Do you take your phone everywhere?

I have read people astounded that others do not take their phone everywhere. I don't. If I am going out to a barwith friends I leave it at-home. No point losing it, which i would if i took it. Or if I am popping out to the local shop I leave it, I don't need it.
So do you take your phone everywhere?
YABU = yes I do
YANBU = I dont

What if your DP has an emergency, like a flat tyre? I like to know I can contact and be contacted. Like insurance - you have it just in case

If this happened he would phone the bar obviously, having found a phone box and, usefully having written down the phone number of the bar before he left home, since he presumably won't have his phone with him either.

Of course 🤦🏼‍♀️Silly me.

I think the OP just wants to feel superior.

@Catsmere I had never thought of having a back-scratching fork in my handbag. That is very impressive.

My bag is a Mulberry hobo bag, and it has had to be repaired a few times. I can't think why.

Estermay · 01/11/2023 19:26

Dp would be at home with the dcs.

And if dp has a flat tyre he will either have his phone on him, or it will be a local journey and he will just walk home and sort it there.
At no time have I said we never take phones out.
Although in 40 years of driving I have had one flat tyre.

You lucky bugger, I've managed 3 in the last five years!

Some of these replies make me laugh. I am not so anxious that I plan my life around the worst things happening.
I have never rung a bar or had a message passed on. I suggested DP would do that in response to posters saying but what if your DC were rushed to hospital at deaths door.
The truth is most of the time phones aren't needed.

I don't think these posters are particularly anxious either. They are talking about one possible use of a phone in an emergency so take it 'just in case'. I have a warning triangle in the boot of my car, not because I am anxious, but maybe one day I may break down and I will use it - not happened so far but I know it's there. There may be lots of much less dramatic but pressing reasons that you may want to communicate on your phone when out and about.

OP you have said all the times you haven't had to make an emergency call, well fingers crossed you won't ever have to, but you cannot be 100% certain that that will be the case.

OP you have obviously posted on here to make a point about phone use, but many posters have told you that they use their phones for lots of other reasons such as paying for things. So there are plenty of times when a phone is needed. Your point is pointless or not well worded.

When we used babysitters we never went out without one of use having a phone on us so he/she could get in touch if necessary.

RampantIvy · 02/11/2023 07:17

Let's just allow @Estermay and the handful of posters feel morally superior for not wanting to carry a phone with them.

They clearly don't understand that some people have vulnerable people at home or work or travel in potentially unsafe areas or use their phone in a myriad useful ways that they can't imagine (train tickets, railcards, uber travel, store cards, maps, books, mumsnet, payments, dictionary etc etc).

Zebedee55 · 02/11/2023 07:21

I take it if I'm going out, to get cabs. I don't have it on me at all times, if I'm at home. Can't see the point in taking it to the bathroom or bed with me.

Oakbeam · 02/11/2023 11:24

Ooops! Wrong thread.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 02/11/2023 11:26

Yes, I literally take it everywhere with me. It’s rarely out of my site, to be honest.

But YANBU to not do so. I feel like I’m borderline obsessive over it, like a teenager.

Apossum · 02/11/2023 11:35

I take mine everywhere when I’m out and it’s generally pretty nearby if I’m at home. I’m not an anxious person as you seem to think people must be if they consider emergency situations, I just think it’s sensible to have a means of contacting someone if needed. We live very rurally which is an added factor.
Also I like taking photos and I often use my phone to pay for things.
I’m not less present in the moment as someone who chooses not to bring their phone out with them.. I manage that by simply not looking at it unless it’s needed. Not that difficult.
Also all this talk of losing it… I’m not much of a scatterbrain, I can keep track of my few belongings while out, generally speaking!
All that being said, if you don’t want to have your phone with you, that’s entirely up to you. I can’t really see why it’s of any interest at all to anyone else! Just do what you want.

toomuchfaff · 02/11/2023 13:10

I use my phone for more than taking a call, its my wallet so I don't have to carry a card, it has apps for taxi in case I need a ride, contact for family in case I'm needed or I need them, google for looking stuff up during conversation, maps, directions, camera, gallery to show pictures of whatever am talking about, halloween or the wedding or cousins baby etc. 😅 the list goes on

Throwhandsupintheair · 02/11/2023 13:41

When I saw the OP I just assumed she lived a small and simple life. Probably in a small town with relatives living nearby and not much going on day to day. Probably wears a ‘going out top’ and bootcut jeans to go to the bar on the high street.

I think subsequent posts have aligned to my initial thinking. Nothing at all wrong with this but I can kind of see why OP think this way.

Catsmere · 02/11/2023 20:38

Oi, what’s wrong with boot-cut jeans and good tops for going out? I do that combination (and have my phone everywhere)! 😆

Estermay · 02/11/2023 21:26

I have lots going on day to day. I do have a top I wear when going out out.

I bet the pub is right next door to OP's house😂😂

Vettrianofan · 02/11/2023 21:27

No need to use a mobile phone if you are extremely local to your front door.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/11/2023 21:31

Evidently the more you use your mobile the more bitchy you get

juice92 · 02/11/2023 21:35

Yes I take my phone everywhere. If I meet up with a friend the chances are once I've got in the car, I won't even look at it again until I get home (that could be hours later), but it is always with me. Allows me to let someone know if I'm running behind, allows them to let me know if they are, gives me a way of getting in touch with my Husband and him getting in touch with me etc etc

FosterMommy13 · 04/11/2023 13:52

Mine comes everywhere with me - mainly so the teen can contact me if needed but also because I do so much with it. The ONE time I was just popping to collect a takeaway and said ‘oh I don’t need my phone’ and threw it down on the sofa and went out……I locked myself out of the house! (Teen had borrowed my house key off the car keys earlier that day and not put it back). So I was left with no way to get in the house and no phone! Luckily my best friend lives locally and was home so I went there to get my spare key but it just made me laugh that the one time I thought I would be ‘free’ and not take my phone with me, I ended up really needing it!
I do agree with the generally idea of your post though and hate how reliant we have become on them!
