Hi,
Not even sure why I’m posting, just in case someone can help.
I have my NHS dentist (been with him for almost 10 years) who is absolutely brilliant and never had any issues with my teeth other than the odd filling, but no issues with the layout or structure of them. However I was also at a private dentist during the in between lockdowns when dentists could open but the NHS check up backlog was so long, so I went to a private dentist to get a check up. He was fab too, however he pointed out so many issues with my teeth and gave me a quotation of around 5k (bleaching, composite bonds and some kind of brace too), ever since then I’ve absolutely hated my teeth. He pointed out that I have a huge overbite or overjet (can’t remember exactly which one) and something to do with the layout of my bottom jaw being too far back and I could get surgery if I wanted to fix it. I said I’d never noticed it and he said if I take some side profile pictures I’ll see it. So I did, and ever since then, I’ve hated my face. My bottom jaw is so far behind my top jaw it looks awful. And when I smile it looks like my teeth are projecting forwards and sticking out. He said it’s a combination of 25 years worth of nail biting and just the layout of my jaw.

I had train tracks as a teen for the straightness and I’m fine with the straightness of my teeth now, but now I absolutely despise my face because of how ridiculous it looks having my jaw that far back and my teeth sticking out, it looks like I’ve got buck teeth. I don’t want to get surgery on my jaw either but ever since he said that I’ve never got it out of my head. Looking at my side profile, does it look so far from normal? Is it completely obvious that my bottom jaw is really far back and my top teeth stick out? When I went back to my NHS dentist and told him he was appalled and said it’s slightly lower back but not awfully so and he would never have flagged it as a problem, and obviously I trust him, but it’s so hard to stop feeling self conscious about it now

All human beings have an overbite ffs.

BeeHappy12 · 02/11/2023 18:56

Gorgeous teeth and the overbite is not at all noticeable

All human beings have an overbite ffs.

Well yes, and all an overjet, and all root canals and even all a TMJ.

That’s not how it’s generally referred to though because dentists try to explain things in the way patients might understand.

Overbite is misused on this site 99.9% of the time but there’s no point being a pedant if it reduces understanding.

Poppy61 · 02/11/2023 18:57

You have beautiful teeth. You should see my overbite!

AllrightNowBaby · 02/11/2023 18:59

What on earth is he talking about.
Nothing wrong with your jaw or your teeth.
Stupid man!!! 😡

ditalini · 02/11/2023 19:06

I think a slight overbite like yours looks really pretty.

Your smile looks like Taylor Swift.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 02/11/2023 19:18

Please please take what the private dentist said with a bucket of salt - it is in their interests to make you feel bad about how you look, then they can sell you expensive treatments. I wouldnt be surprised if he started talking about botox and fillers too if you engage with him.

Kiopa · 02/11/2023 19:22

You have great teeth. I dont think its normal to have teeth that perfectly align up and down when you're resting! When i try and do that with my face it gives me a really big chin!

MrShady · 02/11/2023 19:35

Private aren't all the same
Mine has never tried to sell me anything. I have denplan with them. Was upset over my teeth not being white enough and he said the very white ones you see are veneers and he's not doing that to my teeth

Florabeebaby · 02/11/2023 19:38

You have gorgeous teeth!! And smile!!

Silverdogblue · 02/11/2023 19:40

Just to clarify the terms and the “normal” measurements.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with your beautiful white straight teeth which I'd love to have myself. The cheek of that fecker trying to find problems he'd happily charge you a bomb to fix. Ignore and find yourself another dentist.

HalfMumHalfBiccit · 02/11/2023 19:58

Omg your teeth are lovely. Ignore them. Keep looking after them and going to check ups.

Grapewrath · 02/11/2023 20:01

Your teeth are absolutely gorgeous
I have a severe overheat and if I posted it on here you would see the massive difference. Tbh I don’t like it and it does knock my confidence but I have seen people have corrections and end up with a really long face and/or looking completely different. Please don’t touch your teeth!!

Denplan is an insurance scheme developed for dentists by dentists. Basically it encourages supervised neglect. I hate seeing new patients who have been on Denplan for years they usually have a shed load of treatment needed and have been paying out a lot of money for very little return.
You get what you pay for, fee per item is always going to provide the best service.
Denplan covers everything apart from lab bills. You pay the dentist several hundred pounds a year. The fee is the same if you have treatment or not. There is zero incentive to treat anything but what is absolutely necessary ( the same as NHS).
Sorry, but I knew the guys who set it up and they were very honest about their intentions.
Denplan dentists are disincentivised to offer anything but the treatment necessary to maintain dental health.

MrShady · 02/11/2023 20:17

@Angrymum22 it doesn't seem to matter with my dentist - I was with him as an NHS patient and now with denplan
I pay £20 a month which is less than it would be just to pay for 2 x hygiene appointments and 2 x check ups
TBH without denplan I couldn't afford the hygienist or check up and would likely only go once a year

Since I've been on it I've had an extraction, 2 fillings, some composite bonding, emergency appointments, a lump in my mouth checked, couple of teeth smoothed off that I've chipped, x rays...

TheDogsKnees · 02/11/2023 20:18

I saw my dentist last week and was advised prior by the receptionist to make sure I keep up with appointments as they are now primarily a private practice and I will be removed from the patient list if I don't. The same dentist I've been seeing for the last few years on NHS suddenly took issue with my bottom canine teeth which I cannot floss all the way between as they slightly overlap in the middle with the teeth next to them. It's very minor as my bottom teeth look straight and I use floss picks instead. Two of my top teeth are slightly crooked but, again never been mentioned until this appointment. She told me I could have invisalign braces for £3k with free whitening and was very pushy in trying to get me to have a consultation. I left thinking that it was very obvious that she is now primarily a private dentist! I also have an overbite as does my mum and a dentist once told her that it's an attractive feature in women so 🤷‍♀️!

Ignore this hustler. You have lovely teeth and a beautiful smile.

Icefoot · 02/11/2023 20:22

I think a lot of private medical care is like this. My friend and I have the same condition in our feet. The NHS has told me there's nothing to be done for a cure, but gave me exercises that help. My friend has had endless therapies and 2 operations privately, but is in no better position than I am.

That’s good to hear. Although it’s doesn’t surprise me that they were NHS up until recently. Even at £20 a month they are still being paid more than NHS. It’s biggest benefit to the dentist is spreading the payments so they are paid the same each month.
We use a plan that covers 2xexams and 2xscale a year and you get 20% off all private fees apart from implants.
Charging a proper fee for fillings allows us the time to restore the tooth and the ability to use the top end materials. There is a huge difference in cost. We pay about £8-10 for the composite we use on the NHS and £30-40 on the private composite material. There was a time before the current contract ( known as the 2006 contract devilishly introduce by Mr Blair’’s Government)when you could use the more expensive materials but no chance nowadays. When you get paid the same amount of money for one filling as two you have to cut costs to the bone.

MrShady · 02/11/2023 21:29

@Angrymum22 they still do NHS but I moved house, missed an appointment and was kicked off the list Sad
Being a terrified patient I begged and they kept me on as private via denplan because I can't face another dentist
They aren't taking on NHS now but have retained the ones they have. Been with them 26 years

MrShady · 02/11/2023 21:30

I don't actually know what the filling stuff was last time. Broke a tooth very slightly and it didn't need drilling or injections, was like a putty that they cured?

BrightGreenMoonBuggy · 02/11/2023 21:33

Omg don’t even think about surgery! What a lovely smile / teeth!

theunbelievabletruth · 02/11/2023 21:35

I'd give my eye teeth for your gnashers OP.. beautiful teeth and gorgeous smile.

AgnesX · 24/01/2024 09:40

I wish my teeth looked like that 😞
