Is it too early? (Christmas Tree)

When do you put yours up?

Now the nights are drawing in I'm fancying putting a tree up to make the living room cosy with the lights and decorations.

It's too early, isn't it?!

It's my first Christmas in a new house, I didn't have room for a tree before so I'm somewhat over excited...

Glad you've been talked out of it 😀

Fairy lights will be twinkly and cheerful for you.

For everyone saying it’s too early? Who says it is? Where is the rule book saying when you should put them up? If it makes you and your family happy then do it! 🎄

Relax @Milsie892

no one says it’s a “rule”

They are answering the OP’s question

We start Christmassy things from Dec 1st as it's the start of advent. 1st of Dec to 6th of Jan is more than enough Christmas in my opinion 😅

Dec 1st is close to the start of Advent. Sometimes it's actually the 1st. This year it's the 3rd.

I would only allow shops to stock anything Christmas related from the first working day in Advent which this year is the 4th but could be as early as 28 November.

I would also like an Advent calendar that actually covers Advent rather than a December calendar which they all are.

TheBirdintheCave · 02/11/2023 14:51

@DappledThings Interesting! I'm a Catholic and I've always been told it's the first. At least that's how it was done at my school. I know one of the four candles at church are lit on the Sundays before Christmas day though.

IncomingTraffic · 02/11/2023 14:55

It’s the start of November. Do these threads get earlier every year?

In a couple of years we’ll have ‘just back from a week in Tenerife. Feels a bit depressing. Would it be too early to put the Christmas tree up, or should i
wait til the schools go back in September?’

There are other ways to cheer yourself up when the nights start drawing in without starting Christmas ever earlier.

CremeEggThief · 02/11/2023 14:57

It would be for me, but I've seen Christmas trees up before Halloween some years around here, so if it cheers you up, go for it!

Melodysmum12 · 02/11/2023 14:57

I’d be fed up of it by Xmas! I love Xmas but it’s far too early IMO. I want the excitement but I’d be over it by the end of November!

Fusterclucked · 02/11/2023 14:58

You do you

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 02/11/2023 14:59

Save it, get lights, candles, lamps etc and make it all autumnal then tree(s) in December !

ImNotARegularMumImACoolMum · 02/11/2023 15:16

I saw a Christmas Tree up in a house near me on 21st October!! Didn’t even wait for Halloween before they had theirs 😂

Nickleback · 02/11/2023 15:30

I have similar all year round, I have a few every day bits on there and then gorgeous Easter decs go on then Xmas baubles, I love it

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/11/2023 15:52

Definitely too early for a tree imo.

But it´s your house. Do whatever you want.

Badmum06 · 02/11/2023 16:08

It's never too early to do things that make you happy!
Me and my 10yo were considering swapping our halloween deccs for Xmas ones but decided against it as we want December to be extra special and don't want to 'get used' to the deccs.
We saw our first Xmas lights on someone's house yesterday and got so excited.
There's enough misery in the world, do what makes you happy/cosy xx

Maybe time to step away from mumsnet! @IncomingTraffic

i imagine in later than you all…. Second weekend of December our tree does up! And down on 28th

no judgement (or particular interest! If you do it earlier but surely putting it up now just means that the specialness of it… has well and truly dilated somewhat in 8 weeks time?!

DoktorPeppa · 02/11/2023 08:08

You'll be sick of it by Xmas and will be taking it down on boxing day, which seems a shame.

Why not just have some fairy lights for the time being?

Yes this. You will be sick of looking at it by Christmas.

EasternStandard · 02/11/2023 16:17

Too early here

Mid Dec for us

crankit · 02/11/2023 16:20

I try to hold out to 1st remember but usually cave the end of November, I do love Christmas though

aLFIESMA · 02/11/2023 16:21

I put my Christmas up in 'layers'. Starting early December Greenery(faux) with fairy lights, enjoy for a week as is then add ribbons, candles little houses etc to cosy it all up over the following week or so leaving the sparkly baubles and bits, tree and fresh greenery till a week before. Its a lovely 'build up' and also a bit easier for me to manage

marshmallowfinder · 02/11/2023 16:25

Oh come on, it's way too early. We've not even had Bonfire night yet.

Tighginn · 02/11/2023 16:32

Commercialism at it's finest. No one will say a word, but they will silently judge you forever more.

Ginmonkeyagain · 02/11/2023 16:41

You are all lunatics - Christmas decorations in November - what are you? A cash trapped local authority? Christmas is a festival that lasts from 24 December to 5 January - not a "cosy feeling".

Ours go up on the last Satuday before Christmas and down on Twelfth night.

Anything else is wrong. bangs gavel of judgyness

zingally · 02/11/2023 16:46

Do what you like!!

Mine will go up the last Sunday in November, which is the 26th this year. We always make a bit of a day of it, including going out and buying one new decoration from the nice garden centre near us.
The tree always goes away again on January 1st.
One of my neighbours often still has their tree up in February, which makes me smile.

Life is short OP, and if having a bit of festive sparkle earlier than usual is what you fancy, I say just do it.

lurchermummy · 02/11/2023 17:34

Yes!!! Put some fairy lights up if you want to add some warmth? I have some on my mantel.
