£60 to replace the rear wiper!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 16:50

Car in for service today. I knew the rear wiper needed replacing. But can't get one on the high street that fits. So had no choice but to have it done during service. But £60 for one blade. Feels like daylight robbery!!!

Amazon? eBay? AliExpress?

Sorry, no sympathy if you choose to let yourself knowingly get ripped off. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Mudflaps · 01/11/2023 17:09

The rear wiper or wiper blade?

PhantomUnicorn · 01/11/2023 17:14

Why can't you get one on the high street? Do you have a weird wiper or something?

And honestly, you should be checking your wipers and getting them replaced BEFORE the service so they can't scalp you for something like that.

Blueandpinklampshades · 01/11/2023 17:15

Is it just the blade or the rear arm AND the blade? If it's the latter the alloy often fuses to the bolt and makes replacing the arm a bit of a nightmare, you have to heat it up, or use a specialist tool, or strip out the covering from the boot lid and remove it that way. Can turn a two minute job into a 30-45 minute job.

Maybe that's what accounted for the cost? Because you're right, a rear blade and simple replacement job should cost you no more than a tenner.

I had a very frustrating afternoon in Halfords a few months ago, trying to find one that fitted. Think I tried about four different ones. And not one worked!

I usually do. Certainly with the tiny ones. As I can change them myself.

*front. Not tiny

German car, I'm guessing?

Partner has a Mini that has oddball-fitment wipers you can only get from the dealer. Found out the hard way after buying from Amazon and having to return.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 01/11/2023 17:20

Try Euro Car Parts, they're usually quite good. Then look at eBay. Halfords are for amateurs.
And the £60 at a garage is perfectly reasonable, you're paying them to source the part and fit it as well, not just the part.
I mean you wouldn't pay for just the ingredients at a restaurant, would you?

Superbroom · 01/11/2023 17:21

Is it largely the cost of the blade and not labour, if you were finding it difficult to find one that fits. Have they had to order it in from main dealer, that will be expensive?

Just the blade.

On eBay just put your reg in and it tells you what you need to buy

Yep, eBay or a local motor factors, Eurocar parts or something similar but start with eBay.

penjil · 01/11/2023 17:31

What car have you got, OP?

ohme · 01/11/2023 17:33

What's the car?

I had a Mini where none of the wiper blades from Euro Car Parts, Halfords etc would fit, even when their catalogues claimed it was the right one.

I had staff out in the car park looking at it because they were as puzzled as I was.

At that point I'd have gladly paid £60 to guarantee that it was the right one.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 17:54

I tried trying to find out which blade I needed. But couldn't find the one for my particular model listed anywhere. So had to measure the existing one.

Someone ripped ours off in the 'secure' carpark. Replaced with one from Ebay for about £12.
Repair place wanted about £120, gave a quote and failed to order it so it could be done with the service, they lost out by being greedy and inefficient.

Ladyj84 · 01/11/2023 18:02

Googled the car starting from anywhere 13.99 and up

You can look online. Type ur reg in and it offers the correct blade

Loverofoxbowlakes · 01/11/2023 18:03

Halfords is shit and overpriced

I echo pp to recommend Euro Car parts, put in your car reg and it'll bring up the part you need.

RudsyFarmer · 01/11/2023 18:08

My partner has suggested you approach Hyundai directly as the dealerships are franchises and they may actually get into trouble for ripping you off.

PawsisShady · 01/11/2023 18:08

I got mine from here, you just put the car details in

Loverofoxbowlakes · 01/11/2023 18:11

This, from the euro car parts website, took a guess at the year of your car - universal wiper blade with different fixings £13.49

Expensive lesson learned for next time OP!

£60 to replace the rear wiper!
