Electricity

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 15:31

I woke up this morning to an electricity issue.

All of my lights turn on, but none of my plug sockets work. This has never happened before.

So all my light switches turn on, but if I plug an appliance into any socket it doesn't work.

I just rang a couple of local electricians and their call out fees are really huge.

I was just wondering has anyone fixed this by themselves.

I'm going to just try a few things this weekend and then if I have to give in an get an electrician next week I will

Someone online said to unplug all appliances as it could be a faulty appliance. I've just done that.

I was just wondering has this happened to anyone else and were you able to fix it yourself? Thanks

No you have to unplug everything first

LyndaLaHughes · 19/10/2023 17:56

You've got something plugged in which is tripping it. Like I say, most likely culprit is kettle or toaster

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 17:56

I'm trying the top left switch. It won't stay up.

Have you plugged everything out?

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 17:57

Ok ill make sure everything is unplugged

Go round all your sockets in the house and turn them off/unplug every socket.

Go back and flip it up.

Allywill · 19/10/2023 17:58

unplug everything from the sockets that don’t work then the switch will go up. plug things in one at a time until you find the one that trips the switch. then leave that unplugged and reset the switch again. the item that trips the switch will need to be fixed or replaced.

VisionsOfSplendour · 19/10/2023 17:58

It wont stay up because what ever tripped it in the first place is still plugged in

Once you've unplugged everything you might need to reset the box

And sorry to laugh but how did you think all the switches were up 😀

Crabward · 19/10/2023 17:59

Once youve turned all the plugs off and flipped the switch back up, you'll need to turn the plusg back on one by one, and between each one check the switch hasnt flipped back down again - if it does then whichever one youve just plugged in is the faulty item. It helps to have a 2nd person watching the fuse board as you slowly turn on the plugs

MadeForThis · 19/10/2023 18:01

Something is tripping the fuse. Once that is unplugged it should stay up

VisionsOfSplendour · 19/10/2023 18:01

If it went off overnight it should be fairly easy to find the rogue applicance as there won't be much on during the night

Have you tried both upstairs and downstairs sockets?

CrunchyCarrot · 19/10/2023 18:03

We've just had this issue today. Power went off. The switch had tripped. We knew it was in the kitchen socket area so we unplugged everything, switch then stayed up. Plugged in each device one at a time and turned on. The faulty thing was the fridge if you please.

PlantDoctor · 19/10/2023 18:05

Did you run anything overnight, like washing machine, slow cooker, dishwasher, heater, etc.?

Desecratedcoconut · 19/10/2023 18:10

Okay, so start by putting all of the ones on the right down (each individual circuit breaker).

Then see if the one on the left will push up. Then switch each one on the right up, one at a time.

It will probably be only one which is causing it to trip. If this is the case, find out which sockets have not come back on and unplug everything plugged in to those sockets. After everything is unplugged see if the circuit breaker will switch back up.

You are for one appliance on that circuit causing it to trip. But if it's more complicated than that it, then it could be a wiring problem and you will need an electrician.

travellinglighter · 19/10/2023 18:21

Right. Here is what you do.

  1. switch all trip switches down.
  2. Switch the top left switch up.
  3. If it stays up, switch all the other switches on one by one.
  4. if one switch cause the top left switch to trip. Leave the offending switch down and switch the top left switch up again.
  5. Continue switching the other switches up to make sure none of the other switches trip the top left switch. If they do, leave them down switch the top left switch back on.
  6. Once you have established which is the switch with the issue, go and see what’s not working. If a socket that’s not working has anything plugged in, take the plug out.
  7. when this is all done go back and close the switch with the issue. If it stays up, then something you have plugged into that circuit is the issue. If it trips again you need an electrician.
  8. if it’s something that was plugged in was the issue then use a process of elimination to find out item it is. Switch the little switch on the socket off, plug an item back in and close the socket switch. If the power goes off. That’s your faulty item.

Worst offenders are usually washing machines, fridges and dishwashers but extension leads and multi socket plugs can be fun. Garage sockets are usually poor too.

Good luck

Have you got an electric shower? Sometimes it is the separate isolator on those that sets it off.

Ours was like that the other day and we just put all the switches down and then back up again and then it was fine.

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 18:46

I plugged absolutely everything out. I went round the house and checked three times. Absolutely nothing is plugged in. Fridge is plugged out. Electric shower is turned off.

Left top switch still won't stay up

Have you got one of those red light switches for your oven/hob? Was that off?

Reallybadidea · 19/10/2023 18:51

Electric oven/hob switched off at their isolators?

WaitingForSunnyDays · 19/10/2023 18:51

What @travellinglighter said. Start with all the switches down.

The switches on the board that are up, to the right of the down one, flip them all down too and try flicking the left one up

2764mice · 19/10/2023 18:55

Anyone else really invested in this thread now?
Hope you find the answer OP!

Mooshamoo · 19/10/2023 18:56

Thanks yeah I did what travelling lighter said.

The first switch will stay up by itself. It is the fourth switch along that makes the first switch turn off. But that doesn't tell me where the problem outlet is. Thanks for the advice though.

I had to leave the house to reply. I'm sitting in a cafe charging my phone :( . This sucks
