Parking Etiquette- (ir)rational rage

This happened about 9.30am this morning but DH has just put a cup of tea in front of me and I’ve mentioned it again and he’s told me (jokingly) I need to get over it, but it’s still giving me the rage!!

I’ll try and attach a photo as I might not describe it properly, but we were driving along in a supermarket car park, one way road, disabled spaces in the middle and notice spaces the other side so you have to drive round to get there. As we’re driving round the car behind cuts through the disabled spaces and STEALS OUR SPACE! DH doesn’t bat an eyelid and carries on and parks in another space a few down. I’m all for leaping out the car and giving her a piece of my mind but apparently that would be an overreaction.

Am I being unreasonable to think you don’t do that?! You follow the one way road and park in order?

I’m all for digging out one of DS’s balaclavas, tracking her down and slashing her tyres…(obviously not)

That is wankerish of them, but you got a space so I’d try to let it go

macandcheeses · 22/10/2023 23:43

It wasn't your space it was an empty space.

Not sure what they did wrong by driving across the disabled bays, you are allowed to drive across bays in a car park.

I wouldn't have thought anything of it

They jumped the queue

feelingalittlehorse · 22/10/2023 23:49

That diagram though 👍

Clear - yes
A good size so no zooming in required- yes
Labelled appropriately- yes

10/10 for that.

What queue?

Not unreasonable. You should have gone the full Kathy Burke on her.

I was like, whaat, Kathy Burke was in Fried Green Tomatoes….?

That’s Kathy Bates.

Yeh this annoys me no end too. And so bloody dangerous. You are not being unreasonable op

honestlyseriously · 22/10/2023 23:52

Are you always so aggressive? Seriously chill out, its a parking space and you got another one. Really not a big deal.

It's actually illegal

Theproofofthepudding · 23/10/2023 00:00

I look for a space with an empty space in front to drive into, and drive out of, because I'm a bit shit at reversing into a too tight space. I'm sure it might annoy some if they think they've earmarked it, but as others say you don't know if someone's leaving the cp. It's happened to me the other way too and I've been on the receiving end!

macandcheeses · 23/10/2023 00:06

I had no idea.

Gold star for the diagram ⭐ 😁

Saschka · 23/10/2023 07:38

It’s bad driving and poor etiquette, but I wouldn’t still be annoyed about it the next day!

I would just think “wow they are a bad driver and must get in a lot of accidents”, and move on with my day.

I'm still annoyed at the woman who took the last space in the hospital car park from under my nose by driving the wrong way to get to it. And that was months ago 😂

Sorry I was going by quite a few of my local parking lots, that have their own rules. My mistake.

Then it would be against the rules (of that carpark). Not illegal.

No some have their own laws, if not owned by the public

I thought they were terms and conditions of the contract you agree to by parking there?

VisaWoes · 23/10/2023 08:15

It's a bit cheeky but I wouldn't have been too bothered by it.

I was once sat for 20 mins in a car park waiting for a space and someone was coming out so I had to wait for them to come out and was indicating and everything and someone who just arrived barged past and got the space. I did get out and tell them I'd been waiting and they had very poor parking etiquette. Anyway, they didn't move :)

I'm still a bit pissed about that.

Pipistrellus · 23/10/2023 08:11

To be honest, that's what I thought, and that's why I got mixed up with the illegal thing, as thought it was all car parks. But apparently private car parks can have their own laws so to speak. Not sure how often they enforce them, and how easy it would be for them, who knows

TravelInHope · 23/10/2023 08:20

Sounds like you have other problems in your life. OH having an affair, I’m guessing?

Ohdearanotheryear · 23/10/2023 08:21

rwalker · 22/10/2023 19:52

Very annoying for all of 5 minutes till u park up in another space

I think your DH will be more pissed off at u banging on about it than losing the space in the 1st place

This. How annoying that it dominated the day.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/10/2023 08:22

What annoys me more is when people leave their doors open next to an empty space so you can't get into it.

Get into space, open door, get out, close door.

Obviously this does not apply to people in the blue badge or P&C spaces who will need more time, but then I wouldn't be trying to get into a space next to them anyway.

Sorry I was going by quite a few of my local parking lots, that have their own rules. My mistake.

Surely these rules would be in no way enforceable. How would they ‘police’ people not driving over disabled spaces?

In our local Tesco Extra, there is a row of regular spaces and a weird sort of triangle of disabled spaces in front. In theory, you’re meant to drive around the triangle, towards the shop to then double back and leave the car park because of their one way system (blue line). The point of the triangle is right by the only door into the shop so there are always loads of people meandering about with trolleys. It’s safer to avoid driving in this section so I will drive over the disabled spaces if they’re free to get to the exit when I park in the first row of regular spaces (red line). I can’t be blocking the space for more than 3-5 seconds - it’s a busy section for pedestrians but not really cars - and I am driving carefully because it’s a car park with randomly moving cars and people.

Why on earth would this be against any ‘rules’?
