To talk to cleaner about this and not use again

betray · 22/10/2023 08:30

We went away and paid our cleaner 4 hours to clean the house
She came and spent 1.hr 20 mins there and saw it on the door bell
We home swap and our last two guests said the house was not clean
We thought they were being fussy and couldn't understand
This home swap she spent 1hr 21 minutes there
I'm worried these guests will complain house isn't clean again
I need her to sort the house for our return
I want her to do the return clean as I haven't got any notice but she needs to unpack our groceries too
If we get another bad rating for cleanliness it's going to jeopardise our future swaps which is how we go on holiday
I'm so hurt
What shall I do? Say something or just leave and not use again? So so upset

Well, not really, and others have suggested similar.

No they haven't.

The comments in here are wild. No one gets paid for their free time so why should your cleaner. A simple “I noticed you didn’t work your contracted hours this week and I therefore won’t be using your services again” will suffice.

Yes why not just this or the one from Emma above:

  • ‘My guests were unhappy with the cleanliness of the house and I noticed on the security camera you were there for a much shorter time than we agreed. I’ll pay you for two hours per visit, which exceeds the the time spent, but I’m afraid I need to end the arrangement going forward. Thanks.’

You need to calm down and be business like. Make sure you get your keys back and then dismiss her. If she does leave a shitty review, you can leave one back or answer with the ring camera footage so everyone knows she's a cheeky piss taker!

I have four kids. I always clean my house spotless the day before we go on holiday so it's spotless when I come home. We all use the same shower on the day we go, and I even use paper plates for breakfast, so I can bin them before we leave.

Well good for you. Pop off and polish your perfect mum halo while the rest of us try to suggest things to help OP.

You may not be able to do this anyway now.

Certainly in Scotland, holiday swaps are classed as short term rentals and are covered by the new fire regulations. This means hard wired linked fire alarms in every habitable room ( I've had to put 7 in my tiny 3 bed FHL), fire doors and non key operated locks, emergency lighting and a whole raft of regulations.

Check the rules where you live. Wales and England are covered by the new legislation too from the 1st October but I don't know if swapping here is considered a STR.

We have hard wired alarms but thanks so much for this it's a good point
We have had them for about 13 years im obsessed with safety 😂

Also at the comments on my poor kids going on holiday 😂😂

@Unicorntastic

That is such a good idea I honestly wouldn't have mind at all if it was a price for the clean

It's two 4 hour cleans one for our guests then one for us

But a price for the job would have made me less upset

If you don't stand by your response .. don't post it. Definitely don't get huffy if OP responds to you.

I do stand by my response, just curious as to why similar responses were ignored.
Also, it wasn't OP I was responding to here, but another random poster.

Not sure why that drum needs to be repeatedly banged. As far as I am aware it doesn’t mean that people can’t address what you said.

OP, don’t allow yourself to be taken advantage of by paying for a service you didn’t receive.

I'm responding to the pile on of posters accusing me of being the only person to say something about OP potentially cleaning herself - perhaps ask them to stop with the drum banging too, especially as they're banging the wrong tune.

To be fair suggesting she cleans her house herself isn't a particularly helpful comment. Anyone who gets a cleaner does so either because they are unable or unwilling to clean their own houses for whatever reason. That's a given. So if she is employing a cleaner, she will have reason for doing so. If cleaning her own house was an option, then I'm sure she'd be doing that already.

It might be helpful in the immediate short term.
Also, there are people with plenty of time who also employ cleaners.*

And what's wrong with that? What exactly are you getting at? Are you really going to stand by that suggesting she cleans herself is a helpful comment? Don't you think the op would have thought of that and done it if it was actually an option? You are really coming across as having an issue with people who employ cleaners.

‘But muuuuum…! Tell them off too!’

People are responding to your comment. That’s generally how message boards work.

She doesn’t want to do it herself, that’s why she employed a fucking cleaner. Whether you’re the only one who ‘helpfully’ suggested it or not is irrelevant.

Ireolu · 22/10/2023 19:49

You are very sassy in some of your responses on this thread OP. I suggest you employ some of this sass talking to your useless cleaner. Hope it goes well.

I'm not 'getting at' anything.
It was a suggestion, which might' have been a (short term) answer.
It wasn't any sort of statement regarding cleaners in general or having a cleaner or needing a cleaner or choosing to have a cleaner.
OP seems stressed by it all and if she was able to do it herself (in the short term) then it would give her time to sort something that works better for her.

It's relevant to point out that other posters have said the same thing yet haven't been jumped on, by at least 5 people so far......I've replied to every comment, from now on folk can just read previous replies

Pile away, it's why some folk are here anyway. 😂

roses2 · 22/10/2023 19:56

If you haven’t paid her in full then I’d pay her for hours worked and tell her why. If she leaves a bad review then post a factual reply so people can see.

It will make her think twice about ripping off her next client.

But are the other ones that said it still banging on about not being the only one that said it, and keeping a tally?

You posted a disingenuous message and got replies. That tends to happen on forums.

Araminta1003 · 22/10/2023 20:00

If she has contracted orally to do 4 hours she is in breach of contract. Let her do the last clean and then tell her she owes you money back or you are taking her to the small claims court using the ring door bell evidence. I hope you have the 4 hours clean in writing on text messages etc.

Unicorn2022 · 22/10/2023 20:06

OP nobody who suggested doing the cleaning yourself is saying it because they are envious or resentful that you can afford a cleaner! They have suggested it because this cleaner is causing you a lot of angst, and you have been paying for a service you aren't receiving, wasting money and causing yourself stress.

I can afford a cleaner if I wanted one, but the idea of a stranger in my house doesn't appeal to me at all. Neither does the idea of swapping my house with a complete stranger from another country. No jealousy at all! And ordering shopping for someone else to put away seems bizarre to me. I normally pick up bread and milk on the way home from the airport and order a shop when we get home. Outsourcing stuff seems to be causing you more trouble than it's worth.

JaneGainsborough · 22/10/2023 20:33

OP, YANBU at all. I work as a cleaner and I am horrified at the idea of doing less than I am paid for. In fact, in the past I have had CFers trying to underpay me and taking the piss, which makes me all the more grateful for decent clients like you. You need to sack the thief.

As for the people who say 'first world problems', stop being absurd. Would you be happy to be ripped off and not receive a service for which you had paid good money?

WinterDeWinter · 22/10/2023 20:38

Re 'first world problems', possibly the most asinine response in a world of asinine responses. As a pp said, we're in the first world. It would be pretty shit if we starting appropriating second/third/developing world problems.

WinterDeWinter · 22/10/2023 20:39

Also, the way things are going we might not be in the first world for much longer, so, you know, own it while you can.
