Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

I’ve started to split my shopping at Sainsbury into nectar and non nectar. I use the card for the discount on the reduced products and then put the rest through as a separate non nectar linked transaction with a different debit card.

Anything to screw up their data harvest.

Petty maybe but I really don’t care

I like it! Personally I couldn't be arsed to do that. You could always take it a step further and sign up with a fake name using a specially set up email address. Then you'd get to see first hand who they sell your details to.

Rincol · 30/11/2023 20:21

@DiaNaranja . if you don't use it, then you ARE paying the inflated prices,

Exactly.

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 19:29

Why? Surely obvious. I searched and that was the cheapest that came up. I didnt know they were different sizes. Pretty obvious.

I wonder why you accused me of lying?

I didn't! Your post was inaccurate on a couple of counts. Your inaccuracies are on you.

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 20:42

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 18:01

Do not accuse me of lying. I made a mistake about the size of the baileys. No need to be so rude.

So Tesco is better value.....

You got it totally wrong?

🤣

Behindyouiam · 30/11/2023 20:48

mantyzer · 30/11/2023 18:54

It means partially lying. See the dictionary definition above. It is a middle class way of saying - you are a liar.

You were wrong!! Give over with the drama!! So Tesco club are price wins?

StillWantingADog · 30/11/2023 20:51

Sainsbury’s and boots do it too.

i’m convinced the card holders get the real price and everyone else gets scammed

I have all the cards in my apple wallet now. Is fine.

poppym12 · 30/11/2023 21:05

I noticed that Boots and Waitrose are doing this now too.

Jesus you have too much time on your hands, I'm so glad I'm not behind you!

I'm not sure how much your batshit crazy decisions make a difference!

Not a "bot" thanks, and I'm not invested at all in any particular supermarket. Like I said, from working in a field that analyses and feeds back data across all the major retailers, this is the general consensus. Whether you believe it or not, people do like to save money, and when the price goes down at the till, they feel like they've got a good saving. Which is why retailers are now choosing to roll out new service skills, where checkout assistants are being prompted to tell the customer the "before and after price" when they scan their loyalty card, along with "if you'd used your nectar/clubcard today, you could have saved £££". It's a business model, and one that seems to be working well, increasing not just profits, but overall footfall, new customers, and more frequent custom from previous shoppers. I'm just stating what the data proves. For the minority that don't like the use of loyalty cards, there are many many more who do. And yeah, I'm sure they've got "important things to think about in their lives", obviously everyone does! That doesn't mean the price of a weekly shop doesn't matter at all, because there's "more important things", for some, it is actually very important. I'm just trying to point out the science behind why loyalty cards work, and why the big brands are adopting this approach. If you don't want a loyalty card, don't have one, but then don't moan that you don't get to reap the benefits of having one. Whether or not you think it's a con, and the prices are inflated to make the loyalty card seem better than it is, is beside the point... if you don't use it, then you ARE paying the inflated prices, or potentially causing yourself hassle having to shop elsewhere. Absolutely fine, no one cares, and the shops really REALLY won't miss you.

The reason I asked if it was a bot response is because this is a chat forum not essay forum.

You should work on collating all your research / thoughts and making them succinct, taking into account the medium you are using (Mumsnet).

I thought it was interesting. Thank you @DiaNaranja.

Is that one of those 'rules' that doesn't exist anywhere except in your own personal preference - like the ones that people randomly cite about men/non-parents/people from outside the UK supposedly not being 'allowed' on MN (or at the very least, 'not really supposed to' or being 'bad eggs' for participating), in spite of the site owners' frequent confirmations to the contrary?

Most people have thumbs, Page Down buttons or mouse wheels, so - just like all the entire threads (or even topics) that you simply ignore, because they don't interest you - there is no little dictatorial imp sitting on your shoulder and forcing you to read anything you don't want to.

Personally, I would prefer a long, well-considered post from somebody who is actually engaging with the thread any day rather than the 300th pithy "Cancel the cheque!" from all the Captain Obviouses who don't bother to read any further than the thread title (if even that) before wading in with their nugget of wisdom.

Behindyouiam · 01/12/2023 15:49

I got my £10 Clubcard Christmas Baileys, don't a further £30 in the process!

I wonder if this thread was a clever marketing thread by Tesco and @mantyzer is actually on the board!

I worked out today that the Tesco Clubcard Baileys is actually cheaper than the Aldi knock off.

And they also get our data..... win win!

So they can send me offers that appeal to me like cheap alcohol!

Rincol · 01/12/2023 16:58

You want to lay off the Bailey's a bit mate.

Makes me happy.

If it's any consolation to you, I very rarely shop in Sainsbury's as the nearest branch charges the top tier prices. I generally only go in for things I can't get in Waitrose like the Marmite 10 year old version.

justteanbiscuits · 30/11/2023 13:53

So, when it's your only shop in walking distance and you no longer drive? But getting out to the shop to buy food is one of your last bits of independence? Awesome.

This. ^ Some people don't give a shit that some people are affected by this stupid shitty clubcard scam. Some people have only one particular store to go to, as they can't drive/are disabled/are elderly, and they struggle to get a storecard for various reasons. So they are being routinely ripped off. This whole storecard scam is scummy. I hope Tesco get taken to the cleaners by the investigating watchdog.

bruffin · 02/12/2023 19:48

Porridgeislife · 30/11/2023 07:55

But you’re not being penalised, bullied or controlled. It’s entirely up to you if you set foot in Tesco.

There are at least six other supermarket chains in the UK so just go to one of those. Waitrose doesn’t have two tier pricing, neither does Aldi or Lidl.

Lidl does have two tier pricing, you get discounts if you have the App, Waitrose has a loyalty card , i never shop in Aldi, i dont have one in walking distance) so no idea if they do loyalty cards or not.

You seem to have some issues and stop with the faux concern for the elderly etc. My MIL and DM had loyalty cards before they died and computers and mobiles with no issues. Im the next generation of old people, im in my 60s' all my friends are more than computer savvy enough to cope with loyalty cards or order a shop on line.

rwalker · 02/12/2023 20:14

Put your principles where your purse is and don’t use a club card to get the discount

BIossomtoes · 02/12/2023 20:17

And their customers will pay the bill so you really don’t give a shit about them. Tesco certainly won’t be out of pocket.
