Who actually benefits from changing the clocks?

Kids up at 5:30. Pretty sure that the same thing has happened in many, many houses this morning.

It's just an hour, but so disruptive to children.

Who benefits? Winds me up every year.

Someone got out of bed on the wrong side this morning.

letstrythatagain · 31/10/2023 06:38

Laughing at how grumpy the clock change has made the OP 🤣🤣🤣

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/10/2023 06:39

Love it for dog walking. We benefit.

Without farmers you'd starve!

muddyford · 31/10/2023 06:40

Southwest here. Like the north it wasn't getting light till 8.00. GMT all the way here. We don't have the summers now to enjoy long balmy evenings.

But would all farmers cease to work if we stayed on GMT. No

Every year as my dad is changing the clock in the kitchen he complains claiming that it’s only done for the benefit of schoolchildren in Scotland.

muddyford · 31/10/2023 06:42

Down here it's not latitude but distance from the meridian. We are twenty minutes behind London.

Me. Got an hour of work done that I would literally never find in my day but I was awake so did so. Felt good

orangegato · 31/10/2023 06:43

Why the fuck can’t farmers just get up an hour earlier than everyone else? Mind boggling that the whole country has to adjust.

Crossinsomekindaline · 31/10/2023 06:43

The farmers thing is a myth anyway. I wish people would stop peddling that as a reason.

Before alarm clocks and electric lights, and tractors with headlights, farmers started work with the sunrise and finished with the sunset. It made absolutely fuck all difference if their clock said 5am, 6am or 11am.

BST/GMT doesn't add any additional sunlight to the day.

Luckyduc · 31/10/2023 06:43

It's never had any effect on my child any years and he's now 8. Yiu adjust the bed time hour.
I see all these parents moan that their kid gets up at 6am....now 5am but why put them to bed so early? They need 12 hours sleep or if 8 years old between 10 and 12 hours so time their bedtime for when you want them to get up. If you want your kid to get up at 7am but them to bed 7pm. My kid always went to bed at 8pm and got up 8am. Never in my life did they get up early.

Today was awful here with 3 kids up early during half term. But I’m glad they change the clocks - we’re in Germany where school starts at 7:55, so without the change we’d be cycling to school in the dark.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 31/10/2023 06:45

North of England and Scotland benefit from it otherwise we would be getting barely any daylight.

fuckssaaaaake · 31/10/2023 06:45

This thread is funny. Some people really get angry when tired, glad I can handle early mornings though as it seems rough being you

You'd get the daylight 1 hour later in the day though

Wow, why didn't we all think of that?! Mind blown. Thanks mate. Parents of the world rejoice!

Staying on BST would kill teenagers, going to school half asleep in the dark. That is what the '60's experiment showed.

GMT all year round ? Maybe we would use more electricity though as people don't go to bed with the sun....

It doesn't change the amount of daylight in a day though!!
