Is it too early? (Christmas Tree)

When do you put yours up?

Now the nights are drawing in I'm fancying putting a tree up to make the living room cosy with the lights and decorations.

It's too early, isn't it?!

It's my first Christmas in a new house, I didn't have room for a tree before so I'm somewhat over excited...

Can't you just wait til, like...er Christmas time? Fuck it who am I to say, just have the decorations up all year round if you want.

30 years ago I remember seeing one house - literally one house - that had their decorations up in November and thinking cor that's early. Now it's fairly common. But on the flip side the same people are taking them down before the turkey dinner has had time to digest. I'm very much in the minority taking them down on 6th Jan.

Up to to You to be Honest

What I do though is , I leave a string of soft white bulbed lights out all year along my window ledge and the top of my TV Unit
Does look lovely and cosy of an evening I must say.

I have fairy lights up all year. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Edited

Me too, at least one set that I threaded through a huge house plant (more of a mini tree) telling myself I’d take them down once the clocks changed in March.
That was two Christmases ago!

Bobbinsbop · 02/11/2023 11:05

Ours will be up earlier this year. We had an extension so it’ll be the first time we have space for a proper tree and I’m excited!

SpudleyLass · 02/11/2023 11:06

If it makes you happy OP, do it.

I did it around this time last year but grew sick of it quite quickly. I'll wait until December this time.

DappledThings · 02/11/2023 11:17

In fact when I rule the world there will be no Christmas stuff allowed anywhere until the 1st December.
I'll vote for you if that's the platform you stand on. But I would like the law to include that the full season must be respected. Shops are required to stock all Christmas things until 6 January. Easter eggs not available until at least halfway through Lent and not removed from shelves until Easter Saturday. Which is the Saturday after Easter Sunday, not the one before.

DupontsYellowDressingGown · 02/11/2023 11:40

Yes it's too early. It's not Christmas yet. By all means do some autumnal/winter decorations but not a Christmas tree at the star of November.

FFSWhatToDoNow · 02/11/2023 11:45

when I rule the world it will be like the Olympics - 4 yearly.

Elphame · 02/11/2023 11:49

Won't you be totally sick of it by the time Christmas comes?

My seasonal decorations will go up the weekend before the Winter Solstice so 17th December.

CanIPetThatDawg · 02/11/2023 11:52

I like Christmas decorations because they’re around for just a short window of time. I’d get so bored of looking at a Christmas tree in my sitting room for two whole months. Like some flamboyant house guest who had long outstayed their welcome.

TwigletAddict10 · 02/11/2023 12:03

I would previously have said no way, too early, but I can completely understand the excitement when it is a 'first' Christmas in a new house.

It will be my baby's first Christmas and I'm going to probably get the decorations out earlier than Dec this year because I'm excited and want to see his face light up when he sees the tree.

Urgh I never used to be so sentimental!

daffodilandtulip · 02/11/2023 12:13

I've just put a few cosy bits out ... a little wintery tree and a candle on the mantelpiece, a couple of bits with deer on and some glass jar candle holders with fairy lights in - just nice bits dotted around. I'm an "early" tree person, but I just like to have it ready for the 1st.

GreatGardenstuff · 02/11/2023 12:36

Your house, your choice. It’s too early for me, I’d be sick of the clutter long before Christmas.

I will however be putting up my winter lights on the tree outside this weekend.

JNW11 · 02/11/2023 13:27

Mines going up on Sunday! If I could keep
It up all year round I would, my living room looks so much better with a Christmas tree up 😂 I say go for it!

Paperbagsaremine · 02/11/2023 13:32

IME (tree up 1 Dec) the shine can go off it a bit if it goes up "too early", though "too early" is subjective!

I did notice a white twig LED tree in Homebase for £50... Was tempted... Could put up a "November decoration"...

LadyMacB · 02/11/2023 13:34

Your house, your tree, so not unreasonable. But yeah, it’s really really early.

DeadbeatYoda · 02/11/2023 13:37

How about putting some twinkly fairy lights around the house instead, then save the tree for the big event? I have them in my, sadly now unusable, fireplace in the autism and winter and we love them.

Is it too early? (Christmas Tree)
DeadbeatYoda · 02/11/2023 13:38

Autumn and winter ( I meant 😂)

TentChristmas · 02/11/2023 13:40

Do it! I’m starting this week, with teh fairy lights and candles and Christmas bed linen etc. Then more decorations and then the tree before December I won’t be sick if it by Christmas and it helps so much.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 02/11/2023 13:43

PurpleChrayne · 02/11/2023 08:45

Fairy lights will give the same effect.

Putting trees up early is sad behaviour.

Bit judgey...

Ffsmakeitstop · 02/11/2023 13:51

It is too early but saying that I have been buying a lot of new decorations because my dd is in her new flat so she has my old tree and I have bought her some new stuff too, then we are going to share the old ones to fill in gaps. We both like a mish mash of decorations.
We usually do our tree together so this year we get two to play with and I can't wait.
If I suggested doing it now DH would have a heart attack.

BusySittingDown · 02/11/2023 14:02

We're a strictly 1st December house here but DH and I are in arguments atm as I want to put mine up 25th November this year. He wants to wait till the 1st but my argument is that last year we moved on the 16th December so didn't put decs up till 17th and missed out on all those days of Christmassy gloriousness. 😂

This year I want a bit longer. I absolutely love having my tree up. And to be fair, DH doesn't even bloody do it! I do!

I'm actually surprised that I haven't seen a single tree up yet (except in the shops).

saltinesandcoffeecups · 02/11/2023 14:03

To each their own… but my personal rule is to celebrate the holiday in the month it lands.

I do think the US is a bit lucky, in that we have Thanksgiving at the end of November. It makes a nice little demarcation between holidays. You’ll get some creep here and there but for the most part it’s pumpkins and ghosts for October, leaves and Turkey in November, and Trees and Tinsel in December.

Basilton · 02/11/2023 14:20

I have my smaller Christmas tree up on the landing, it is currently a Halloween tree though and went up a couple of weeks ago. I will take off some of the Halloween stuff soon and just have it as a winter tree with for now and I will it u Christmas decorations at the end of the month when I put my main tree up.

For everyone saying it’s too early? Who says it is? Where is the rule book saying when you should put them up? If it makes you and your family happy then do it! 🎄
