I’ve had 1989 TV on all day and she’s just magic 🥰

She is great. And my daughter loves her.
I would say though that most of her songs are writing collaborations. She is marketed as writing all her songs but in reality she could contribute 2 words and be listed as song writer.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 27/10/2023 20:21

We are on holiday in Boston at the moment and my DD are sitting on the bed making bracelets for the film tonight - they saw it in uk but cinema was really empty so they are super excited for a packed cinema USA experience.

I didn't see it in UK so first time for me.

Digimoor · 27/10/2023 20:04

No, she's like Ed Sheeran

Once in a generation is more like Kanye

Thank fuck for that.

MassageForLife · 27/10/2023 20:21

Jewelspun · 27/10/2023 20:20

Count yourself lucky. She's dreadful.

She's done remarkably well in that case 😂

CantFindTheBeat · 27/10/2023 20:22

Addicted2Kale · 27/10/2023 20:10

She is terribly boring. I especially can't listen to her on a bad day. It makes it worse.

She has so much variety in her music -
Folk, pop, country, ballads.

I'm so incredulous to hear 'boring' as a description!

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/10/2023 20:22

Yanbu OP! She is generations younger than me (I'm well old enough to be her Grandma) but she is incredible! I wouldn't buy a ticket to one of her concerts but 100% can see her appeal and think she is truly super talented.

HerculesMulligan · 27/10/2023 19:53

I am not enough of a Swiftie to see her live but I love those of her songs that I know - I think she's a very clever, insightful songwriter.

I agree.

BusySittingDown · 27/10/2023 20:22

She's amazing. Such a storyteller with her songs.

I'm so sad that I can't go to the Eras Tour 😢 and I hate those of you who have tickets. Only slightly joking.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 27/10/2023 20:22

Nah. I like The Last Great American Dynasty but that's the only song of hers I would seek out to listen to. Actually that one about August is pretty good too but she's hardly once in a generation, loads of people write good songs.

Huhuhuhu · 27/10/2023 20:23

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 20:17

Absolutely OP

"How'd we end up on the floor anyway
You say
Your roommate's cheap ass screw top rose, that's how
I see you every day now..."

Ah, man, the rubies that I gave up...

I'm so glad we have Kendrick Lamar on 1989 TV too. 🎤Oh wait, you got amnesia? 😂🎤

And the history of The Last Great American Dynasty....

I started a thread about the cinema concert, few posters thought I was nuts.

I like to direct people to this quiz

https://www.buzzfeed.com/taylorswiftmidnights/evermore-edition-taylor-swift-or-shakespeare

18/19!
But I read a lot of Shakespeare AND listen to a lot of Taylor. My subconscious probably knows although I didn't recognise any lines in the quiz.
DH , having done neither could not do this quiz at all 😎 But unless he sees words like 'forsooth' he thinks nothing is Shakespeare.

The entire tone of a piece isn't made by a few phrases though.

I think you either love Taylor Swift and appreciate her sing writing, or you don't understand her. I don't think there's much of an inbetween Grin

A lot of people think her music is mostly the poppy boppy songs that are released on the radio, but Folklore and Evermore are just like poetry.

There's very few singers that give me that 'punch in a gut' feeling like Taylor Swift does. I used to think it was because I related to the songs having grown up alongside them at similar ages to her, but songs like Epiphany and My Tears Ricochet are just another level of clever. I think she's brilliant.

Yup, I don’t like her because I’m simply too stupid.

I don’t want to feel like I’ve been punched in the gut. I want to listen to something I relate to; and I simply do not relate to her, nor do I like her musical style (I’m much more of a rock fan)

ApolloandDaphne · 27/10/2023 20:24

My DDs (aged 25 and 31) adore her. She really seems to speak to that generation. She is not for me but I am happy to accept others love her.

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 20:18

The thread I started, my sanity was questioned for crying at a song. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The thread I started, my sanity was questioned for crying at a song.

So sorry you had to face such philistines, @EmmaEmerald. Some people can't recognise poetry. (Marjorie? How could you NOT cry at Marjorie?)

Nowherenew · 27/10/2023 20:25

I honestly don’t get the fascination with her.

I think she’s awful!
She can’t sing, she can’t dance and her songs are rubbish.
There’s not one of her songs that I like.

I can only imagine it’s because her parents are so rich that they’ve basically paid for her success.
They knew all of the right people and how to get her famous.
A bit like Kris Jenner.

I was thinking of this the other day.
Someone like Rihanna can’t sing or dance well but a lot of the songs she brings out are really good (I assume she doesn’t write them but I don’t know).

Whereas TS is way bigger than Rihanna but she’s like any other of the thousands of women her age trying to be singers.

What is it about her you like so much?

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 20:25

Karmaisagod · 27/10/2023 20:20

"And then it was bought by me" @EmmaEmerald. Gets me every time.

So so many.

I'm sorry I missed your film thread. I was on a high for days aftetwards.

I left it because ...well you know how MN threads can be.

I often don't know what was released as a single and what wasn't. The joy of Cardigan is really the video and the piano as saviour.

But I think while some people just won't like her work, some have heard one or two, seen a good looking blonde, and made an assumption.

Mirabai · 27/10/2023 20:25

Huge admiration for her as a person - her songs are tedious though.

DogGod · 27/10/2023 20:27

She is amazing. I mainly listen to male singers but absolutely love Taylor. I’ve seen her quite a few times in concert over the years and due to see her next year!

She’s also a brilliant role model for young girls, she takes no shit and points out all the misogyny.

It’s so great that she’s putting Travis Kelce on the map. 😅

Ollifer · 27/10/2023 20:27

I think her marketing company have done a very good job. Not saying she's not talented but I've heard/seen a lot better.

peenaction · 27/10/2023 20:27

SmugglersHaunt · 27/10/2023 19:44

Sorry to be the first responder but I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of her songs

Same here.

GeorgeSpeaks · 27/10/2023 20:28

I love her

Not really....they didn't want Anti Hero to be the first release from Midnights.

in fact, I can't recall for sure but I think they might not have wanted it as a single at all.

HomeatRoseCottage · 27/10/2023 20:30

Huhuhuhu · 27/10/2023 20:19

I completely agree!
The lyrics lack a certain polish. If you look at lyrics, from, say London Grammar they're very poetic. Taylor just puts sentences to music.

I like Taylor Swift but in a catchy, distraction background music kind of way. The way I read trash romance novels they're not great literature just easy to mindlessly consume. She's a great songwriter if Stephanie Meyer is a great author.

And I admire her work ethic! She works super hard and doesn't shit on her fans (looking at you Adele).

Edited

London Grammar:

And so, you built a life on trust
Though it starts, with love and lust
And when your house, begins to rust
Oh, it's just, metal and dust

We argue, we don't fight
We argue, we don't fight

And all foundation that we made
Built to last, they disintegrate
And when your house begins to rust
Oh, it's just, metal and dust

Taylor Swift:

I look through the windows of this love
Even though we boarded them up
Chandelier's still flickering here
'Cause I can't pretend it's ok when it's not
It's death by a thousand cuts

london grammar:

I am still holding onto your waistband
Turn away and kick out the red sand
Summer is gone and now I'm bleeding
I can't tell now you're thinking of leaving

taylor:

Back when we were still changin' for the better
Wanting was enough
For me, it was enough
To live for the hope of it all
Cancel plans just in case you'd call
And say, "Meet me behind the mall"
So much for summer love and saying "us"
'Cause you weren't mine to lose
You weren't mine to lose, no

london grammar

I’m giving you a nightcall to tell you how I feel
I’m gonna drive you through the night down the hills
I’m gonna tell you something you don’t want to hear
I’m gonna show you where it’s dumped but have no fear

Taylor

The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me
And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was
The mark you saw on my collarbone, the rust that grew between telephones
The lips I used to call home, so scarlet, it was maroon

london grammar

Talk to me and watch me crumble
You will see me come undone
Faithfully I will look over
There I'll find what you've become

(What you've become)

You help me lose my mind
And you believe something I can't define

taylor

We gather stones, never knowing what they'll mean
Some to throw, some to make a diamond ring
You know I didn't want to have to haunt you
But what a ghostly scene
You wear the same jewels that I gave you
As you bury me
I didn't have it in myself to go with grace
'Cause when I'd fight, you used to tell me I was brave
And if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake?
Cursing my name, wishing I stayed
Look at how my tears ricochet

I think London Grammar are great but on a side by side comparison I don’t think you can reasonably claim lyrical genius for them and designate Taylor as mere trashy romance

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 27/10/2023 20:32

My 10 year old loves her OP. Sorry, but some of her lyrics make me cringe. The speaking part in Shake It Off for example.

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 20:32

In marketing terms, her middle aged audience is huge.

We're watching the young ones grow up, and at the cinema, being asked by teenagers about our history with the songs was really lovely.

I love London Grammar too! We are fortunate to have so much great music and lyrics to enjoy.
