Electric vehicle parking spaces

Is it reasonable to park a non EV in an EV parking space?

the ones near me have quite a lot of extra space around them as they were previously disabled and parent and child parking. And are much more convenient than where the disabled and parent/child spaces have been relocated to.

are these spaces protected as per disability spaces? Or are they viewed as more of a courtesy as per parent/child spaces?

YABU - EV spaces should be for EV’s only
YANBU - EV spaces are a courtesy like P&C spaces and it’s just unfortunate if an EV is unable to use the space.

I often use them but never if it's the last one

bestofme · 25/10/2023 20:41

Huh? Surely they are charging bays not parking spaces for electric vehicles. I'd be royally pissed if I needed to charge an electric car and couldn't because a non electric car was parked there.

Londiniumrocks · 25/10/2023 20:41

In our city you’ll get a ticket for that game

NotSuchASmugMarried · 25/10/2023 20:43

@bestofme what if there was an electric car parked there but it wasn't being charged?

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 25/10/2023 20:44

No idea, but I think it's disgusting that they've moved the disabled spots so EVs can park/charge there.

RedRiverShore4 · 25/10/2023 20:45

They are supposed to be for charging so an electric car shouldn't plonk itself there any more than an ICE car if it wasn't charging.

Is it acceptable to park up by a petrol pump when you are refuelling and go off and shop?

There's your answer.

splothersdog · 25/10/2023 20:49

Should have said 'aren't refuelling'

youdonotneedanewphone · 25/10/2023 20:50

You mean a charging station?

CanIExtend · 25/10/2023 20:51

These spaces are part of the car park at the shopping/leisure center

would people with EVs be expected to move their car to a regular space once charging was complete even if they were still shopping for a few hours?

In a supermarket with anpr you may get fined. Our local Lidl carpark automatically issues penalies for parking on EV spaces and parking in disabled / parent & child without a visible disabled badge.

But fuel pumps aren’t usually found next to parking spaces.

Having recently acquired an EV, I’ve learnt that finding an available EV charging space is a pain in the arse.

if I discovered a car that wasn’t charging in a precious space, I’d be very pissed.

Most cars take a while to charge - up to 3-6 hours depending on the type of battrey and the charger.

stemmedroses · 25/10/2023 20:54

They're not parking spaces any more than the ground beside the fuel pump is, they are charging spaces. If you're not charging your car, you don't use them.

Heatherbell1978 · 25/10/2023 20:54

Eh no - I'm an EV driver and if I needed to charge and found a non EV in a space with a charging device I could be using, I'd be pretty pissed. In fact we stayed in a hotel last year where the EV spaces were at a premium and a non EV car parked there had been decorated with all sorts of rubbish. Grin

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 25/10/2023 20:55

Yes, absolutely you are expected to move when not actively charging. But many retail
park chargers are slow anyway, so in likelihood it won’t be finished charging by the time you are anyway.

youdonotneedanewphone · 25/10/2023 20:55

@WingBingo that is exactly one of the reasons I am hesitating 😟

But as people who complain about people using a parent and child spaces are often told - it was your choice to buy an EV have children and that’s the risk that you take

Stopandlook · 25/10/2023 20:58

They are charging bays - not parking spaces. I wouldn’t park my EV there unless I was charging - totally selfish. Lack of charging capacity is one of the reasons people are put off going electric, is this a genuine question?!

Pix56 · 25/10/2023 20:58

I do in a supermarket if the parent and child spaces are full. When supermarkets start enforcing the p&c spaces, maybe I'll stop using the ev bays.

Heatherbell1978 · 25/10/2023 20:58

CanIExtend you know these aren't parking spaces though, they're charging stations? I have an EV and I wouldn't park in one unless I actually needed to charge the car. So your logic is completely ridiculous.

Of course. So that someone else with an EV can charge theirs.

And once again for the people in the back, they are for CHARGING, NOT PARKING. Wow.
