Help! Stuck in Jordan and TA cancelled flight

Hi all. Posting for traffic in case anyone can help urgently.

I'm in Jordan due to fly home tomorrow with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. They've changed the first leg due to "operational reasons" and the only other flight that will get me home the same day only has business class seats. So for two of us they're trying to charge us £900!

Its Friday holidays today so Turkish Airlines call centre is all closed and trying to phone UK connects me back to the local centre. No luck on live chat yet either.

Does anyone know if I pay the extra can I get it refunded?? The flights have already cost us over £2k for economy!

Thanks!

So? Do people just go ‘oh that country is green bet it’s all fine,’ and book a holiday without researching? If they do, they’re a muppet.

Just because a country is ‘green’ doesn’t mean it’s safe. It means it’s safer than those that are ‘red’ or ‘amber.’

Jordan has a high terrorism threat risk. Lots of spontaneous protests. A heightened anti-west sentiment. Border Crossing closures randomly - all that is in the detail of the travel advice. Still think ‘green’ means safe?

It’s a RAG rating and it’s done based on risk - green has never meant ‘it’s safe’ it just means ‘it’s not as dodgy as all these other places.’

London has a high terrorist threat as well, you are just as safe in Jordan.

op, there should be an emergency number on your travel insurance docs so I’d advise calling them to see what you are covered for.

@Foodorder great so now people can't go away without a massive contingency?

Sorry but that's ridiculous.

That's not what I said, but yes I wouldn't go away without knowing I had enough to cope if things go wrong and that would be more depending on the level of risk/region.

But you make your choices.

The FCO guidance is supposed to be meaningful, yes. If a place is shown as green when I go I absolutely would expect assistance to be repatriated if the situation changed.

How do you know the op did no research? I research where I go abroad - including reading all the FCO guidance - and make a decision accordingly. Doesn’t guarantee nothing will go wrong. And if it does, that may or may not relate to something the FCO have highlighted.

Thank you so much everyone for all the help! Mumsnet is a godsend. After a very long wait (and several failed attempts to pay for the upgraded seats) livechat confirmed it is a fault on their online system and all is well! Until we try to check in at least... thanks again!

Great! Good luck!

Belleoftheball83 · 27/10/2023 18:18

And to those who were asking, it was our scheduled return flight. Jordan has been amazing and everyone (including police) have been nothing but welcoming. Would recommend anyone to come in future if you get the opportunity - just not with Turkish Airlines!

@mummyh2016 Nothing to do with EU regs, living overseas we're very rarely on flights to/from EU and they've sorted things out for us when flights have been cancelled/ connections missed etc (as do many International Airlines).
@Belleoftheball83 have you managed to get hold of anyone via chat / phone?

It has everything to do with the regs. You've been lucky - there is no legal responsibility for airlines to put you on more expensive flights and put you up in hotels on routes that the regs don't apply to. TK if they wanted can refund the OP X for the original booked flight and then charge them 3X for the new flight. Shoddy business practice but nothing stopping them doing it.

I'd pay that to get home safely especially as things not stable in the surrounding area and worry about getting the money back via travel insurance later...keep receipts and evidence
