AIBU to think this is grim?

DH gets a Graze box in the post every month (random collection of snacks in box which fits through the letterbox).

There's no obvious home for it in the kitchen cupboards so he puts it on top of a stack of dinner plates.

I think this is grim because it's been through the postal system, handled at the sorting office, handled by the postman and lands of our floor just inside the door right where everyone treads in their shoes when they come into the house.

He sees no issue in then putting food onto the plate the box has been on. I disagree. AIBU?

disgusting. posts like this make me miss my exdh. he had many faults, but he has been the only man I have met who genuinely appreciates cleanliness at the same level as me.

InSpainTheRain · 23/10/2023 21:38

Just find a reasonable place for his snacks - surely that is the simple answer.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/10/2023 21:43

I’d be more annoyed about having to lift it up each time I wanted to get a plate.

topnoddy · 23/10/2023 21:48

And is this why there are so many people with allergies to this that and whatever these days , no one gets exposed to anything apart from sanitisers and disinfectants .

But you don't store them on top of the plate you'll eat them off 😵‍💫

No, but you touch them and put them in your cupboards and on your worktops…

or do you wash your hands- take your cornflakes out of the cupboard- wash your hands-take out your bowl- put milk and cornflakes into the bowl (without the containers touching the surface, the bowl or the contents there in)- wash your hands- and finally eat your food? What happens if the spoon is rested on the worktop where something else has just been? Is it then contaminated?!

Don’t forget that people might have touched the fridge handle without washing their hands… better wash thoroughly between getting the butter out and buttering your toast!

I think of you are going to worry about this you might as well start disinfecting all your shopping- the cereal packets/butter/milk carton etc that you buy in the supermarket will also be ‘dirty’.

Na cos they're not touching plates or cutlery

I have contamination OCD and these are everyday thoughts for me. I would never put my cutlery on the side. I don't mind putting the boxes on the side or in the cupboard because those aren't surfaces I'll be directly eating off.

I will tell you how far I take this hygeine stuff to make a slice of toast, I have a technique that involves the least amount of hand washes possible. So I will get out the bread packet and open the top, get the butter and jam out of the fridge and open both lids, get two knives out (making sure not to touch the top) and put them inside the jam and butter, then wash my hands, then get the bread out of the packet and put it in the toaster (touching the toaster handle thingy with the back of my hand) pick the toast out, spread the butter and jam on it, put everything away and then wash my hands again before eating it.

You're meant to clean fridge handle regularly and yes the cutlery could become contaminated. With germs. Raw chicken. Allergens.

Cutlery goes on a clean plate (which hasn't had a box on)

How many times has his doing this made him, or anybody, ill? I think that's your answer.

I mean how would you know if someone vomiting was because of a bug or because of a dirty plate? You wouldn't.

Yes, you have ocd which leads to this kind of behaviour. It isn’t usual behaviour, that’s why it’s a diagnosable illness. If it were necessary for everyone to be this concerned about germs, then your behaviour wouldn’t be considered a disorder.

Yeah but I think some things (like putting a box that's been on a hallway floor where people walk with their outdoor shoes, plus has been through a postal sorting office, again possibly being on the floor) is very grim, imagine the nasties on it 🤢

If you are chopping raw chicken on the bare worktop and not cleaning it afterwards then you have bigger problems than one plate with a box on it.

I'm also aware that most people are happy to touch a fridge handle and not wash their hands and accept that me doing that is part of OCD, however I'd assume most people wouldn't touch the bottom of a shoe and then eat without washing their hands.

No, and since the op’s husband isn’t doing that either it’s probably not relevant.

Also you could lick the soles of shoes and 9 times at least out of 10 you would be fine. Think of all the crap toddlers do- drop dummy, back in mouth/ chew shoes/ eat sand, soil, grass, stick and mud etc/eat out of the dog bowl and all sorts- they rarely end up with bacterial infections.

QuestionableMouse · 23/10/2023 23:21

Some exposure to germs is good for your immune system. Everyone is so frigging obsessed with everything in their house being sterile it's no wonder there's so many super bugs about.

Christ on a bike 🙄 why not just have yourself laminated? That way nothing can get in.

Brilliant 😂

TheKeatingFive · 23/10/2023 23:38

Wouldn't occur to me to worry about something like this. Thankfully 😂

TheKeatingFive · 23/10/2023 23:40

Also, I'm stunned that people are still getting graze boxes

ThinWomansBrain · 23/10/2023 23:40

absolutely fine - so long as its the plate that he is going to eat from

Circe32 · 24/10/2023 00:01

Definitely grim! I almost got annoyed at my DH placing the takeaway bag on top of the plates to be used - germs from restaurant & delivery vehicle...

NorthernLights5 · 24/10/2023 04:06

Flavabobble · 23/10/2023 19:52

Two things:

  1. You stack your plates? Doesn't everyone have racks that you can slot plates into or is that just me?
*I always rinse any plates and cups before use anyway as they've been sat in an old dusty cupboard. It's not really that much effort. And I think it's kinda grim not to give plates a quick wash before use anyway*

wtf?? Maybe give the cupboard itself a clean now and then - that's just barmy.

My grandmother had plate racks. She's 91 now and in a care home so I no longer know anyone who uses them! Although I do agree about that poster cleaning their cupboard! Plates should not need washing again when you take them out of the cupboard!

Latenightreader · 24/10/2023 08:00

I use plate racks and always have - saves lifting off all the smaller plates to get to a big one!

I am not too fussy about contamination, but I wouldn’t want something that has been on the floor (especially a doormat) straight on top of a plate. Kitchen counter/sofa/table would be fine. Directly on to a plate seems a step too far, especially when it can be easily avoided.
