Electricity

I woke up this morning to an electricity issue.

All of my lights turn on, but none of my plug sockets work. This has never happened before.

So all my light switches turn on, but if I plug an appliance into any socket it doesn't work.

I just rang a couple of local electricians and their call out fees are really huge.

I was just wondering has anyone fixed this by themselves.

I'm going to just try a few things this weekend and then if I have to give in an get an electrician next week I will

Someone online said to unplug all appliances as it could be a faulty appliance. I've just done that.

I was just wondering has this happened to anyone else and were you able to fix it yourself? Thanks

have you checked to see if a fuse has blown

Superscientist · 19/10/2023 15:33

Do you have access to your consumer unit? Have you checked if any on the switches have tripped?

How would I check that?

Do you know where your fuse box is? Likelihood is a single circuit has tripped. Not a big deal.

I checked the switches. They seem to all be on .

Check if your fuse board has a switch down. If so, put it up and turn each appliance back on. It is likely one has shorted out and taken the circuit down as a safety measure.

Fahhgedaboutit · 19/10/2023 15:34

Ooh ours did this a couple of weeks ago. DH had checked the fuse box but there was another switch in the box that just needed resetting. I know nothing about any of this but try that?

Desecratedcoconut · 19/10/2023 15:34

Your rcd has probably tripped. My dh is a sparky, he said if you take a picture of the fuse board he might be able to help you.

Fahhgedaboutit · 19/10/2023 15:34

Or basically what @LIZS said in a much more clever way than I did

CarrickBends · 19/10/2023 15:34

just check and see if a switch has tripped

Motomum23 · 19/10/2023 15:34

Find your fusebox... if its modern enough it will show a switch flicked off instead of on. I would also call your electricity company - I had lights but no socket power when a wire had come loose on the pole outside my house. It was fixed within about 3 hours.

Ah that's so kind thank you very much. I'm out of the house at the moment. When I am back in the house in a couple of hours I'll take a photo of it.

I looked at the fusebox. All the switches look like they are on okay.

I wonder what it is.

No problem. I did say there was a cuppa in it for him but I'll put it on hiatus.

HakunaMatiÅ‚da · 19/10/2023 15:39

Post a picture of your fuse box / consumer unit.

I bet the RCD has tripped!

HakunaMatiÅ‚da · 19/10/2023 15:40

Apologies. I should have refreshed the thread before I posted - I’ve inadvertently cancelled the cheque.

SecondUsername4me · 19/10/2023 15:41

Your lights will be on one "loop" and your sockets on another "loop". Can you post a pic of your switchboard and we can possibly advise further?

Superscientist · 19/10/2023 15:42

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 15:33

I checked the switches. They seem to all be on .

On as in they are in place or on as in all of the levers are in the same position?
Do any of them have labels on? A good electrician will label the circuit but they don't all. Find the one that says sockets and check that this is in the same position as the other switches.

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 15:45

Thanks for all the advice. I really appreciate it. Yes I need to take another look at the fuse box.

As soon as I'm back in my house, in about an hour and a half, I will post a picture.

Try flipping switch top left .

LyndaLaHughes · 19/10/2023 17:55

So basically unplug everything- most likely culprit is kettle or toaster and then put the switch back up and then plug things back in one by one to see which item it is.

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 17:55

Top left won't stay up.
