If this is correct for Thursday then it will be the worst storm ever to hit the UK. Gusts of 120mph possible along the south coast....

Exactly! Bit like the lack of preparedness for COVID. Looked like a car crash in slow motion to some and all the more terrifying when viewed alongside the ‘never going to happen here’ attitudes of others.

@SurprisedWithAHorse
Agreed, this thread's a bit of a storm in a teacup!

In 35 years, the weather models and supercomputers have been improved to the extent that the five day forecast now is as accurate as the 48 hour forecast was in the eighties.

Malarandras · 29/10/2023 00:13

I thought this thread would be about the police. The Met Office, if they are indeed trying to keep this quiet, have done an awful job as even my Apple weather app knows the weather will be very bad on Thursday. What a disappointing g thread this turned out to be 😔

And so is Rusty Goffe (if you had the dubious pleasure of cable TV and the trampoline weather forecast) 😃

Londonlondon4 · 29/10/2023 00:31

I don’t think they are trying to keep it quiet. There is a big storm coming through tonight and more windy weather before.

Not sure why there is not a warning as apparently they can be issued up to a week before. Makes sense for it to be issued nearer the time when the models are more accurate.

So this is an immediate issue, but my Q is why is noone talking about the now unavoidable loss of the West Antartica ice shelf and the 5m sea level rise that will follow? Noone knows how long this will take, but it's likely to happen in your lifetime.

This is climate change and there's more shit to come. 😱

We have less than y years to sort it 😬

That was covered a fair bit on the news, it's frankly all quite terrifying

There’s some stuff on Twitter too. I think it’s too early to be sure but it certainly could be very worrying

on a related note did you hear about the devastating hurricane in Acapulco a few days ago? Seems to be a near media blackout. The pictures are horrific. The storm went from hurricane force 1 to 5 in a few hours which has never ever happened before.
scary stuff and still people don’t take climate change seriously

Actually it was only a tropical storm, then turned into not only a Cat 5 but the worst storm in history for that coast. In a matter of hours. Incredible there's still so many climate deniers!

SinnerBoy · 29/10/2023 02:29

larkstar · Yesterday 23:35

As others have said, it’s far too premature to take any advance forecast that seriously.

Yes; and Windy are particularly prone to doom and gloom, which turns out to be exaggerated. I'm currently on a ship, off the East Coast, we do seabed surveys an obviously monitor the weather closely, as we tow pieces of equipment, which can be lost / damaged in bad weather.

Last week, they had 3 - 3.5 m waves of the Dutch coast, where we were then. It was about 1m.

The Met and Méteo-France are far more reliable.

Really

I was going by Met Office. Not wherever that image is from.

StillWantingADog · 29/10/2023 11:14

@junbean
thanks for correcting me. Regardless of the actual storm media outlets should be reporting this fact. It’s never happened before. The storm is awful but this fact is dreadful news.

DoraSpenlow · 29/10/2023 13:14

Issuing a warning for something that might happen next Thursday is way too early.

yesterday the forecast for where I am was showing heavy rain and thunderstorms for most of the day. My third lot of washing is currently drying outside in the sunshine.

OP, for what reason do you think the Met Office would purposefully keep bad weather to itself?

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/10/2023 13:44

They won't keep it quiet OP.

They learnt their lesson with Michael Fish.

Unfortunately it's probably already inevitable,

“It appears we may have lost control of the west Antarctic ice shelf melting over the 21st century,” said Kaitlin Naughten, an ocean modeler with the British Antarctic Survey, who is the lead author of the new study. “West Antarctic ice shelf melting is one impact of climate change that we’re probably just going to have to adapt to, and that very likely means some amount of sea level rise we cannot avoid. Coastal communities will either have to build around or be abandoned.”

Caerulea · 29/10/2023 14:15

There you go, it's officially named. Now just to wait & watch the track. I'm on the North Coast of Cornwall so...

PansyP · 29/10/2023 14:17

Theres a weather warning for Thursday but only a yellow one. Hardly a met office blackout 😆

Caerulea · 29/10/2023 14:19

@PansyP tbh it's even quite early to put a warning out, of any colour. I suspect the colour might change, especially for the south coast

Cheeesus · 29/10/2023 14:20

The weather warning is high impact but low likelihood. So they are agreeing with the original source that if it comes off it will be bad.
