at the supermarket before the customer in front has finished loading their shopping?
Happened several times to me just recently. This morning, I had to ask the customer behind me to allow me more room on the conveyor belt as she hadn't left enough space for me to get my shopping on.

But that only works if you do need more room. Not if they have left enough space.

So as I would have left you enough room, I would reply "Certainly, lets see how you get on and if you need more room I will move my stuff then".

And if you then loaded the belt inefficiently, spreading your stuff far and wide to make your petulant point, I would also enjoy giving you a very polite lesson in how to pack a conveyor belt - see if you move your lettuce so it is next to your cucumber then you will have plenty of room. And try not to have the cucumber on the diagonal, and why not place your bag of popcorn on your large bag of crisps, and those cans of tomatoes could be stood up neatly and loo at the space that saves.

So you see, both of us can use our words and be strong.

Luckily I've never had to be assert myself and be strong, because I've managed to get through life without ever falling out with someone at the supermarket. But then I'm not a wannabe Alpha female who likes to go around picking unnecessary fights and causing unnecessary arguments.

Yeah very clever, but it wasn't you behind me. The thing is they didn't leave me enough room, so I asked them to move their stuff back to give me space to get mine on. And no I don't spread my stuff out actually, I load it quite compactly. No need to be passive aggressive.

Unbelievably rude. See also not putting the divider after your stuff. It's like some people were raised by chimpanzees 😂

Oh FFS yeah this is grim and vile. Feel like calling 101. (999 even.) Like, were you raised in a barn? Just put the divider down you pillock! Argh! Angry

Yes, put the divider right on the end of the conveyor and start loading it from the back forward, rather than starting closest to the cashier and working backwards.

I don't see how this can work though, because if you have quite a lot of stuff, the divider will move with the shopping, and you will run out of room, because the belt - and the divider - will soar towards the cashier before half your stuff has gone up. (And the person behind will very likely start loading their shopping onto the belt.)

Far more sensible (IMO) to keep far from the cashier, (close to the end of the conveyor belt with your trolley behind you.) Then load from the trolley, and don't put the divider down. As I said, by being near the end of the belt, you can block off the person behind from putting any shopping on. And then you put the divider on when your last item has gone on.

I must say though, in spite of it being annoying when people start putting their stuff on the belt before you've finished your load, I don't find it happens very often to be honest.

I mostly use self checkout these days but if not I use the trolley behind me to block their access to the belt, put my shopping on in the order I’ll pack it and then put the divider down and move towards the cashier when the person before me has finished. Like a civilised person. I don’t get all the pushing and shoving from behind at all, you won’t get through until my shopping has been scanned, packed and paid for so what’s the point in breathing down my neck, ramming my backside with your trolley and trying to load your shopping onto the belt before I’m done? Stupid.

I work in a supermarket in the Uk....it very much DOES happen. Worse at Xmas when one will "bagsy" a place in the queue and the other one will carry on shopping, woefully underestimating how long they are taking to "just grab a few bits" so the OH, me and the rest of the queue are all getting more and more pissed off until they finally return in blissful ignorance of the amount of people are ready for their blood. Never seen a full on row about it, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see it.
I see this at least once a day. Someone will be behind another customer who has a big shop, l'll finish scanning the first customer's items, then notice that the second customer has vanished into thin air. With a queue behind them.
On occasion they've taken long enough for the first customer to pay, me to scan their shopping, then have to sit there until they deign to return clutching a bottle of milk/loaf of bread/wine/whatever. Sometimes they apologise, sometimes they laugh and say "can't have a Saturday evening without the wine!" while the people behind them are quietly fuming.
At least tell me you've forgotten something, l'll scan the first customer's shopping slightly more slowly than usual to give you time to get back.
At least an apology (to the queue, it doesn't matter to me, it's nice to have a minute when it's busy) helps a bit.
Laughing and making a joke of it usually just pisses people off when their fish fingers are defrosting while you've been on a tour of the shop.

I was doing a big shop in Morrisons once and the person behind me decided they were in a massive hurry (also a big shop). So they put the divider down and started unloading, but I’d only put down about half my stuff.
So when the cashier was putting my stuff through it through I handed her every item in my trolley very slowly. Cashier and I were having a giggle whilst person behind was having a haemorrhage. Idiot.

Why would you be that petty? if the belt is long enough for you both to use to are offended that she is using the belt at the same time as you? I can't believe that people want sole exclusive use of the conveyor belt so much that they do petty things like that. What a life.

Noshowlomo · 02/11/2023 19:07

Load from the back people!
I worked in Asda about 20 years ago and saw this all the time. People are thick

Thick? it makes more logical sense to load from the front if you are being efficient. The items are already at the front for the cashier to scan.
Besides, if you leave any space on the conveyor belt in aldi at the front they will manually move the items down to the front, so you are unable to load from the back.

frenchfries111 · 03/11/2023 10:59

Because they put the divider down against my stuff (sorry I wasn’t clear). There was no room for me to unpack anymore. I put a few things on top but I had no room to put my stuff out.

Britneyfan · 03/11/2023 11:13

@Laiste its not just you, I definitely think people have become more selfish, rude and badly behaved. The general public appears to be seething with anger most of the time. You see it on here and in the supermarket, when driving and I see it at work too (I’m a GP), you’re not imagining it! I do think it hasn’t happened in a vacuum, there are reasons, people are just incredibly stressed with all the crap we have lived through in the U.K. in the past decade or so. The pandemic made it so much worse. It annoys me that it’s not officially recognised anywhere, a government worth their salt would understand and care that many people are barely coping with life these days to the point of loading the supermarket belt inadequately threatening to spill over into serious confrontations!

Daisybridge · 03/11/2023 18:10

It's one of my pet hates along with someone stretching across my shopping to get a divider which I will gladly do once I can reach it without leaning over someone's shopping.

wildwestpioneer · 03/11/2023 18:11

This is my absolute pet hate!

coffeeandpeace · 03/11/2023 18:28

I get people loading their shopping onto self service checkout while I am still bagging up mine. Such stupidity

YDBear · 03/11/2023 18:30

It’s both rude and stupid to start putting stuff on the conveyor before the person in front has finished. Why? It’s not going to get you through the checkout any sooner.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 03/11/2023 18:35

Never happened to me but I’d probably throw it back at them. So rude!

Missingpop · 03/11/2023 18:42

I don’t know about it being rude; but I do know it’s fucking petty if that’s all you’ve got go whinge about on a Friday morning when hundreds of people up & down the country have no electricity or gas; there are people who are flooded out of their homes with water & crap floating around in their homes but all you’ve got to grumble about is some sad fucker putting their shopping on the checkout belt before your finished doing yours; life’s such a bitch isn’t it eh??? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Stressybetty · 03/11/2023 19:02

Another thing that irks me in Sainsbury's is people with a few items or baskets queuing for or using the big trolley self checkouts when there's free tills on the basket ones. Don't know why they do it.

Northbright · 03/11/2023 19:15

Ooh Im getting really agitated just reading some of these stories. Useful to learn a few little techniques to piss off the Early Loaders. My pet hate is husbands who push past to the far end while you are still paying and start faffing about with getting their bags ready in their trolley. "TOO SOON, MOFO!!" is what I say in my head. But in real life I just ostentatiously hide the chip-and-pin thing with my hand (even if I'm not entering a pin) and look at them meaningfully so they think I think they are card-robbers and trying to see my Pin.. They always look embarrassed which is most satisfactory for petty old me.

Teachertired92 · 03/11/2023 19:21

See I think it depends on the situation! I’ve done it a couple of times when I’ve gone shopping for one thing, not got a trolley/basket and ended up buying more than I expected! I’ve then but it on the end of the conveyor belt and kept pulling it back at the belt moves to give the person in front room. But only because my arms were full!

restingbitchface30 · 03/11/2023 19:22

This drives me insane! I intentionally spread my shopping out so they have to move their stuff! Petty, yes. Do I give a F, no! Don’t be rude!

Swanny2 · 03/11/2023 19:40

It’s only fair game to load your shopping once the front loader has put the the “next customer” blocky thing on when they’ve finished their stuff, it also ok to dash off to get a forgotten item at this time with, “ooops, it’s just over there!” Slight curtsy, but guaranteed to be back before to person in front has even finished… we often let people in front if they have only a few items.

Shanda5 · 03/11/2023 19:52

This happened to me this evening! I hate it.

Told the guy it might be best to wait until I'd finished, so he wouldn't have to move his shopping again.

GirrlCrush · 02/11/2023 14:47

It qualifies as an Olympic sport if it's Aldi!

😂

Woodthroughthetrees · 03/11/2023 20:12

Omg yes! I nearly posted this question myself. So many people keep doing this to me. Why is this now a thing!!! It's so rude and really annoying when they never leave you enough space for your own shopping!
