I’ve had 1989 TV on all day and she’s just magic 🥰

No, she's like Ed Sheeran

Once in a generation is more like Kanye

AllegroConMoto · 27/10/2023 20:05

I think Ed Sheeran is a better songwriter (but I’d rather see Taylor Swift live)

RunningAndSinging · 27/10/2023 20:05

I took my DDs to the cinema to see her Eras Movie and was very impressed. She wasn’t really on my radar before but obviously has been around a long time, has written lots of songs I have known and liked over the years and has an amazing stamina to put on such a long and engaging show.

I quite like her, my daughter loves her but I couldn’t get tickets for less than £1200 so unfortunately we have to have lots of concerts in the kitchen

Her songs are easy to sing along to and usually have some kind of catchy hook
However I don’t rate her as an amazing songwriter no
I think the reason she appeals to so many teenage girls is because she writes like one

I mean - “sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and I’m a monster on the hill” … what?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

This is a lyric for tall girls!

taylor swift is 5 ft 9, I’m 6 feet tall. There’s a specific adolescent misery that comes with being inches taller than every other girl you know when the in thing is to be sexy baby (that’s a 30 Rock reference that Liz Lemon fans will know). Always awkward, oversized, too much, unfeminine, unable to fit in. I understand the feeling too well…!

In this house we don’t support anti-semites

I see people call her bland on mumsnet a lot and I just wonder if those using that word have ever actually listened to some of her lyrics, because it’s such an inapt descriptor!

YaWeeFurryBastard · 27/10/2023 20:09

I agree OP I think she’s great. And the people that say “I’ve never heard one of her songs” I’m pretty sure they’d recognise some if they heard them!

Addicted2Kale · 27/10/2023 20:10

She is terribly boring. I especially can't listen to her on a bad day. It makes it worse.

blackbirdsinginginthenight · 27/10/2023 20:10

I think you either love Taylor Swift and appreciate her sing writing, or you don't understand her. I don't think there's much of an inbetween Grin

A lot of people think her music is mostly the poppy boppy songs that are released on the radio, but Folklore and Evermore are just like poetry.

There's very few singers that give me that 'punch in a gut' feeling like Taylor Swift does. I used to think it was because I related to the songs having grown up alongside them at similar ages to her, but songs like Epiphany and My Tears Ricochet are just another level of clever. I think she's brilliant.

NormaLouiseBates · 27/10/2023 20:10

I agree with you OP for what it's worth. I think she's amazing.

I wouldn't go and see Kanye West if he was performing at the bottom of my garden.

PlusOneTwoThree · 27/10/2023 20:14

But the way she words things sometimes just sounds so … juvenile!

Like in cardigan - one of my favourite songs of hers, the line: “and when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone’s bed, you put me on and said I was your favourite” similarly to the sexy baby line; I totally get the feeling she’s trying to illustrate, I just think it’s a very ‘12 year old’ way to phrase it

Same with most of her songs really - which is why I think she appeals to many 12 year olds

Nothing wrong with her appealing to a certain demographic on purpose of course - I just don’t think it makes her a ‘once in a generation’ kind of talent

DewinDwl · 27/10/2023 20:14

Interesting lyrics but I find her songs very dull from the music / tune point of view. It all seems to have a range of about three notes, and her voice is forgettable. Not for me but I accept she is highly respected and hugely popular. I also think she is a positive role model for young girls.

taylorswift1989 · 27/10/2023 20:15

YANBU! She's awesome. So incredibly talented.

People dismiss her because she makes pop music and because she's a young woman. But her songs are consistently brilliant and her lyrics are incredible. Not to mention her business acumen. And her record-breaking tour. And taking on the people who sold her masters.

She's brilliant.

taylorswift1989 · 27/10/2023 20:16

Haven't heard 1989 TV yet... I love 1989 so I'm hoping the re-records are as close to the originals as possible.

PinkBuffalo · 27/10/2023 20:16

I agree OP I generally love her songs and sing along all the time

chipsahoy1 · 27/10/2023 20:16

Yes I agree. I don’t necessarily love her but you only have to see the effect of her music. Look at the sales of her records. Look at her concerts in the US so far.

dspite filling out stadiums thousands of people were standing outside singing along. The local areas of the stadiums were reporting huge boosts in things like hotels and restaurants.

you can not like someone’s music but still see that they’ve very very influential

Karmaisagod · 27/10/2023 20:16

I agree 100%, OP! I can't wait to see her next summer either. Went to the Eras film two weeks ago and it was a joy. Boy are we all in for a treat.

Many of her lyrics give me goosebumps and move me to tears again and again; they are so perceptive, accurate, wise, witty... I think she's no less than a lyrical genius.

MassageForLife · 27/10/2023 20:17

If people haven't heard her music, then they can't ever go into a shop! People might not know that they've heard her, but I would be very surprised if they actually haven't...

It's not my favourite kind of music, so I wouldn't say I'm a fan - but I think she has a lot about her - she's amazing with her fans, she's a very astute business woman, and clearly she is very talented. She's faced so much - she was only 19 I think, when Kanye disrupted the award ceremony. She has had more negative press stories than probably anyone else of her generation other than the royal family - yet she has created an incredible career despite all that.

I think she's quite remarkable, personally - in a good way.

Absolutely OP

"How'd we end up on the floor anyway
You say
Your roommate's cheap ass screw top rose, that's how
I see you every day now..."

Ah, man, the rubies that I gave up...

I'm so glad we have Kendrick Lamar on 1989 TV too. 🎤Oh wait, you got amnesia? 😂🎤

And the history of The Last Great American Dynasty....

I started a thread about the cinema concert, few posters thought I was nuts.

Definitelynotem · 27/10/2023 20:17

I agree OP. Few pop stars have her lyrical abilities and songwriting skills, and the fact that she writes her own music is often overlooked. Fair enough if you don’t like the music, but you can’t deny she’s talented.

I completely agree!
The lyrics lack a certain polish. If you look at lyrics, from, say London Grammar they're very poetic. Taylor just puts sentences to music.

I like Taylor Swift but in a catchy, distraction background music kind of way. The way I read trash romance novels they're not great literature just easy to mindlessly consume. She's a great songwriter if Stephanie Meyer is a great author.

And I admire her work ethic! She works super hard and doesn't shit on her fans (looking at you Adele).

CantFindTheBeat · 27/10/2023 20:20

I think she's amazing, OP.

She's super talented, driven, massively intelligent, a brilliant business woman, fantastic role model.

I think she is probably the female songwriter of her generation, yes.

Ed Sheeran is who I would put, talent wise, as her male solo artist equivalent.

(I'm 57 and love seeing talented people of all ages).

Karmaisagod · 27/10/2023 20:20

"And then it was bought by me" @EmmaEmerald. Gets me every time.

So so many.

I'm sorry I missed your film thread. I was on a high for days aftetwards.

Sorry to be the first responder but I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of her songs

Count yourself lucky. She's dreadful.
