at the supermarket before the customer in front has finished loading their shopping?
Happened several times to me just recently. This morning, I had to ask the customer behind me to allow me more room on the conveyor belt as she hadn't left enough space for me to get my shopping on.

I work in a supermarket, at the kiosk end of things, and it drives me nuts when another customer will start putting their things onto the counter before I've finished putting the previous customer through, particularly if neither of them has used a basket.

I have to keep asking 'is this yours? Is this?' because it's so easy for loads to get mixed up, and yet it's apparently my fault when they do.

Please, just wait, at least until the last item has been scanned through. Or use a basket to keep it separate.

The idea in Aldi and Lidl is that you put your stuff back into the trolley then move to the shelf at the end to bag your stuff.

Yeah but it’s not just Aldi and Lidl who start putting your stuff through before the other person has finished. I’ve had it at Iceland and also many other shops that are not supermarkets such as B&M etc.

It is really annoying when the cashier starts ramming your stuff through while the person before is still there and sometimes before you’ve even managed to empty your trolley! And not only that, the cashier is then already asking you for your money before you’ve had chance to pack your first item! Sometimes they do it before checking whether or not you need a bag and then look surprised when you interrupt them and say “can I have a bag please”. I also make them wait until I’ve packed everything before I pay.

Op in response to your thread, I think this possibly happens at Aldi due to the above I have just mentioned. I don’t start putting my things on the belt until the person in front has finished doing so but I can understand the anxiety of people behind wanting to load their shopping onto the belt before the cashier starts hurling their shopping towards the customer in front of them while they are still unloading everything out of the trolley and while the person in front is still packing their things!

PickAChew · 02/11/2023 15:16

I like to thank impatient people for offering to pay for my shopping.

Tisfortired · 02/11/2023 15:19

I’ve had this at Aldi too a few times it really annoys me, especially as I only ever go to Aldi to do ‘big shops’ so I’m usually loading about £100 worth on the belt and some
idiot starts putting a loaf of bread and a spatula on when I’m only halfway through.

I think it's really rude and I usually use the divider thingy to push their stuff down to the end of the belt, leaving a space more than big enough to put all my stuff on.

I did this in Lidl a while back, I hadn't even got half my stuff on when the guy (of course) behind started putting his stuff on so I just pushed his back with the divider. He then muttered "stupid slut" under his breath so I said very clearly "Well aren't you just the charmer"? Followed by parting shot of "misogynistic arse" as I left the checkout. Cashier just rolled her eyes, she probably sees it a lot.

Slitheringheights · 02/11/2023 15:20

I know it’s not the same, but in Lidl this morning. I walked up to the tills with a box of Rice Krispies. A women with a whole trolley saw me walking up to the till but bet me to it. Now how hard was it for her to let me go in front for just one item? I know I’m crabit just now but dear god, how rude!! She wasn’t In a hurry as she was talking to another mum when she left. Rude rude rude

Tangled123 · 02/11/2023 15:21

This was a huge annoyance of mine when I worked on checkouts. I used to turn the belt off so the customer in front could load more, but I was still surprised at how often this happened and how little manners some people have.

IncompleteSenten · 02/11/2023 15:23

What you do is you let them and you pass your items out of your trolley to the cashier one at a time and you say I'm so sorry but I wasn't left any room so this is going to take a while.

I'm petty as fuck.

Callipygion · 02/11/2023 15:24

That’s happened to me. I just said to them “I haven’t finished unloading. I need more room. Please move your stuff back.”

AngelinaFibres · 02/11/2023 15:25

Riverstep · 02/11/2023 14:50

I don’t shop in either Aldi or Lidl purely because of the check outs. Hate it 🤣.

This. I know its cheaper and sometimes that's more important than a nicer experience but the ones around me are horrible.

Only happened to me a couple of times but this is what I did too.

Mochudubh · 02/11/2023 15:28

I think the opposite also applies when you're in the queue behind someone with a loaf of bread and a spatula, who doesn't put it on the belt until the shopper in front has paid and the entire belt is clear. I'm standing behind them eyes boring into the back of their head willing them to "Puuuuuuuuut, the shopping on the beeeeeeeeelt".

Does anyone else passive-aggressively place the divider rather firmly down if the person in front of you doesn't do it when they've finished loading the belt?

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 02/11/2023 15:28

It is rude, worse when they move you shopping piling it high so they can get on. I still wish I told the couple who did this what the fuck did they think they were doing.

Ladybrrrd · 02/11/2023 15:30

Fill from the back and let it roll down! Be relentless and don't give them any space!

Greenpolkadot · 02/11/2023 15:30

Had this but not in Aldi.
I used the plastic shopping divider to ' scrape ' theirs back so i could put the rest of my shopping on..Plus I won't move forward until Iv got it all on the conveyor belt

LakeTiticaca · 02/11/2023 15:31

It depends if you are one of the idiots who walks halfway up the belt before they start unloading, rather than loading from the end.

LadyWiddiothethird · 02/11/2023 15:34

Only seems to happen to me in Lidl,I give my death stare which I am famous for! Doesn’t make any difference but I feel better for it.

orchardsquare · 02/11/2023 15:35

This annoys me too, and happens at different supermarkets. I don't usually get that much and like to spread it about the conveyor. Often people will get right up behind me and start tutting, then as soon as there's an inch of space start loading massive trollies on, piling their shopping up on top of itself. It's like they're in a massive hurry (often older couples shopping together) but it makes no difference to the length of time it takes.

purplecorkheart · 02/11/2023 15:39

I noticed this happens in my local Lidl alright. I tend to put a few bits towards the front and then a item at the divider leaving a big gap in the middle. I stand in such a way that if someone tries to push the divider forward then I can stop them. Fill the gap with other stuff from trolley.

easylikeasundaymorn · 02/11/2023 15:39

GirrlCrush · 02/11/2023 14:44

Not rude if they can see the items you have left to load and can gauge how much space they will need

This. If they do it correctly and leave enough room it's fine. Otherwise somewhere where they check out really fast like lidl they could end up holding up the queue if they've got a full trolley to load up.

lilyblue5 · 02/11/2023 15:40

knew this was Aldi before I even read the comments. The checkout experience is just bonkers.

I just guesstimate how much space I'm going to need and put the divider in the right place before I start unloading - works every time!

IslandsInTheSunshine · 02/11/2023 15:43

Doesn't your supermarket have those plastic 'bar dividers' that you put on the conveyor belt? They separate out the shopping of the person in front and your shopping. The bar moves with the conveyor belt.

I always scan and pack my own shopping with a handset, but if I can't, use a 'divider ' on the belt.

AnnieKayTee · 02/11/2023 15:43

I always load from the end (furthest from the cashier) so nobody can get to the conveyor because my trolley is there. Do other people not do this?
