£60 to replace the rear wiper!

Car in for service today. I knew the rear wiper needed replacing. But can't get one on the high street that fits. So had no choice but to have it done during service. But £60 for one blade. Feels like daylight robbery!!!

You can look online. Type ur reg in and it offers the correct blade

But it's not always correct as in the blade that is listed against the registration number and make/model doesn't necessarily fit the car.

Halfords, also a Hyundai, under £20 for supply and fit two years ago

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 19:26

@HundredMilesAnHour pretty sure I tried that one and it doesn't fit.

Will also be 15 or 30 minutes labour at £90 an hour or whatever. It's not just the part you're paying for.

CamperConundrum · 01/11/2023 19:31

Did they break it down into labour and parts? The light bulbs in my old car were actually cheaper to get changed at the main dealer that just buying a replacement bulb.

It was done as part of a service. If the OP has been charged £60 for the rear wiper blade are you saying it would have taken 45minutes to fit it? If so those people need some training. It’s a few minute job.

tttigress · 01/11/2023 19:58

It's frustrating and cars seem to be designed these days to rack up the serving bills. For example partner had a car where you could not change a bulb without fairly major disassembly at the service centre.

You could technically do it yourself, but I usually end up paying, and then being in a bad mood.

Halfords is shit and overpriced

I echo pp to recommend Euro Car parts, put in your car reg and it'll bring up the part you need.

I remember when I bought a bulb from Halfords and paid for their fitting service. It was only about £5 (mid 2000s), but the fitter was so rubbish, I ended up having to help and do most of the work myself!!

Boomboom22 · 01/11/2023 20:05

Yes euro car parts or ebay and most of the sellers have you put in the reg and tell you if it fits. Saves loads if you only need say a wing mirror cap not the whole thing.

PawsisShady · 01/11/2023 20:11

@RudsyFarmer depends on min lab charge
Ours is 10 mins - but labour is £155 plus VAT so it racks up!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2023 22:59

It only takes five minutes to fit a new blade, and was done as part of the service. So no extra labour costs.

So they charged you a 600+% markup on the cost of the blade?!

Try Euro Car Parts, they're usually quite good. Then look at eBay. Halfords are for amateurs.
And the £60 at a garage is perfectly reasonable, you're paying them to source the part and fit it as well, not just the part.
I mean you wouldn't pay for just the ingredients at a restaurant, would you?

Three minute job.

SleepyRich · 02/11/2023 00:33

£60!!! That's madness. Echo what others have said just goto Eurocarparts in future they'll get the correct one for you and wouldn't expect to pay more than £15.
