at the supermarket before the customer in front has finished loading their shopping?
Happened several times to me just recently. This morning, I had to ask the customer behind me to allow me more room on the conveyor belt as she hadn't left enough space for me to get my shopping on.

I think it's very rude and I always wait until the person in front has finished putting their items on the belt, then I do mine.

Lollipopsicle · 03/11/2023 21:09

I've never had this problem. Must be lucky I guess. In fact, I did a massive shop in Aldi today and the woman behind me looked at my trolley and politely asked if she was leaving a big enough gap before unloading hers after me. I said yes and it worked out perfectly. I unloaded everything before the checkout lady started scanning as well, then I plonked it all back in the trolley and went over to the shelf at the back to pack it, which is what everybody should do but I hardly ever see anyone doing it.

Dontbehorridhenry · 03/11/2023 21:20

I thought the etiquette was you wait until they have finished loading, then act surprised and say thankyou when they then put the divider down, as if they have been super kind.

SparklyRainbows · 03/11/2023 21:41

I think its OK if you only have a few items left to load but if you aren't left enough space to finish loading then that's bad.

Lulu49 · 03/11/2023 21:46

I hate this!!! I was so annoyed that someone did that to me once I chucked all their stuff back into their trolley and I've also swiped it all to the end of the conveyor belt so the person has had to catch it before it fell off the end. Whoops.

Definitely! I love the adrenalin rush of the checkout experience at Aldi. I really should get out more 😁

I'm intrigued. How are Aldi checkouts different from other ones? There's no Aldi round where I live.

The cashiers at Aldi hurl the products through the checkouts at a million miles an hour. It's hard to keep up with the pace and get the items into your trolley quick enough 😀

I have my bags ready and open and my card to hand, always pay as soon as the cashier has scanned everything, and usually manage to have all my stuff packed and back in the trolley before the receipt prints out.

Yes, I try to do that, too. I also organise my trolley so that the cans & bottles etc are at the front, to go on first and into the bags first.

If people start loading before I've finished, I just say, "Sorry, can you wait till I've got my stuff on?"

Now and again, it's an old lady with a basket and I take pity and ignore it.

I also hate it when some bloke is pushing you with their trolley and than stands over the card reader, glowering. I had one and I said, "Scouse me, I need to pay," a couple of times and he just leant forward more. The cashier said "When you're ready..."

I said in a loud voice, "I'd like to pay, but this guy is standing in front of the card reader and won't move. She asked him to stand back and he went half a step and when I put the card in, he was still looming over. I asked why he wanted to see my PIN and if he wanted to know my mother's maiden name.

He grudgingly took the hint and moved a bit more, with his face if thunder.

I had a massive rant about this on here the other week, I bet it's Aldi! I do my weekly shop there, and find that's pretty much the only place that people do it! People leave you about 30cm for a full trolley! My thoughts on my previous post were 'why don't people use their eyes and their bloody brain?!' - still applies!!

I had someone start scanning there shopping whilst I was loading my shopping at waitrose . I told the woman with child off as I hadn’t finishing packing my stuff shopping into the bag my shopping was still there. Bearing in mind I had patiently waited in a queue and let the person before me pack their shopping before I jumped on and started scanning as is normal . honestly the cheek of it I couldn’t believe she was willing to front it out and of course there wasn’t a staff member to witness it as I think they ducked away .
My best worst experience was in Savers though where a woman left her basket on the floor behind the queue and people had Started queuing behind her basket so I stepped over her basket to reach the items on the wall for sale she came back and accused me of dangling my private parts over her shopping now bear in mind I just stepped over fully clothed with undergarments overgarments etc not pausing over her basket . She told me she wasn’t raised to dangle private parts over people’s shopping as its not clean hygiene and that she doesn’t want my private bits dangling over her shopping. My partner rose to the bait foolishly I knew she was bonkers so didn’t bother and actually just apologised for stepping over her basket but she was just queue placemarking. As a teenager I remember reading the headline stabbing in Baytrading over leggings .

Even worse when the person in front doesn’t bother with the next customer thing. However I leave about six inches put my stuff on then wait for the customer in front to notice “ not their shopping” then a manager has to be called to take off said items.

Why don’t you just do the next customer divider rather than standing there watching the checkout person scanning your stuff in the other persons transaction? Seems a waste of your time.

I mean it’s great if the person in front does it but if they haven’t then I just do it 🤷‍♀️

I don’t know if there’s a rule on who should do it. Maybe everyone is looking at you and wondering why you haven’t done it? 😁

sobermum23 · 04/11/2023 06:30

Funnily timed incident yesterday - don't go to Aldi normally as not one near me. Went to one near my parents - people in front of me not finished unloading so being mindful of this thread I stood there waiting before putting my items on the conveyor belt. As I waited the person behind me started loading their items on the conveyor belt!

Made me chuckle (is this sad? Confused)

sashh · 04/11/2023 06:42

I've had it in Tesco, and then the checkout person moved the conveyor belt so the person behind me had their stuff next to the cashier but half my stuff was still in the trolly.

PEARLJAM123 · 04/11/2023 07:43

Yep. Aldi. People are rude and do not think about others.

It is common courtesy to put the 'next customer' sign for the person behind, but wasting peoples time for the sake of the person in front not put the sign behind their shopping is a bit childish isn't it?

SinnerBoy · 04/11/2023 09:36

I always put the divider in at the back of my shopping. I usually push the ones in the channel back, too, for whoever is behind me.

orangegato · 02/11/2023 14:46

Always happens in Aldi as the checkouts are an Olympic sport.

Load from the back so they can’t get near.

Yes, this. If you start with the light stuff right at the back of the conveyor you can stop this. If you've room left over when you've finished you can push the whole lot further down.

DeanElderberry · 04/11/2023 10:41

I really don't understand this 'load from the back' thing. I start to load when there is six inches or so clear on the belt and fill the space as it becomes available. The belt, whether it is moving or stationary, is usually full from the front, where the cashier is scanning items, to within a few inches of the back where the next customer is adding their stuff. In order, it they have any wit or decency. I stand in front of the trolley to discourage the eejits.

An twerp putting a dividing bar down and starting to put their stuff on while my trolley is still half full is annoying and pointless - they aren't going to get to the checkout until I've gone through. I have to conclude that some people are deeply dim, as well as ill mannered.

Munkimoo · 04/11/2023 11:04

I leave my trolley at the end so they can't get to the conveyor belt until i finish. It's rude, but then some people either didn't get taught manners, forgotten them out just think their superior.

SquishingWell · 04/11/2023 12:33

Hahaha I was so annoyed at someone for doing this to me in Aldi the other day 😂 I am so happy it’s not just me!

BigButtons · 04/11/2023 12:34

Hate it when people do this. I remember once pushing the woman behind me’s stuff backwards as I didn’t have enough room to load a very large shop.
why did people do it?

Gingernan · 04/11/2023 16:52

I haven't experienced people doing that, it's very rude and pushy. At least during covid they hung back.I still giv e people space .

T1Dmama · 06/11/2023 09:49

The second they start to do it just politely say “excuse me, can you wait til I’ve finished unloading mine please?”
if you get any comment just again say politely “ sorry but my trolly load needs more than 3 inches!”
when did we stop communicating and start giving side eye & shoving people’s shopping instead?!

LinkyDooda · 06/11/2023 10:21

Feels a bit of a faux-pas yes

sollenwir · 06/11/2023 10:35

We were in the supermarket the other day, literally buying one thing - we came across a till where someone had loaded stuff and left their trolley but was nowhere to be seen. Did we nip in front? Of course we did. Guy in front did point out that there was someone else there, to which I said 'yes, the stuff is there but we will be served before they even get back'. As it was we were literally being served when they returned, so we didn't hold them up. They were quite happy to potentially hold others up though, by loading stuff and then going on a jolly though. I wouldn't have done this had we had more than one item, or if they appeared to only have a few items, or if there had been another till without a queue, but in this situation it worked out fine. I think that some people really do take the biscuit with the queue holding - if your stuff is there but you are not there/not in a position to pay (so have left friend, partner etc) then it makes sense for someone else to nip in!
