What is this new form of slobdom?

Staying at a seaside resort in the UK. Large Hotel has a massive open atrium that is overlooked by hotel rooms and anyone walking along the promenade. The hotel restaurant is located smack bang in the middle of the atrium and is open to the reception area. I come down to breakfast this morning and a significant number of guests are sat in their pyjamas having their breakfast! Different families, all scattered around the restaurant or queuing at the breakfast buffet in their nightwear and fluffy slippers. This is the first time that I have come across this. Is it a relatively recent phenomenon?

Eww that would put me off my meusli. Morning breath and fanny wafts.

Bloody hell PP, did you have to?!

PhantomUnicorn · 23/10/2023 22:20

shrugs i dont give a stuff, every time i've stopped in a hotel with my bf we've usually been out exploring until 4/5am some mornings, stripped, got a couple of hours kip, thrown the clothes from the day before back on, gone to eat, then gone right back to bed for a few hours.

hotel breakfast times are unsociable.

I'm also not in the habit of getting close enough to anyone else to stand there sniffing them, or care enough to judge what anyone else is wearing, its breakfast, not a fashion show. You'll see more of their body poolside than in pjs.

madeinmanc · 23/10/2023 22:21

Interesting how society has changed isn't it? In the late 80s or 90s people would have been flabbergasted to see that and yet look where we are now.

TLDRfuckers · 23/10/2023 22:22

@Revenants do you work for Viz?

PhantomUnicorn · 23/10/2023 22:22

go another hundred years and people would have had vapours at you not wearing a dress and full corsets in a hotel.

Times change.

Theokaycokey · 23/10/2023 22:22

@samupnorth

It used to be Jury's but was taken over. I've stayed in one of the chains other hotels in London (which is more upmarket/luxurious than this one). And there were definitely no pyjamas in the restaurant there. I just assumed that this one would be similar, but I did get a good deal on the room this time round, so think that the prices have attracted a more relaxed clientele. I'm obviously too uptight. Maybe I need to get out into the sea air for a bit longer and let loose.

To the PP who mentioned fluffy slippers there is a trend for sliders with fake fur on them that look like slippers but are apparently shoes.

Yes, I am seeing them a lot. The blokes seem to wear them with pulled up white socks.

Belindabelle · 23/10/2023 22:23

I witnessed this recently at Gleneagles. Rich people wafting about
at breakfast in hotel dressing gown and slippers. I didn’t know if I should be disgusted or jealous.

ViaRia01 · 23/10/2023 22:24

Hope they’re wearing pants

Maireas · 23/10/2023 22:24

It's not about seeing their body, it's them wearing nightwear in a public place.
There are dress codes for funerals, weddings, interviews, - no-one wears beach wear or pjs for those events, we all know that. It's respectful to others to at least acknowledge that eating in public is not done in nightwear.

LakeTiticaca · 23/10/2023 22:24

Not seen this in hotels but having worked in a large supermarket there would always be women (never men I must add) that would be shopping at all times of day in pj's, dressing gowns and slippers
Gross 😝

Ejismyf · 23/10/2023 22:25

I was in the pharmacy in Morrisons today at 5.30 pm and a woman walked in in the scabbiest pyjama bottoms and dressing gown to pick up a prescription. She didn't seem to be having difficulty walking or throwing herself on the seat when it wasn't ready yet and seemed alright and had her car keys in her hand. Just don't understand why someone who can drive in, can't throw on some clothes quickly instead of walking round a supermarket in manky looking pyjamas.

I used to go to the breakfast buffet in the clothes I wore the day before. Still had morning breath and "fanny wafts".
The people properly clothed are not necessarily clean.

This is true - but I don’t have to think about it quite so closely/would never know for sure.

I don’t want someone else’s bumjuices on the bacon tongs, especially if I’ve splashed out on a premium double with bathrobe and complementary welcome drink.

Unfortunately. I think a full length dress would be nice for a hotel breakfast.

This is much more disgusting than someone in some pyjamas 🙄

Well, I don't think anyone is using their "sleep scabbed" arse to use the bacon tongs. If they did, they should be in a circus, not a hotel!

I'm just curious...has anyone encountered this in the office yet, or is that going to be the next big thing?

Hmm, I couldn't possibly say, but yes!

It's the Leonardo 😉

MN is so touchy about PJs 🤣

Mad, isn't it? Half the people wear nothing but PJs - favouring the removal of PJs, a thorough invigorating shower, followed by the donning of a second freshly laundered pair of PJs; whilst the other are open-jawed at the very thought of people who are on a leisure break not wanting to get properly dressed for the day before having breakfast.

I get the point if people are wearing very insubstantial nightwear in public, but if it's a traditional set of jacket-and-trousers PJs, is that really so different from a tracksuit in terms of 'dressing up'?

I must be so weird, as (although I personally do dress in normal day clothes beforehand), when I go down to an inclusive hotel breakfast, my focus is solely on the food and getting my money's worth and I barely notice anybody else (not in my family) there at all.

Clarabe1 · 23/10/2023 22:29

I just think lazy slob when I see someone who can’t be arsed to get dressed in any public setting. They must have zero respect for themselves and others. How hard is it to have a wash, brush teeth and get clothes on? Bloody idle and a lack of common decency.

junbean · 23/10/2023 22:30

It's a pandemic thing, for some reason extreme casual has been fully embraced ever since. I'm all for comfort but to call it a style for going out is too much. It doesn't affect anything really, I mean how could it hurt anything? I just don't like it.

AInightingale · 23/10/2023 22:30

We've had this in parts of Belfast for years, is it a new thing in GB? Young women walking about the streets in pyjamas/dressing gowns all day long. Some schools banned mothers from wearing pyjamas to do drop-offs. I think the supermarkets barred entry too. It is quite scuzzy unless you are showering and putting on clean pjs to spend the day in. It would feel quite weird to me, like an anxiety dream. Personally I only go out in nightwear if I'm putting the bins out in the dark, and some bastard always seems to drive down the street at that moment with full beams on.
