Do you take your phone everywhere?

I have read people astounded that others do not take their phone everywhere. I don't. If I am going out to a barwith friends I leave it at-home. No point losing it, which i would if i took it. Or if I am popping out to the local shop I leave it, I don't need it.
So do you take your phone everywhere?
YABU = yes I do
YANBU = I dont

Always with me, I’m a type one diabetic and it’s linked to my continuous glucose monitor.

HamstersAreMyLife · 31/10/2023 21:28

Yes. I used to not bother on the school run then I had an accident on the way home and had to crawl back as I couldn't call for help. It wasn't my best day 😆

PinkBuffalo · 31/10/2023 21:28

I try to as it has my medic alert card in there for emergency

it generally lives in my bag so gets carry about with me

i am extremely bad at remembering it though and have on the odd occasion manage to leave it at work where it does stay until I go back (I can definitely live without my phone! My iPad at home however is a lifeline)

Estermay · 31/10/2023 13:16

@LemonRedwood what about if you are close enough to just walk home?

That's pretty much only the pub across the road, and I'll take my phone to pay with. Not much else is walking distance around here!

DixonD · 31/10/2023 21:32

I’m with you OP. I feel so liberated when I’m without it. I would take it on a night out though, for safety. I don’t drink though so less likely to lose it!

boako · 31/10/2023 21:32

@Estermay I do normally have my phone with me, but I run a business and also have a vulnerable relative and DC who might need to be able to contact me.

However, it isn't a smart phone, so there's no risk of me starting to scroll around on it or such like. All it does is call and text, so I can't use it to pay for things. It is also very small (Alcatel One Plus) so will fit in a coat pocket.

If I had one of those silly phones which are the size of an iPad, I wouldn't take it anywhere. My phone needs to fit in my coat pocket.

monty09 · 31/10/2023 21:34

I always have my phone on me, school is a 20 minute walk each way so once I've dropped the kids off I listen to my music otherwise I'd just leave it at home.

TomAllensWhiskMic · 31/10/2023 21:36

Yes i take it with me every time I leave the house.

It has multiple purposes, not just as a phone so why wouldn't I?

I remember the days when I used to have to carry a purse with all my cards, a map, a book, a Walkman, an address book, a magazine or newspaper, a camera etc. depending on what was doing.

Now I just take my phone.

The only thing it can't do is unlock my front door!

RampantIvy · 31/10/2023 21:44

DD (23) lives on her own 100 miles away. I like to know that she can contact me at any time, so the answer is yes, unless she is at home visiting us.

lljkk · 31/10/2023 21:44

I sometimes remember to turn it on ...

echt · 31/10/2023 21:44

I didn't take it everywhere until one day, while walking the dog on the oval, a man collapsed, complete face plant. Fortunately one of the other walkers had a phone for an ambulance, was a first-aider, and lived close enough to phone for blankets from his house.

After that I take it everywhere.

titchy · 31/10/2023 21:49

My phone is way smaller than my purse and does far more - so these days the purse and handbag stay at home and the phone comes with me.

Not for use as a phone - don't think I've ever made a phone call on it. But to pay for stuff, use loyalty cards, check train times, order an Uber etc.

QuickDraining · 31/10/2023 21:53

I am an emergency responder, so alas have to take the phone with me everywhere. If I wasn't I'd happily leave it. But having said that, the one time you need it you don't have it. For many a phone offers insurance and disaster mitigation.

CharlotteBog · 31/10/2023 21:59

I don't take it with me when I run. Knowing no one can contact me for that short period of time is important to me and outweighs the risk I might need it.

DIYandEatCake · 31/10/2023 22:00

I do now. The last time I went out without it, to the local park, my dd fell off a swing and broke her arm and I had to carry her home (she was 8, and feeling faint with the pain) - with my phone I could have called dp to come and get us in the car to go to A&E. I haven’t been out without it since!

I even take it with me on a run so I can listen to Spotify. But I have calls and texts on mute so I'm not disturbed.

AdoraBell · 31/10/2023 22:02

I take my phone just about everywhere unless I forget it.

soundsys · 31/10/2023 22:03

I do take mine everywhere. Because I need it to navigate, pay for things, for child-related emergencies if they're not with me...

jippy2s · 31/10/2023 22:06

Everywhere. Usually need the thing to show me where the bar is...

keffie12 · 31/10/2023 22:06

YABU on your guidelines. However, I don't think there is a right or wrong. Whatever feels right by you.

If I accidently leave my phone at home providing, I know that's where it is, that's fine.

I have what I call a detox weekend once a year, away. There is no proper signal where we go. We are in the middle of the dales hence.

VeridicalVagabond · 31/10/2023 22:06

Aye not much point having a mobile phone if you don't take it out the house, might as well just stick to a landline.

I don't use it if I'm out with pals or shopping, but it's good to know I've got it in case anything happens, or DD needs me for anything. I don't get the superiority complex some people have about how little they use their phone. "Sometimes I remember to switch it on..." Ok? You want a prize or something?

boako · 31/10/2023 22:07

I remember the days when I used to have to carry a purse with all my cards, a map, a book, a Walkman, an address book, a magazine or newspaper, a camera etc. depending on what was doing

I still take most of these with me (apart from the Walkman - I don't feel the need to listen to music when I'm out and about, and I like listening in to other people's conversations).

RampantIvy · 31/10/2023 22:09

I think that people who don't keep their phone with them probably don't have children or other dependents nor do they need to be contactable most of the time.

Like other posters I don't carry a bag or purse around with me - just my phone.

babybrum · 31/10/2023 22:09

I take mine everywhere with me. Even room to room unless I'm tending to the kids 😳 I realise that's a bad habit though, but what's the point of a phone if you don't take it out with you? Especially as a woman

Ponderingwindow · 31/10/2023 22:10

I started keeping a cell phone with me at all times for potential medical emergencies over 25 years ago. I can’t imagine leaving the house without one.
