Private school vs private anything educational

If you have an issue with private schools, why? Do you have an issue with:

Buying houses in expensive catchment areas
Extracurricular activities such as music lessons, swimming, sports coaching
Tutors; language, 11+, GCSE

(Also, private healthcare, dentists, opticians)

I honestly don't understand the angst when it comes to private schools. Let people spend their money however they see fit.

You know its envy because you dont envy us. I hope you sleep well tonight in your warm house and feel better about yourself after starting such a mean and thoughtless thread. 👏well done, you're a better parent and giving your kids better than most of us.

I think it's unfair you can buy your way out of a failing school and I cant. I work hard too. I'm a good mum. I was bought up without money and I did the best my parents could offer me and I'm doing my best for my children. But it will never be as much as you cam do for yours. My child is lovely. Kind, thoughtful, hard working. And she will never get those opportunities.

Life is unfair on all facets. It's odd to point the blame at schools

There is no such thing as “ amazing grammars”. They are just schools ( often with high levels of lazy teaching) containing kids easier to teach because the top 10 % have been creamed off. Often they’re even more underfunded and classes are just as massive None will give you the unfair advantages that private schools do.

Unfortunately though, attacking private schools and taxing them isn’t going to help with that. There needs to be focus on improving failing schools.

Spattergroit · 17/10/2023 21:01

If private schools didn't exist inequality in society would still exist that is true for sure.

What is different about private education though is that is buying access to networks of privilege that are inaccessible to most of society. Education should be a great leveller, allowing the best, most suited and cleverest candidates get to the top. When you can buy your way into the best then this isn't possible.

I'm not jealous of those who pay for privilege in this way. I'm furious that it is allowed.

ToadOnTheHill · 17/10/2023 21:01

I'm not blaming schools. Indo think you're being deliberately obtuse and that money cant buy class.

Annoyingfly · 17/10/2023 21:02

stopitstopitnooow · 17/10/2023 20:52

Could be this simple indeed

It isn't, though. Bear in mind the number of people against them, or at least for charging VAT who were themselves privately educated or sent their kids.
Didn't, before you all jump.

Springingintosummer · 17/10/2023 21:02

Sadly no free nhs dentists anymore and not had free opticians since a young child here. It is not all about choice.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/10/2023 21:03

Well, the blame is on governments really, not schools.

Education should be a great leveller, allowing the best, most suited and cleverest candidates get to the top.

Exactly.

Another65, who said I was on board with grammar schools?

My point is that there inequality in the state sector, often far more than the state/private difference.

ToadOnTheHill · 17/10/2023 21:04

You're right, let's give people without the privilege of private school opportunities, you know, the less educated ones, the problem of fixing state schools. It would be lovely if the educated could do it.

In what way 'more than'?

Stats show they don’t give the same advantages as private schools if the kids are in state schools. Private school kids are massively over represented in the best unis, jobs and careers. A few hours of tutoring from a lack lustre tutor will not give you the advantages a private education will. Neither will music lessons.

Private education is out of the question for all but a small minority.

stopitstopitnooow · 17/10/2023 20:43

Why schools specifically? There are divides everywhere.

I don't have a Porsche. Should they be banned because I'm envious? No.

Does you driving a porsche mean that you are more likely to get a higher matk in your driving test? Or get accepted onto an advanced driving course? Get an internship with Porsche?

Do non-porch drivers have to drive on different roads while all the porsche drivers stick together and don't have to contend with busses, bikes, drunk drivers?

Do you think you are a better driver because you bought a Porsche and I only have a volvo?

Genuinely curious what unfair advantage private school kids have over grammar school kids.

They tend to attract pupils that are keen to learn and try their best, providing a better environment for learning. It’s exactly the reason why many parents are attracted to the private sector.

As others had stated lessons isn't the same as an education and regards to university that's equal and not about money.

We all know wealthy people hate paying VAT 😂they dodge it in most aspects of life

Mumof2teens79 · 17/10/2023 21:07

Another76543 · 17/10/2023 20:51

I’ve never understood this either. People are happy for parents to pay for tuition, extra curricular activities, expensive houses in decent catchments, university fees so children don’t have debt, house deposits (all of which give a child a life advantage over their peers), but yet many have strong feelings against private schools and think that those parents should be penalised.

No, left leaning/socialists, especially those with strong feelings about private education are NOT happy with those things

Legaleagleplease · 17/10/2023 21:08

I feel sorry for her kids growing up with a mother with zero empathy.
Totally ignorant to the inequality the majority face.
Before the backlash, I was and still am very fortunate but can understand the tone deaf approach upsetting others.

Spattergroit · 17/10/2023 21:09

If success in society were solely down to academic attainment then we'd have a different set of individuals at the top of our society. Look at politics, the judiciary, merchant banking....

If you compare the bottom performing state schools with the top performing state schools (progress, exam results, behaviour etc), the difference is huge. Arguably, that difference is bigger than the difference between state and private generally.

CatamaranViper · 17/10/2023 21:10

Every child should be entitled to a fair and good education.

Unfortunately the people with the most influence tend to be the ones with the most money. If their kids were in state schools, state schools would be much better.

It's hard enough in life without taking opportunities away from children and giving them to ones whose parents earn that extra zero.

From experience, the networks of privilege things is way over hyped. There is no secret handshake. Most parents are just a passing aquaintence with one another.

Sociologists have shown that the networks that matter most are one’s parents’ networks. The older generation that you can tap up. Not your own school friends.

Parents’ networks the kind deep enough to ask for favours aren’t generally made at the school gates.
