Toddler Halloween outfit not scary enough?

83 replies

halloweenoutfit · 27/10/2023 18:57

OK so my title is ridiculous, as I've just realised reading it back to myself 😂 And also, first world problems, and all that...

However ... I've ordered a Halloween outfit for my 2.5 year old DD for a nursery party (and to take her trick or treating on the evening), but now I'm thinking it's more "cute" than "scary" and I'm not really getting Halloween vibes? Thinking I should have ordered her a devil or witch outfit instead, or something?

Or does this pass as a Halloween outfit? I can't enable voting as I'm on the app, but can people just say whether they think this outfit qualifies as "Halloween" enough for a toddler? Thank you!

I think Halloween doesn’t have to be scary just creative
one year my then 13 yr old went as Rick Astley! 😂

hiddeneverythin · 27/10/2023 22:48

You're massively overthinking

Fridaysgirl17 · 28/10/2023 06:53

They will both wear them again during the year as they like dress up so it's great, my 6 year old wore it into school yesterday for dress up & he loved it (we're in Ireland so mid term is just starting)

duchiebun · 28/10/2023 07:19

Halloween outfits don’t need to be scary. Cats are associated with Halloween.
Some outfits are inappropriate for Halloween particularly toddlers.

LlynTegid · 28/10/2023 07:23

I think it is a good choice. I'd prefer no-one to celebrate Halloween, though if you do, looks good.

CoodleMoodle · 28/10/2023 07:30

When my DD was 2 she wanted to be a carrot for Halloween (thanks Peppa Pig)! DM and I dutifully made her a carrot costume out of an old curtain and some orange leggings. She loved it, but we didn't even leave the house on Halloween that year so nobody but us actually saw it... It definitely wasn't scary but it was very cute.

A few years later DS squeezed into it for World Book Day at preschool. And I do mean squeezed. But at least people finally saw our efforts Grin

That is an adorable costume, OP. DD is now 9 and would be disappointed it doesn't come in her size!

Yoyoban · 28/10/2023 07:31

I don't think it needs to be scary but for trick or treating imo it should be a costume, which that isn't - it's just a dress with a picture of a cat on it.

To make it into more of a costume I'd paint whiskers and a black nose on her face and fashion a tail to pin on her.

It's fine for a nursery party though

@halloweenoutfit My toddler will be dressed as a duck, because ducks are his favourite animal and he looks super cute as he runs along quacking. I don't think toddlers costumes need to be scary or pigeonholed into the typical genres of Halloween.

TheKeatingFive · 28/10/2023 07:34

In the nicest possible way, you need a hobby if you have the headspace to worry about this. 😂

Its fine

IncomingTraffic · 28/10/2023 07:34

You think anyone actually cares what the kids that turn up on their doorsteps are actually wearing? Especially a toddler?

it’s 31st October. They’ve usually got coats on anyway.

Sceptre86 · 28/10/2023 07:40

My 2 year old has a similar costume. My 7 year old saw it and asked why she couldn't have had cat costume instead of the zombie prom queen one she has. No one would expect the toddler to look scary it's age appropriate.

TheBirdintheCave · 28/10/2023 07:57

WonderingWanda · 27/10/2023 19:09

It's perfect. I think toddlers should look a bit cute, they are far too sweet and innocent to be dressed as zombies

😂😂 Mine is at least 80% goblin.

WonderingWanda · 28/10/2023 07:58

@TheBirdintheCave 🤣

Yes I shall be painting whiskers on her face 😄

@NeverDropYourMooncup

Yes - little devil m, etc! This is what I meant by "more scary". I did acknowledge my title was ridiculous as I wasn't sure how to say what I was trying to say 😂 what I meant was more traditional Halloween, such as this:

I didn't mean should I dress my 2 year old as a dead zombie bride or something. Just more traditionally "Halloween", iyswim.

She won't be wearing a coat at her all day nursery party.

I wish I had the time for a hobby 😂😂

I don’t like the first world problems crew usually but surely this is the epitome? Also the devil or whatever outfits you’re posting are just weird for a toddler. Do people seriously give toddler “Halloween outfits” this amount of headspace.

junbean · 28/10/2023 08:20

Costumes can be literally anything. I would say cats are the most common theme so you're good. My toddler will be a cat too! I'm going to paint a little nose and whiskers on her face with liquid eyeliner. You could do something like that to elevate the costume a bit.

halloweenoutfit · 28/10/2023 08:23

@junbean
Yes, I plan to do whiskers! Although I have no idea if she will stay still long enough and/or whether she will wipe them off immediately 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

TeenDivided · 28/10/2023 08:27

I'd much rather see a toddler dressed like that than something from an 18 horror film. In fact I don't want to see any child in something from an 18 film.

Tumbleweed101 · 28/10/2023 08:29

I work in a nursery most costumes are cute and not scary at 2yr. A lot just have Halloween tee-shirts too as they don’t all like costumes at that age. The preschoolers are the ones that dress up a bit more.

I have to remember to tone it down when I dress up for work as I have much older children who like proper scary!

Blessedbethefruitz · 28/10/2023 08:31

I got an anna (frozen) dress this year for reusability. She loves frozen.... I was going to recycle older ds beetlejuice and skeleton onesies but she's so much smaller than he was at 20 months that they just fall off! We did see a tempting pennywise outfit but I hate single use, and nursery would have changed her upon arrival anyway 🤣
