If this is correct for Thursday then it will be the worst storm ever to hit the UK. Gusts of 120mph possible along the south coast....

Storms are worse because the sea is warmer

This has been known about for years - eg
How our warmer oceans are contributing to climate breakdown | Oceans | The Guardian

This year has seen record-breaking high sea temperatures

SoddingWeddings · 28/10/2023 22:41

For this in the South West, this Facebook page is WAY more reliable than anything else....

Here's their post on this about 2hrs ago.

"EARLY SWSC WEATHER ADVISORY FOR ADVERSE WEATHER.

RISK OF PERSISTENT RAIN AND GALE FORCE WINDS.

Wind advisory valid from 17:00 Wednesday 1st Nov until 04:00 Friday 3rd Nov. (STC)

Rain advisory valid from 18:00 Wednesday 1st Nov until 01:00 Thursday 2nd Nov. (STC)

Good evening,

A deepening area of low pressure is expected to push in from the southwest during Wednesday, bringing a spell of heavy rain and very strong wind risk.

The winds are the main concern due to the strength of the gusts we could see of up to 70mph and how long we keep the strong winds for. (Wednesday evening until Friday morning)

Timing is subject to change, and more detail will be released within the week ahead. I'll be releasing tomorrow morning.

Based on the latest weather models, it is very likely we could see yet another named storm along with a number of yellow weather warnings being issued by the Met Office in due course.

Please keep up to date with the page over the coming days for all the latest updates.

Disruption is very likely if this weather system keeps on track to have a direct impact on the southwest."

I hope it’s not too bad. I’m in north east wales and we were hit badly by the storm last Friday. We had flooding like our town hasn’t seen in about 25 years. Schools closures, flood damage and power cuts- it seemed to come out of nowhere. My house was ok but it was horrible to see the photos on social media of those who weren’t so lucky. Am really hoping this storm end up not so bad

I'd completely forgotten about that.😄

Perhaps the woman was OhYouBadBadKitten

Where's everyone looking at this? I've just checked North Wales and it just looks like normal bad winter weather.

EarthSight · 28/10/2023 23:02

Also OP, keeping it quiet? And the followed by those dots.....do you like conspiracy theories or something? Why would the Met Office deliberately 'keep this quiet?'🙄

That's not for Thursday though? And is showing as for rain not wind on mine.

Nanny0gg · 28/10/2023 23:07

The BBC weather app is showing VERY strong winds for Thursday in my area

Probably because it's bollocks.

Dibbydoos · 28/10/2023 23:12

So this is an immediate issue, but my Q is why is noone talking about the now unavoidable loss of the West Antartica ice shelf and the 5m sea level rise that will follow? Noone knows how long this will take, but it's likely to happen in your lifetime.

This is climate change and there's more shit to come. 😱

We have less than y years to sort it 😬

I’m so glad I booked cancellable train travel and hotel tickets for next week! Had a feeling we didn’t see the end of the storm weather.

You answered your own question there - it’s not an immediate issue so likely not on most people’s radar

MojoMoon · 28/10/2023 23:21

You know there are dozens of other weather forecasting companies out there beyond the Met Office? And lots of companies who employ in house weather forecasters?

Energy companies usually have their own meteorology teams.Big agriculture firms as well. Aviation companies etc

So the Met Office is not able to hide a large storm from the public.....there are many, many other forecasters out there!
Take your tin foil hat off

Iliedwheniwas17 · 28/10/2023 23:28

justasking111 · 28/10/2023 23:14

Really

Met office in my bit of north wales says 30mph winds for Thursday at the moment

HootyMcBoob · 28/10/2023 23:30

Chocolata82 · 28/10/2023 21:58

Eek! Live on the North Devon Coast!

Storm or no storm I'm very envious of you! North Devon is my favourite part of the country.

Abouttimemum · 28/10/2023 23:32

The met office forecast does say very strong winds possible on Thursday. They wouldn’t issue any weather warnings this early as forecasts change all the time.

Taking Babet as an example, normal autumn average weather was expected for the Midlands but ultimately the rain dropped further south than expected and hundreds of properties flooded with some unprecedented river levels.

Extreme weather will only keep happening with climate change.

larkstar · 28/10/2023 23:35

As others have said, it’s far too premature to take any advance forecast that seriously.

To wonder why the Met Office are keeping this quiet
MadeOfAllWork · 28/10/2023 23:36

If the met office or whoever warn people early and then it doesn’t happen, people will be less likely to believe them the next time.
