Staying at a seaside resort in the UK. Large Hotel has a massive open atrium that is overlooked by hotel rooms and anyone walking along the promenade. The hotel restaurant is located smack bang in the middle of the atrium and is open to the reception area. I come down to breakfast this morning and a significant number of guests are sat in their pyjamas having their breakfast! Different families, all scattered around the restaurant or queuing at the breakfast buffet in their nightwear and fluffy slippers. This is the first time that I have come across this. Is it a relatively recent phenomenon?

There's a growing shameless underclass who think shit like that is OK when it's not its just grim as

This is the one. I find it pretty disgusting, if I'm honest.

I wouldn't personally but can't see why it bothers you so much.

You do you and let others do what they want. Unless they're uncovered pj's are no different to most clothes.

People sweat more at night, then there are the other leakages. Have you never seen the Malcolm in the Middle song about guffing when you crash out?

Peachonthebeach · 23/10/2023 22:01

I don’t really mind normal pjs as in the long trousers / t shirt type, but I stayed at the premier inn in Blackpool (so not the ritz 🤣) in the height of summer and lots of ladies breakfasting in those frilly wafty pj shorts that are frilled and loose at the bottom and bare half an arse 🙈. With fluffy sliders, obvs.

MrsHughesPinny · 23/10/2023 22:01

This is awful. It’s like no one has any pride anymore.

Feels like there are a couple of misogynist sockpuppets talking to each other on this thread. Lads, talking about fanny wafts and clam jousting pretty much guarantees you're not getting any. Ever.

Blackcatballoon · 23/10/2023 22:04

It's a bit lazy. It takes 10 minutes to shower and put on some clothes.

Octopus45 · 23/10/2023 22:04

I once took my boys to Tesco wearing their PJs'. I had to do a merchandising job, they were too young to leave home alone and they refused to get dressed so I called their bluff and it back fired.

QueSyrahSyrah · 23/10/2023 22:05

In fairness @XenoBitch at least if you've put yesterday's jeans on then the buffet / public seating is much better shielded from your sleep encrusted flaps than in the style of pyjamas people were wearing in our hotel this summer (as illustrated below, that is in fact the exact set one of the ladies was wearing. Many thanks Google images).

I mean, it says 'sleep' and not 'public hotel breakfast'...

RosesAndHellebores · 23/10/2023 22:08
  • naked and queuing *** washed, dressed and a menu
viques · 23/10/2023 22:09

If you want to eat breakfast in your jammies you use room service.

BrimfulOfMash · 23/10/2023 22:09

If I ran a hotel I would say no nightwear in public areas, and everyone to wear tops indoors and in outdoor restaurants.

It’s just good manners not to subject others to private bed wear or your naked flesh.

Theokaycokey · 23/10/2023 22:12

Honestly, the hygiene issue didn't really occur to me. I agree that a lot of guests get dressed hurriedly and then return to their rooms for a shower or to use the pool. It was the semi opaque jigglyness that caught my attention. And the horror of it. Being caught in my nightwear in public is one of my literal nightmares. I find it fascinating how I would be utterly mortified to be caught out like that, yet others are seemingly not remotely embarrassed. In some respects I admire their high shame thresholds.

This is why I love loungewear!! Feel like jim jams, look like clothes. Shower, top knot (I'm northern so defo Uggs and big coat) and off I go...
Couldn't imagine doing this in a hotel though...

Humbugg · 23/10/2023 22:15

Saw this at a hotel in the US. Have never seen it here in U.K. it’s godawful

Love that hotel, if it is Jurys Inn. Does attract interesting people though !

KingsleyBorder · 23/10/2023 22:16

To the PP who mentioned fluffy slippers there is a trend for sliders with fake fur on them that look like slippers but are apparently shoes.

Viviennemary · 23/10/2023 22:18

I can't see what the fuss is about. If they are clean and decently covered.

GreenAppleCrumble · 23/10/2023 22:19

It’s about social norms/standards not cleanliness 🙄All those people fainting away over imaginary hygiene issues are very tiresome.

Thirty years ago, no one would have dreamt of dining in a hotel in nightwear because it was simply unacceptable. But they may well have not showered that morning because it was perfectly normal to have a nightly bath rather than a morning shower. The two things were not intrinsically linked. And it’s still not the law to shower first thing. But it’s polite to wear clothes to a public restaurant.
