at the supermarket before the customer in front has finished loading their shopping?
Happened several times to me just recently. This morning, I had to ask the customer behind me to allow me more room on the conveyor belt as she hadn't left enough space for me to get my shopping on.

We had a lovely new Aldi open last year, much bigger and lovely car park… I thought “ooh, time to go there every week, hooray!”

Went once, got in a panicky sweaty mess, being hurried along, bumped about etc, I hated it!!
So I’m still bouncing between Tesco, Asda, Morrisons… and moaning about the cost - but I just couldn’t cope with all that rushing and having your stuff chucked at you!

justsaying2023 · 02/11/2023 16:03

I had this in tesco I asked the woman behind to wait until I had my shopping on and she just waved a divider at me and said "that's why I put this on" I tried to explain that I couldn't fit my shopping between the cashier and the divider - she hadn't left any room at all and had to hand each item to the cashier individually over her shopping and then go and pack it to allow space for the next item, well when I say had to... she still couldn't see it would have been quicker to let me finish, just kept pointing out that her shopping was behind the divider.

Why didn’t you just go to the self-checkouts? That’s what they’re for.

For all she knew your partner could have been following behind you with a trolley.

Edited

We don't have self-checkouts at our local Lidl or Aldi either.

PuppyMonkey · 02/11/2023 16:05

It’s definitely an Aldi thing, this, never had it in another supermarket. I’ve had to get the divider and slide it further back on numerous occasions. I did it once in a very pissed off mood and some of the stuff CF behind was loading fell on floor and I just went “whoops”.

Our Aldi is mostly a self service now though so none of this fun any more.

muddyford · 02/11/2023 16:06

I have had this in Lidl. Person behind didn't leave me enough space so I handed each individual item to the assistant and he handed it solemnly back to me. Took ages and in the meantime another till opened and moron behind couldn't use it.

WhamBamThankU · 02/11/2023 16:11

This is annoying, but so is people assuming you'll let them infront of you just because they have maybe one less item than you. Absolutely not.

PosteriorPosterity · 02/11/2023 16:14

But don’t you stand at the end of the conveyor and only put items on the last 6-12 inches? I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever loaded a conveyor in a way that someone could start loading their shopping before I’m done.

But maybe I’m shopping wrong 😂

Happygerbil · 02/11/2023 16:18

I do this but leave plenty of space for the person to finish. And yes usually in Lidl/Aldi as so stressed about getting things out in time

Exactly, it makes the whole process take longer. I go slowly then on purpose, can't find my purse etc. Gives me great pleasure doing that (sad I know but so satisfying).

DoooooWhoop · 02/11/2023 16:25

I park my trolley at the end of the conveyor belt so they can't get their stuff on if they tried. And then I just freely have entire belt to put my stuff on.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 02/11/2023 16:28

I really need to visit an Aldi or Lidl in the UK. The ones I've been in here in Ireland are very chilled. The cashier will chat and will, if necessary, wait for you to put your stuff in your bags before putting more stuff through. Nobody uses the shelves to pack their bags.

The only thing they don't do that they will in some other supermarkets is help you pack your bags as there isn't enough room to put bags on the counter. You have to keep them in your trolly.

Tessasanderson · 02/11/2023 16:29

Yes its happened loads of times. TBH i just dont move my trolley from the start of the conveyor belt until i have fully loaded my shopping now. Seems to stop even the most impatient shopper.

Definitely! I love the adrenalin rush of the checkout experience at Aldi. I really should get out more 😁

You need to go to the front of your trolley and start unloading from there so the people behind you are stuck with the back end of your trolley blocking them from getting near the belt. Wink

MrShady · 02/11/2023 16:31

It's happened loads to me recently too! Never used to happen

You need a system Grin

I load on the belt
Heavy fridge and freezer stuff then light fridge freezer to heavy ambient stuff to light ambient

Open up large bags in trolley

Load fridge/freezer first into a bag and it'll come down heaviest first then ambient

BeeDavis · 02/11/2023 16:41

One of my pet hates! Also hate when people finish putting their shopping on and don’t put a stopper at the end! 🤣

AInightingale · 02/11/2023 16:44

Couple of times lately in Tesco, men (on both occasions!) have actually stood impatiently right behind me at the self service checkouts without waiting in the line for one to become free. If this becomes a thing, I will at some point egg someone. It feels passive-aggressive in the extreme.

I slam it down!

Pumpkingnome · 02/11/2023 16:53

Common curtsey has become extinct

Laiste · 02/11/2023 16:55

I agree BUT what's equally infuriating is when you have a big trolly load to sort (i shop for me and my elderly mum and it gets a bit mixed) and the person in front takes up the whole blinking belt with 5 items putting them on all spaced right out as the belt moves! And then we all stand there with 5 bits taking up the whole belt while the person in front of them dithers around at the till.

I think 'oh take 2 seconds to just slide your bloody stuff up a bit so i can start sorting my big mess of a trolly load out'.

But i'd never say it of course! 😂

Someone did this to me the other day so I let my 4 year old scan the items, took forever ha!

cakewench · 02/11/2023 16:56

This irritates me as well.

I'm sure someone has mentioned it by now but: I leave my trolley at the end in such a way that they can't reach the belt easily and only move it once I'm down to my last few items to unload.

Britneyfan · 02/11/2023 16:56

I can’t stand this, it’s so rude. Also rude for the checkout person to start scanning before the person ahead of you has packed up and left. Both those things happened the one time I tried to go to Aldi to try and reduce the cost of my food shop. I have bipolar disorder and am under a lot of stress in my life right now and I just literally can’t cope with Aldi, I genuinely found the experience so completely stressful it impacted my mental health badly for a good week or two afterwards. I literally left shaking and in tears. To be honest I find even the mainstream supermarkets a stressful environment in person but I can cope with it if I have to. I usually get home deliveries though, I wish Aldi would do them too. Like a pp, I am left with no real choice but to keep shopping at mainstream supermarkets while worrying about the cost. I feel excluded and shut out of being able to get cheaper food shopping like my peers because of my mental health condition.

Laiste · 02/11/2023 16:58

I agree with putting divider down at the end.

If i've got so much that i can't quite get the divider on before i walk down to start packing i'll leave the divider there ready for the next person to just push on. People always happy to. (and shove my bread on for me with it as well 😃)
