Parking Etiquette- (ir)rational rage

This happened about 9.30am this morning but DH has just put a cup of tea in front of me and I’ve mentioned it again and he’s told me (jokingly) I need to get over it, but it’s still giving me the rage!!

I’ll try and attach a photo as I might not describe it properly, but we were driving along in a supermarket car park, one way road, disabled spaces in the middle and notice spaces the other side so you have to drive round to get there. As we’re driving round the car behind cuts through the disabled spaces and STEALS OUR SPACE! DH doesn’t bat an eyelid and carries on and parks in another space a few down. I’m all for leaping out the car and giving her a piece of my mind but apparently that would be an overreaction.

Am I being unreasonable to think you don’t do that?! You follow the one way road and park in order?

I’m all for digging out one of DS’s balaclavas, tracking her down and slashing her tyres…(obviously not)

I would have been annoyed too, OP.

OK, you still got a space, but that's not the point, is it.

A sort of equivalent thing would be if you were standing in a queue, the kind that snakes in an s-shape.

I bet everyone on this thread saying what the other driver did was fine, would be pissed off if they were standing in a queue and someone cut the corner iyswim and pushed in front of them. Even if it meant that they still got to the front, but just a few minutes later 🤷‍♀️

Sounds like you have other problems in your life. OH having an affair, I’m guessing?

And the prize for biggest cognitive leap of the day goes to...

Maxus · 23/10/2023 08:37

There where other spaces available. To be fair the other driver would have had no idea which space you planned to use.

Passepartoute · 23/10/2023 08:38

You parked a few spaces down, FFS. She held you up for all of around 5 seconds. You would have looked utterly ridiculous leaping out of the car and shouting at her.

Seriously, do you normally get this wound up about trivialities? It's potentially quite dangerous.

BitofaStramash · 23/10/2023 08:39

How would they have known it was your space. You weren't even in the lane yet.

Many years ago I was maneovering to park in a crowded car park when a man drove the wrong way and parked into my space. I got out to remonstrate with him and he said "You should have been quicker you stupid cow," then walked off laughing.

A woman returning to her car came over to me and said "That wasn't very nice was it. But luckily my husband's tool box is in the boot." I watched open mouthed as she rummaged in the boot of her car and came back with a hammer and four large nails, then proceeded to hammer a nail into each tyre.

That woman is my all time hero.

Yay, vandalism, how heroic

The only part of your story you got wrong was it being her husbands tool box. Every mumsnetter knows women have their own toolboxes in their cars ready for such moments.

I hope you made this up. And even then i'm very worried you think this despicable behaviour is heroic.

You know when he got back he thought it was you.

Your diagram is 10/10.

Feeling sorry for your poor DH though if you were still banging on about this hours later.

bathrobeandpie · 23/10/2023 12:21

It's an absolute dick move, but you do have to let it go 😂.

I do hope people like that get a flat tire straight after they drive in dog poo though.

PuppyMonkey · 23/10/2023 12:22

It’s the sort of thing that would make me go FFS but in a “wish I’d thought of doing that” way - not in a festering on it for 3 hours way.

KingsleyBorder · 23/10/2023 12:32

Atmytethersend · 23/10/2023 08:18

To be honest, that's what I thought, and that's why I got mixed up with the illegal thing, as thought it was all car parks. But apparently private car parks can have their own laws so to speak. Not sure how often they enforce them, and how easy it would be for them, who knows

But even so, how would the rule “don’t drive through an empty space to get to another part of the car park” be stated and publicise? Nobody is going to read that level of detail on a car park sign! Even one-way arrows painted on the ground are more for safety/guidance/ease of use than something that would result in a punishable violation if breached. Only rally bad one I can think of is driving the wrong way up one of those spiral ramps in a multi storey.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/10/2023 13:30

I probably would have done this tbh. Without even realising. Once I had a hospital appointment at a busy hospital and saw a space and a car at the side of the other spaces not indicating or anything. I drove into the space and he started being abusive saying I had nicked 'his space'.

I was like, whaat, Kathy Burke was in Fried Green Tomatoes….?

That’s Kathy Bates.

(YANBU OP)

😂😂 I was thinking Kathy Bates - don't know what my fingers were doing, but now - they should do a British version with Kathy Burke "Fried Egg Sandwiches at the Whistlestop Greasy Spoon".

Gingerkins · 23/10/2023 16:59

Chocolate, I’d be absolutely enraged at the injustice too! Bastards!
But your diagram had me in stitches! Wanker indeed 🤣
