Who actually benefits from changing the clocks?

Kids up at 5:30. Pretty sure that the same thing has happened in many, many houses this morning.

It's just an hour, but so disruptive to children.

Who benefits? Winds me up every year.

Scotland benefits. Kids would be waking to school in the dark otherwise.

They'll be walking home in the dark anyway. Makes no difference

It’s actually for kids. It prevents them having to walk to school in the dark. That’s obviously very risky.
My Dad was saying at the weekend, he remembers when they trialled not changing the clocks in the 60s. He said it was awful, didn’t get light til after 9am.
I don’t love the clock change but there’s a valid reason behind it.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 31/10/2023 06:24

Well the time now is actually the default time, it’s the summer time that’s “wrong” and that’s there to maximise daylight in the evenings.

This.

The October change is changing daylight back to its intended time.

It's the March change that's the adjustment, intended to shift the day so most people have a better use of daylight hours.

Didn't realise what was common?

op you said Kids up at 5:30. Pretty sure that the same thing has happened in many, many houses this morning.

devildeepbluesea · 31/10/2023 06:29

I benefit from a precious few more weeks of walking the dog in the light. Oh and the farmers quite like it too.
DD is 10 now but I can’t really remember her being affected by the clock change. This morning I woke at my normal time of 5.45….I must adapt really quickly.

Nothing to do with farmers nowadays, maybe before electric light you couldnt get an early enough start but now its just as disruptive to cows as it is dogs, kids etc

As you say it makes no difference.

I personally don't like late night summers. I sleep better when it's darker

We just have to get on with it instead of complaining all of the time

JaninaDuszejko · 31/10/2023 06:30

Try living in Scotland and realising how late it gets light in the morning. Edinburgh is west of Bristol so forcing us all to pretend we live in central Europe for 7 months of the year is ridiculous. We should be on GMT all year round.

MassageForLife · 31/10/2023 06:30

shockwaze · 31/10/2023 06:15

Good for you, well done.

Who benefits in general is my question, if you didn't even notice, what good has it done

had to be up at 4.40am. I only got home at 10.30pm.

If I hadn't had the extra hour I would have been struggling. So yeah, it did a lot of good!

So if you want it generalised (you should have been more specific) - people that are home late but need to be up early.

There. That better?

Neurodiversitydoctor · 31/10/2023 06:32

We like it, have to get up at 5:30/6am term time here, school bus is 7:30 the fewer weeks DC have to wait leave in the dark the better IMO.

Cocorico22 · 31/10/2023 06:33

😨

IcarusFlies · 31/10/2023 06:33

I’m loving it! Am going to bed very early (even by “old” time) and waking up early, around 5.45 new time. Doing my admin in bed, kids now get up happily around 6.30 instead of being dragged out of bed in a rush at almost 7.30 in a bid to maximise their rest. Sorry OP!

BitofaStramash · 31/10/2023 06:34

Scotland benefits

Without it it would be dark until mid morning

In the 60s they kept it permanently on BST which qas obviously wrong. That wouldn't happen with GMT all year round.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 31/10/2023 06:35

I think it can be summarised as small children- total pain
Secondary school age- godsend.

Mrsjayy · 31/10/2023 06:36

Not up with kids but a bloody dog <yawn> it does benefit day light I suppose but god it's a pain in the arse !

Well I hope you're not going to feed your kids today- because- farmers
No milk either- because- farmers

Good grief.

How self centred must you be to not be able to cope with a bit of disruption?

That's the World today tho, isn't it?

Porridgewithnuts · 31/10/2023 06:37

I suspect OP lives in the south and doesn’t know many farmers!!

As we've said, pretty sure it doesn't affect farmers anymore

I always assumed it was restaurants, pubs etc that benefited with people going out later of an evening and spending more money.

Anyone who struggles with dark mornings benefits. I'm in W Yorks and before the clocks went back, it wasn't light until gone 8 in the morning. In the depths of December it wouldn't be light until about half past nine on BST. I wish we were on GMT all year round.
