Hi,
Not even sure why I’m posting, just in case someone can help.
I have my NHS dentist (been with him for almost 10 years) who is absolutely brilliant and never had any issues with my teeth other than the odd filling, but no issues with the layout or structure of them. However I was also at a private dentist during the in between lockdowns when dentists could open but the NHS check up backlog was so long, so I went to a private dentist to get a check up. He was fab too, however he pointed out so many issues with my teeth and gave me a quotation of around 5k (bleaching, composite bonds and some kind of brace too), ever since then I’ve absolutely hated my teeth. He pointed out that I have a huge overbite or overjet (can’t remember exactly which one) and something to do with the layout of my bottom jaw being too far back and I could get surgery if I wanted to fix it. I said I’d never noticed it and he said if I take some side profile pictures I’ll see it. So I did, and ever since then, I’ve hated my face. My bottom jaw is so far behind my top jaw it looks awful. And when I smile it looks like my teeth are projecting forwards and sticking out. He said it’s a combination of 25 years worth of nail biting and just the layout of my jaw.

I had train tracks as a teen for the straightness and I’m fine with the straightness of my teeth now, but now I absolutely despise my face because of how ridiculous it looks having my jaw that far back and my teeth sticking out, it looks like I’ve got buck teeth. I don’t want to get surgery on my jaw either but ever since he said that I’ve never got it out of my head. Looking at my side profile, does it look so far from normal? Is it completely obvious that my bottom jaw is really far back and my top teeth stick out? When I went back to my NHS dentist and told him he was appalled and said it’s slightly lower back but not awfully so and he would never have flagged it as a problem, and obviously I trust him, but it’s so hard to stop feeling self conscious about it now

No pics! But who cares? I am a dentist and I have awful squiffy teeth and a class 2 malocclusion and I drink faaaar to much red wine and coffee. Only other dentists notice it and I don't give a rat's arse! You're focusing on this as a negative instead of a positive! It makes you who you are. He's Def quoting you for the Invisalign etc and that's ok because it's his job to do so! You don't have to listen to him! I bet with pics wed all say you were gorgeous anyway!

This. Retired dentist.

Remember it is their job to advise you of the full range of options. Kind of like my roofer just told me I needed a new chimney even though I hadn’t asked him to look, I’d have been pissed off if he hadn’t mentioned it. At least now I can make an informed decision.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 16:33

Most private dentists are considered 'aesthetic dentists'
What??? And you're a dentist and think this?! No they're not, most private dentists are doing the same work as NHS ones. The sign above the establishment and the website's information is usually a clue about whether someone is a cosmetic dentist or a bog standard private dentist. Where do you think the millions of us who cannot get access to an NHS dentist are getting our fillings and root canals done??

Lochness1975 · 02/11/2023 16:33

You have beautiful teeth and smile. I honestly can’t see what’s supposed to be wrong with your jaw!

AtrociousCircumstance · 02/11/2023 16:34

That dentist just wanted to push for some costly treatments for his own financial advantage. Your teeth are amazing!

TheDogsMother · 02/11/2023 16:34

My private dentist did this. They went through a long list of things that they could do along with all the prices which added up to quite a number. It was like being at a car dealership being sold optional extras so I said lets just leave all this until any issues crop up. They are in the business of making money so just ignore them. Your teeth are lovely and you have nothing to worry about.

HunterBidensBurnerPhone · 02/11/2023 16:35

I think it's fucking disgraceful that a man is trying to profit off of making a woman feel shit about her appearance.

Fuck him all the way into the sea. What a cunt.

There's nothing wrong at all with your teeth or your profile. In fact I have a very similar overbite to yours and I think I'm pretty fit. And no twat dentist on the beg for my money would make me think otherwise.

BitterAndTwistedClub · 02/11/2023 16:35

Your teeth and smile are absolutely gorgeous. Don’t change your appearance just to line the private dentist’s pocket! Makes me angry when I hear things like this!

stayathomer · 02/11/2023 16:35

Op I’d give anything for your teeth! As others have said they’re just up selling!

Think the pictures are working now. I’m happy with my teeth from the front- it’s just the side profile I absolutely hate now. It’s crazy because it’s not something I would have ever noticed before but now I’m paranoid about how it looks.

I knew I had a small jaw (i was told this when I got my train tracks) and I’ve got TMJ (my jaw cracks everytime it opens) but I didn’t realise quite how big the overbite/overjet is. Apparently it would need surgery and then braces afterwards to properly fix/align and I really don’t want that but I’m so paranoid of my smile and my face from the side now.

and although I’m happy with them from the front, Another thing he pointed out is that from the front my top and bottom jaw don’t seem to align or something like that because the middle of my top teeth isn’t in line with the bottom teeth, although this doesn’t bother me as much as the overbite/overjet thing

Honestly there is nothing wrong here. It's a small overbite. My husband's is worse and I only notice when he points it out. Noone notices your teeth or over bitten and noone thinks you have buck teeth.

Also your teeth look in such a good condition. Mine are awful despite taking good care of them.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about this at all. He was trying to get money out of you. I go to a private dentist and he's never suggested expensive cosmetic stuff unless I have asked.

IdleAnimations · 02/11/2023 16:36

If you watch any TV show or music video pre 2005 you’ll note people used to have ‘normal’ teeth. Some even crooked and in all tones of yellow to white.

The new standard seems to be ‘Turkey Teeth’ which is essentially ripping out healthy teeth for fake ones to get the ‘perfect smile’. Personally I don’t like it as your teeth are meant to be functional. They aren’t meant to be perfectly straight or bright white. 2bh, a lot of Turkey teeth look comedic over nice.

We have no NHS dentists anymore in my area, 8 years ago a private dentist made out my teeth were falling apart and I’d need a root cancel, removals + fake ones to the tune of 4k upwards. I went to a different private dentist which was a franchise (so prices standardised) and was told my teeth are fine, just a bit of plaque which a routine clean will sort. No issues since and visit that dentist yearly.

I can but presume the first dentist noted I was wearing a suit and thought I had money, the second dentist saw me in a hoody and leggings. I do strongly recommend ‘looking poorer’ at a private dentist as they won’t try to up-sell nonsense you dont need. Some are unfortunately vultures who see us as cash cows especially now NHS dentists are gone in most areas.

ps - Your smile is lovely. I was expecting a horror show!

Ukholidaysaregreat · 02/11/2023 16:36

OMG! Your teeth look fabulous! Your private dentist should be ashamed they are trying to upsell product to you. That is the same reason I fast forward beauty product videos on YouTube. They introduce a problem you didn't know you had - so far this week thin lips!? And problem wrinkles?!? And then sell you a £30 jar of face cream to fix it. Cheeky bastards! I would be well pleased with your lovely teeth and jaws!!

LizzieSiddal · 02/11/2023 16:36

My DD has exactly the same issue with a private dentist when she was a teenager and actually you look very similar to my DD (who is very pretty, as are you!).

I was appalled when he mentioned surgery and went for a second opinion. The second dentist said it was nonsense to suggest my DD needed surgery. About 5 years later the first dentist was in the newspaper as he was going through a disciplinary procedure and was found guilty of suggesting to under 18s that they needed treatments which were not suitable for them!

Please ignore everything that awful dentist has told you!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 02/11/2023 16:37

My private dentist who I saw for a think a bridge and implant work wanted me to get them bleached. I didn’t want to get them bleached. Then he tried to suggest I needed work/braces for my overcrowded bottom teeth which I admit could be fixed but I really hate the idea of any work being done to them.

A private dentist will sell you anything. If they can sell Botox treatments at some practices then that says it all to me, and I avoid.

3luckystars · 02/11/2023 16:39

Your teeth are lovely. You don’t see your face from that angle so why do you care? Obviously other people don’t care, they like the ‘you’ that is fizzing away inside you and not your side profile. (Which is lovely btw)

I went to a dentist for some specialised treatment that my normal dentist doesn’t do and he kept going on about my jaw, asking if it hurts and if I get headaches etc and was hinting at doing something to it. I just kept saying no no no pain, they are just like fortune tellers latching on to your weaknesses.

Forget it, look at yourself head on ( the way nature intended) and enjoy your lovely teeth!

Tryingtryingandtrying · 02/11/2023 16:39

Never trust someone when they want to make money out of you.

caramac04 · 02/11/2023 16:40

The private dentist is offering absolute perfection but at what price? Broken jaw etc!
You look absolutely great, lovely smile and only a tiny overbite. Part of what makes us, is, is our non-perfections.
Your teeth and jaw are better than mine and many others.

zingally · 02/11/2023 16:41

tbh, don't worry about it!

Millions of people would kill for your lovely straight white teeth!

I have the opposite problem, with a significant underbite, and my top and bottom teeth in no way line up. Something my (also private) dentist likes to tell me ALL about. But you know what? I just shrug and say "that's just my face."

ManateeFair · 02/11/2023 16:41

private dentist

The word 'private' is the only word you need to tell what's going on here. By critiquing the appearance of your teeth they're hoping that you'll go away feeling insecure and miserable about them, and consequently spend a lot of money on cosmetic dentistry. They're trying to make money out of you, pure and simple.

What makes this even more shitty is that not only would cosmetic dentistry be insanely expensive, it would also a really long, uncomfortable and unpleasant process for you to endure - and all completely unnecessary.

It's a bit like when you go to a skincare counter and they start pointing out fine lines you never knew you had, in the hope that you'll feel terrible and buy a £60 moisturiser from them to sort it out.

Your teeth are GREAT! Most people would kill to have teeth as straight, white and even as that. And there's nothing wrong with your jaw at all. Nobody really has a perfectly aligned upper and lower jaw, but nobody would never in a million years look at you and think 'Oh, look at that receding lower jaw line' - you look completely normal. And your teeth are, in fact, the kind of teeth most women absolutely dream of having!

CarrotsAndCheese · 02/11/2023 16:41

Urgh, I really hate that he's given you insecurities about your appearance when you were perfectly happy before. Your face looks completely normal to me. You have beautiful teeth and a gorgeous smile. What an arsehole! It's not ok to pick holes in someone's appearance and make them feel self-conscious and paranoid so that you can make money out of them. And it's not as if you can avoid seeing a dentist like you can avoid visiting a cosmetic surgeon, for example, if you don't want your appearance to be ripped apart! You are beautiful OP; please ignore him!

ABCXYZ17 · 02/11/2023 16:42

Your teeth are great, don’t listen.

CaramelMac · 02/11/2023 16:42

I once had a private dentist tell me I needed a filling, I was quite surprised as I’d never had one and my previous dentist (who I’d seen since I was a child and had since retired) had told me that me and my brother obviously had genetically very strong teeth as neither of us had needed a filling well into our 30s, so I got a second opinion and I didn’t need a filling at all, I’m in my 40s now and I’ve still never had a filling, just a private dentist on the make!

Picklewicklepickle · 02/11/2023 16:43

You have really lovely teeth!

I have the opposite and a slight underbite, correcting it sounds like a PITA and my dentist said it’s not worth it if it’s not causing me any issues. Luckily it’s not really noticeable and the only problem I have is not being able to rip sellotape/packets open with my teeth. I hate that they can prey on your insecurities (or give you new ones!) to sell you stuff.

Sadandhurt23 · 02/11/2023 16:46

OP, your teeth are beautiful. They really don't need a lot of work done on them. A private dentist will point out every flaw so that you agree to have them sorted.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 02/11/2023 16:46

Just showed your side profile to my husband and he wanted to know what was wrong with it.

Your teeth are lovely.

Sarkyspice · 02/11/2023 16:47

Private dentist aka greedy b***d! Ignore him. We're not all perfect!
