Hi,
Not even sure why I’m posting, just in case someone can help.
I have my NHS dentist (been with him for almost 10 years) who is absolutely brilliant and never had any issues with my teeth other than the odd filling, but no issues with the layout or structure of them. However I was also at a private dentist during the in between lockdowns when dentists could open but the NHS check up backlog was so long, so I went to a private dentist to get a check up. He was fab too, however he pointed out so many issues with my teeth and gave me a quotation of around 5k (bleaching, composite bonds and some kind of brace too), ever since then I’ve absolutely hated my teeth. He pointed out that I have a huge overbite or overjet (can’t remember exactly which one) and something to do with the layout of my bottom jaw being too far back and I could get surgery if I wanted to fix it. I said I’d never noticed it and he said if I take some side profile pictures I’ll see it. So I did, and ever since then, I’ve hated my face. My bottom jaw is so far behind my top jaw it looks awful. And when I smile it looks like my teeth are projecting forwards and sticking out. He said it’s a combination of 25 years worth of nail biting and just the layout of my jaw.

I had train tracks as a teen for the straightness and I’m fine with the straightness of my teeth now, but now I absolutely despise my face because of how ridiculous it looks having my jaw that far back and my teeth sticking out, it looks like I’ve got buck teeth. I don’t want to get surgery on my jaw either but ever since he said that I’ve never got it out of my head. Looking at my side profile, does it look so far from normal? Is it completely obvious that my bottom jaw is really far back and my top teeth stick out? When I went back to my NHS dentist and told him he was appalled and said it’s slightly lower back but not awfully so and he would never have flagged it as a problem, and obviously I trust him, but it’s so hard to stop feeling self conscious about it now

OP - your teeth are absolutely gorgeous, wish I had teeth like yours. I bet you have a lovely smile. I definitely don’t think any other work is warranted.

chimichangaz · 02/11/2023 16:20

I would kill for your teeth (and lips!) - honestly.

They are gorgeous and you need to do absolutely NOTHING but look after them as a PP said.

Houseagh · 02/11/2023 16:21

Out to get your money. Tell him to get lost. You’ve genuinely got LOVELY teeth as far as teeth go and I would never look at you and think anything is even slightly bad.

Spinet · 02/11/2023 16:21

Your teeth are lovely and you look like Anne Hathaway. Well the bottom half of your face does anyway.

This makes me so angry because it's like 'The Beauty Myth' (Naomi Wolf) in action. Marketers and people who make money out of your appearance have no interest in you feeling happy with yourself so of course they are going to point out your (made up) flaws - they want you to pay them to fix them! Tell the patriarchy to fuck itself by not believing a word of it! You are beautiful inside and out!

JaxiiTaxii · 02/11/2023 16:21

I consider myself a bit of a tooth conneoisiur - it's the first thing I notice about people, and OP, yours are lovely. I'd assume you'd had them whitened if not straightened. Beautiful smile.

Off topic, but I personally dislike the one big white mono-tooth look. Give me nice clean, natural teeth with a bit of a gap or slight fangs & I'm really very happy.

StaunchMomma · 02/11/2023 16:21

Private dentists are the teeth equivalent of hairdressers who tell women their hair would look best short and coloured - THEY ARE TRYING TO GET MORE MONEY OUT OF YOU!!

FireworkFloozy · 02/11/2023 16:21

Oh, op, the grabbing sod is spinning you a line!!!

I fell up the kitchen step and smashed my face into the concrete floor and it has pushed my bottom jaw back and slightly out of line - bled all over the place for hours as I bit through a vein and now I can’t bite cotton anymore😛 my lovely private dentist says I was lucky enough not to kill myself and, yes it’s pushed my jaw back a bit, but nobody notices it, and people say my teeth are lovely for my age (60) he has filed some down very gently so they sit together better but he would never ever suggest all the crap that your dentist is suggesting!

Hooray for the dentist posting above with her red wine etc🍷 the voice of common sense and natural teeth!!
You have got lovely teeth, and I see no problems at all. Keep smiling 😁

sealbark · 02/11/2023 16:21

I wish I had your teeth, they're lovely.

ilovesushi · 02/11/2023 16:21

What!!!!!???? You look amazing. You look like a model! You are stunning and your teeth look amazing! That charlatan was just wanting to make money from you. Never ever go back there again. Trust what your NHS dentist is saying who clearly has your dental health at heart and is not out to make a fortune off you and destroy your mental health in the process. x

TedMullins · 02/11/2023 16:01

A private dentist did this to me once as well. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with your teeth or jaw, you look perfectly normal and have lovely teeth. They’re just trying to make as much money as possible!

Absolutely.
I’ve been seeing a private dentist for some treatment, I wish I’d just waited the 9 months for my nhs appointment.

You look perfectly normal and the dentist has given you insecurities. So awful of them. You teeth are lovely and your profile is perfectly lovely too. They just want your money, ignore them Flowers

pizzaHeart · 02/11/2023 16:23

iatealltheminieggs · 02/11/2023 15:49

I'd say it was in a private dentist's best interests to suggest you need a load of expensive work done. It doesn't mean you need it!

This^
however from the other side NHS only flags up very essential work so the truth is somewhere in between.

A3635454 · 02/11/2023 16:24

I was very lucky to have braces on the NHS as an adult, at a dental hospital, and they wanted to do jaw surgery for the same reason. They even printed out photos of how my face looked, and how my face could look! With the surgery I would have looked better from the side but it would have totally changed my face from the front, and I didn’t want that. My jawline is quite soft, and it would have looked more square and severe. I also knew someone irl who had had it done, and they almost looked like a different person afterwards, which I didn’t want personally, having young DC. I refused the surgery and have no regrets. Though I can understand why you feel the way you do - I could easily have developed a complex with the way they went about it!

IWasFunBeforeMum · 02/11/2023 16:24

I'd kill for teeth like yours.

EC22 · 02/11/2023 16:25

He wants your money.
You have nice teeth and a pretty smile. You certainly don’t need 5k of work done.
Dont go back.

bluejelly · 02/11/2023 16:25

You have lovely teeth and jawline, honestly!! Don't give that dentist's pitch (and it was a pitch for work) a second's more thought.

LickChit · 02/11/2023 16:26

Private dentists are always on the rinse. Your teeth are lovely. Ignore!

Bonbon21 · 02/11/2023 16:26

How do you think private dentists reel in their patients?
Pick you apart and promise to rebuild!
I had this happen to me... twat gave me an estimate of 5k... I laughed and handed it back to his receptionist.. I still attend that practice.. but only get to see the hygienist unless I insist... that costs £60 a time now!!
You have beautiful teeth... dont even think about any of the things he has highlighted... you are just building his pension for him..

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 16:27

You're actually supposed to have a slight overbite. Mine was fixed TO the position yours is in!

Bluetune · 02/11/2023 16:28

Wow I am so jealous of your teeth!!! I wouldn’t think you had an overbite, he is definitely trying to rinse you.

Pooooochi · 02/11/2023 16:29

He's a private dentist. He's only making money if he can sell you a load of cosmetic work on your teeth.

Ignore. Dentistry has gone down the pan in this country.

Investinavest · 02/11/2023 16:29

Blimey my DH has proper buck teeth, trust me! And I have a terrible crossbite that all dentists delight in.

The dentist was selling you a solution that you don't need and don't want, so just disregard it. Your face looks utterly normal and you have lovely teeth, wish mine were that white.

Oblomov23 · 02/11/2023 16:29

Eh? You have lovely teeth!

TenThousandSpoons · 02/11/2023 16:29

Oh my goodness, your teeth are GORGEOUS! I would never see that new dentist again! Honestly they are beautiful teeth.

18daychallenge · 02/11/2023 16:29

I say this as a hospital dentist - you're teeth are completely lovely and you do not need anything doing to them! Yes, you have a Class 2 Skeletal pattern (overbite) but 30% of people also do - it certainly wouldn't warrant surgery and would not be considered on the NHS!

Most private dentists are considered 'aesthetic dentists' so they will try and suggest 'aesthetic improvements' as that's their job. I wouldn't take it personally, it's like going to a plastic surgeon, they are going to see suggest 'improvements'.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 16:30

But PPs claiming "all private dentists are scammers" or similar are also wrong.
Most private dentists have your best interests at heart. I've had private dentists pretty much all my adult life and the only dentist who ever lied to me was an NHS one who recommended 4 unnecessary fillings when I was 18.
