If this is correct for Thursday then it will be the worst storm ever to hit the UK. Gusts of 120mph possible along the south coast....

The BBC are unlikely to be talking about a storm warning this far out though. I don’t think it’s unusual for them to not be talking about a storm nearly a week before it happens. Which is an age in weather forecasting.

Iamonetoo · 28/10/2023 21:59

I follow Severe Weather on FB and they're definitely discussing it

Testina · 28/10/2023 21:59

There’s a Weather section?
I love this place!

RedToothBrush · 28/10/2023 22:00

I've seen this and am keeping an eye on this.

So far all I've seen is that some of the worst modeling is showing this - but thats the worse case scenario and at this stage its by no means certain.

But to say 'the met office are keeping this quiet' is utterly bonkers and grossly misunderstands how weather forecasts work.

Ahaa you're right and i missed it! ta Rovinonmars
..and bugger, i'm West Wales and out working all day Thurs

It seems you will start Thursday in West Wales but you might end up elsewhere. Finland?

SweetBirdsong · 28/10/2023 22:02

Wow, that looks terrifying! Shock (If it is indeed true what they are predicting.) Sadly, I think this kind of storm is going to be the norm from now on. I was saying to DH this week, when we were children/ teens/young adults, in the late 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, we never saw anything like this, or the horrific flooding we have been experiencing. (Well, very rarely anyway.)

Seems like a 21st century thing. Floods happen every year now. Would have been a once a decade thing some years ago - if that. Scary. Shock

AlphaAlpha · 28/10/2023 22:08

@Jewelspun my immediate thought was this too! I'm old enough to remember, albeit I slept through the storm! I was 14 and on a sleepover at my friends, woke up to the news and made toast on my friends gas fire. No school due to downed trees on our train line. We were 25/30 miles from Sevenoaks so it was pretty bad!

You mean i'm gonna get blown to Finland? Wink could be worse i suppose..

Riverlee · 28/10/2023 22:09

Just looked on Weather Outlook and they’re currently listing winds between 50-70. However, their predictions can change daily.

EmptyYoghurtPot · 28/10/2023 22:11

mrwalkensir · 28/10/2023 21:43

The jet stream is getting more and more random - makes it very hard to predict our weather. And if they predict the worst and it doesn't happen, they'll never hear the last of it. It's a week away!

Yes, I think there is an element of ‘the boy who cried wolf’ with these things - if they constantly say it might be bad and then it’s not, people start to take less notice when the real bad storms come along.

Riverlee · 28/10/2023 22:11

mrwalkensir · 28/10/2023 21:44

saying that as we hope to fly out next Thursday....

You’ll get there twice as quick.

BBC weather just said chances of some very stormy weather later in week..
We shall see!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 28/10/2023 22:23

No warnings for Thursday yet but looking cool, wet & windy.

Caerulea · 28/10/2023 22:26

It's too far away, in weather terms, to bother warning about. It could swing up or down yet. No point thinking about it till probably Tuesday. No weather org will hide anything, the credibility is too important & for good reason.

Look at what happened with hurricane Otis, not a single model predicted what it did. And yes - THAT'S weird how it's been ignored by the media, Acapulco has been destroyed.

Otis has been MASSIVELY under reported. Even with the stuff in Israel going on.

I think that is for tomorrow?

cakeorwine · 28/10/2023 22:31

It's not in the Daily Express yet so it can't be that scary

Caerulea · 28/10/2023 22:38

@RedToothBrush even the mass shooting (which killed fewer ppl - horrific nevertheless) got a live page on the BBC. Afaik there's still no official data what landfall was & they aren't getting the aid they need. It's wild!

Was watching in horror when it was obvious it was becoming a CAT 5, can't imagine how frightening & inescapable that would be with virtually no warning.

Finteq · 28/10/2023 22:40

Hmmm

In the North West. Its looking like it'll miss the north west?

It's just been wet here the last week.

Luckily we were OK during the last storm too.
