Help! Stuck in Jordan and TA cancelled flight

Belleoftheball83 · 27/10/2023 12:10

Hi all. Posting for traffic in case anyone can help urgently.

I'm in Jordan due to fly home tomorrow with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. They've changed the first leg due to "operational reasons" and the only other flight that will get me home the same day only has business class seats. So for two of us they're trying to charge us £900!

Its Friday holidays today so Turkish Airlines call centre is all closed and trying to phone UK connects me back to the local centre. No luck on live chat yet either.

Does anyone know if I pay the extra can I get it refunded?? The flights have already cost us over £2k for economy!

Thanks!

You're just going to have to pay it and worry about that when you get home. Otherwise you're stuck

Rhumba · 27/10/2023 12:13

Have you called your travel insurer?

Agree with this! If you find you can't claim it, will you not pay it and stay?

Understand its stressful and a lot of money, but if you're not willing to stay then pay it and dispute later

mummyh2016 · 27/10/2023 12:27

OP you haven't said where you're flying to but there's a flight from Amman to Luton direct tomorrow for £105 each. I'd get them booked and sort out getting your money back when you're home from Turkish Airlines.

Belleoftheball83 · 27/10/2023 13:03

Thanks all. Flying to Manchester - flights on skyscanner are showing up at £460ish which is the same pp as the TA upgrade. Just worried I won't get my money back if we tskr the TA flights for simplicity as they'll think we've benefitted from upgrading!

Can you get someone in the UK to phone TA?

Jk987 · 27/10/2023 13:29

I'd pay the £900 by hook or by crook and get back quickly and safely.

I'd worry about everything else when you're back home.

Tartareistasty · 27/10/2023 13:39

Easyjet flyes sometimes Aqaba Man direct, it would cost about 50 to fly from amman to aqaba if I remember correctly.

Others are right, speak to your insurer. Pretty shite of TA!

justasking111 · 27/10/2023 13:42

Just get home. Things are brewing in the middle east. Argue it when you get back

katscamel · 27/10/2023 13:43

I'm pretty sure that if they've cancelled your flight they need to get you on the next available one and put you up overnight.
Do you have to get back when you were supposed to?
If you can't get through to the local office, see if there's a number for the airport office.
TA are usually pretty good so should sort it for you.

Tartareistasty · 27/10/2023 13:43

Jordan is still safe just so you don't extra worry

EU 261 regs do not apply if flying with a non EU carrier and the journey origin is outside of the EU.
I would be very surprised if TK will refund the additional fee.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/10/2023 15:14

I’d get the business class seats and worry about it later.

katscamel · 27/10/2023 15:19

@mummyh2016 Nothing to do with EU regs, living overseas we're very rarely on flights to/from EU and they've sorted things out for us when flights have been cancelled/ connections missed etc (as do many International Airlines).
@Belleoftheball83 have you managed to get hold of anyone via chat / phone?

Lastchancechica · 27/10/2023 15:23

Are other flights going to London or anywhere in the U.K.? And travel from there?

UndercoverCop · 27/10/2023 15:25

I'd get the £105 flights to Luton then get the train back to Manchester

pinkspeakers · 27/10/2023 15:26

How urgent is it that you get back? I'd probably just wait until tomorrow and ring then or just go to the airport. There's bound to be a flight back to UK, though possibly not to Manchester. I suspect you won't be entitled to the business class flight, but if TA cannot offer you a flight home in time then probably your insurer would pay for another flight?

tbh I'm staggered at how much you have paid for your flights!!! We paid £55 return to Jordan with Wizzair in spring (sorry, not helpful). Admittedly that was obscenely cheap, but £2k?!??!?

HeavenKnowsIamMiserableNow · 27/10/2023 15:27

Really

You are in the middle of a powder keg and you are cavilling over money, get out of there whilst you still can.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/10/2023 15:34

Just get the flights booked and hope your travel agents or TA reimburse later.

you do not want to get stuck there.

GrumpyPanda · 27/10/2023 15:39

Call TA in the UK or Turkey using Skype or Zoom instead of the local office. Hell, call one of their US offices if necessary. I agree with pp that they are obliged to rebook you on the business class flight if it's the only connection.

Also, go and post on the TA forum on flyertalk.com - the airline may even have a lurker on there, Lufthansa does.

TheSweetEndOfTheLollipop · 27/10/2023 15:47

If you're in Amman then you are about 50km from the West Bank.
I would just leave.
The days of the Foreign Office doing everything they can to get British Nationals out of places are long gone.

Foodorder · 27/10/2023 15:49

People are talking like you need to get out in a panic, but presumably this is your scheduled return from a planned trip. AFAIK there's no urgent need to leave Jordan?

That said, personally I'd book what works best for me and argue it with the airline/insurer later. If you can speak to your insurers do that, they'll know the rules re reimbursement that would avoid you claiming through them.

Catsanfan · 27/10/2023 15:52

Me too

If people go on jolly’s to places that are known for being a bit dodgy (remember Afghanistan?!) then that’s a them problem.

Would you be happy with the Government wasting tax payers money to get these people home? Probably not. You’d rather the money was spent elsewhere.

OP made a decision to go to somewhere dangerous at this point in time and is quibbling about a small bit of money. She needs to suck it up and pay.

There is no travel advice against going to Jordan currently, except areas less than 3 miles from the border.
