Naturist resort

A long time friend has invited me and DC on holiday with her family to Germany for next year, all is well, I’ve been on holiday with her before in the past and it would be lovely to get away since last time was pre-lockdown. However, it’s a predominantly naturist resort/campsite which has me unsure whether we should go. I’m not inherently adverse to it since she’s told me covering up is optional, however I’ve never done something like this and I do have a few worries

What are your worries?

Mercurial123 · 21/10/2023 12:34

My friend stayed with a German family who were naturists. They took her hiking and sailing. She found it awkward.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/10/2023 12:36

Personally, not my cup of tea.

JMSA · 21/10/2023 12:37

Nah. Unless you're specifically into that, why would you?

Well the main one is the obvious one of just being in the nude out and about. I know everyone else would be too and that’s sort of the point but it’s pretty alien to me. Friend and her family have always been a lot more open to that lifestyle and I do see the positives of it, it is quite a daunting thing too.

See the Hiking and sailing sounds fun.

One thing that does entice me about these sorts of places is that they seem to be much more friendly and community driven than a typical holiday in the Uk for example. Also they seem to do a lot more adventurous activities like sailing, and I think the nature side of things would be good.

But your poor kids!!

JMSA · 21/10/2023 12:48

You have the choice, presumably they don't.

emmylou24 · 21/10/2023 12:50

German naturists are a bit more interesting so definitely need to think lol. Growing up we used to go to naturist camps regularly and it was nice till we had lots of German naturists. Changed dynamics a lot. Not even fully sure how to describe it but sometimes lewd acts in family friendly areas weren't appreciated and the regulars at camp definitely weren't happy with the changes. Haven't been for many years though so things may have changed

They do have a choice, DC doesn’t mind at all. If they said no or that they weren’t sure then we wouldn’t go. It’s more me worrying about things to be honest

How old are your children?

Just one, 11. Our DC are friends too as similar in age.

Oh that doesn’t sound good? I thought mainland europeans were a lot better with this sort of thing so it worries me to hear that

I mean, I can’t imagine anything more horrendous personally but maybe that’s just me.Grin

(your poor child)

Sirzy · 21/10/2023 13:07

It’s not one anyone else can answer for you. Personally it’s not my cup of tea but each to their own.

margotrose · 21/10/2023 13:08

I don't think your 11yo is old enough to understand what they're agreeing to, tbh.

TheGooseDrankWine · 21/10/2023 13:09

Isn’t naturism more of a way of life than it is here? As in people sunbathe named in public parks etc? I am very used to Germans stripping off on beaches in Greece, Canary Islands etc.

Anyway if you are not comfortable with it, that’s OK, just tell her.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 21/10/2023 13:13

Absolutely no from me.
I get that it's not a sexual thing, but it just wouldn't feel right to me to take a child to a place where there's loads of naked strangers.
Maybe I'm uptight, but still, nope

Absolutely this. I wouldn’t go or take my child. It’s all a bit dodgy in my experience. There are always a number of weird types attracted to naturist sites. We’ve seen some of them in Spain, a German bloke was wandering about on the naturist beach with a semi erect penis, another man was kneeling with his bare arse facing everyone. Yuk.

AIBUNature · 21/10/2023 13:17

Thank you all for your input and thoughts, you’ve convinced me and thinking about it again, yes it probably wouldn’t be fair for DS since he won’t fully understand until he’s in that situation. I still respect naturism but like some of you said, it only takes one weirdo at the resort. I’ll let her know that we won’t go, It’s a shame but for the best I think.

Well, exactly Hmm

Honestly OP, this is a batshit plan. Just take your child on a normal holiday.

stylishnot · 21/10/2023 13:28

Well wtf would you even think it's ok to ask? Off course it's not appropriate for your dc.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 21/10/2023 13:39

When I about four my parents took us camping in the south of France and we visited what was then called a 'nudist colony' on the coast. This was in the 1960s. It was confusing at the time as I'd never been anywhere like that before and didn't understand why no one was wearing a stitch of clothing. I remember quite a lot of boats full of tourists sailing by to gawk and being absolutely horrified. My parents tried to get me to take my bikini bottoms off but I adamantly refused to. Thankfully they didn't push it, but it was awful. I think my brothers were okay about it, but I very much was not, not even a bit.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/10/2023 13:41

11? Hell no ( it politely)Would have died of embarrassment.

WhateverMate · 21/10/2023 13:43

There are 100s of naturist groups on Facebook, you'd be better off asking on there than MN I think?

Also extremely unusual for a naturist resort to have a 'clothing optional' rule.

They don't normally do this as it encourages voyeurs.
