and unfortunately you met one. I know easier said than done but try to put this private dentists words out of your head, he is a twat. You have a lovely smile and smashing white teeth.

babybunny123 · 02/11/2023 16:55

there is absolutely nothing wrong with your teeth or jaw, they are perfect

Topseyt123 · 02/11/2023 16:56

Your teeth look fine. Take no notice of this not so fab and money grabbing private dentist.

A £5k quote for work that you definitely don't need is utterly outrageous and shouldn't be allowed.

AnneValentine · 02/11/2023 16:56

He’s an absolute scam artist.

shakeitoffsis · 02/11/2023 16:57

I'm an orthodontic nurse. Firstly your teeth look lovely on that smiling photo! The profile pic, I can see you are talking about, what we call class II, but I think you really mask it when you smile and you look great! You probably now bring your lower jaw forward to mask and compensate for the bite which his has drawn attention to. Honestly if you're happy forget what he's said! I work with a world renowned consultant orthodontist and he is class III himself where his lower jaw protrudes in front of his upper jaw and it doesn't bother him
One bit even though he fixes patients with the same bite as him every day.

Brodpit · 02/11/2023 16:57

Your teeth and smile are gorgeous!

We had similar when I took DS (then 14) to an orthodontist after being referred by our NHS dentist. All very shiny and glossy and fish in a tank and very made up dental assistants all in white and there were many photos taken and discussions about the colour of the brace bands (so exciting!) and then ‘oh, you can see how they are not straight here and here..’ and concerned looks. Funnily enough not bad enough to qualify for NHS treatment so that will be £5k plus for them to ‘change his life’.

I said not a chance and now DS is self-conscious about his crap smile.

Absolutely loathsome hard sell.

Epidote · 02/11/2023 16:57

Your teeth are great. It is your bottom jaw causing the overbite. Nothing to do with the denture itself, I think. That need surgery if you want to get rid of it. I wouldn't if I were you, you look very pretty on the photos

HoldOnMiGenna · 02/11/2023 16:58

Your teeth and smile are lovely.
You don't need anything doing from a cosmetic point of view.
As a previous poster said, just continue regular check ups and if in any pain, get to the root of it ( pardon the pun).
