Just accidentally took a swig from my water bottle which I'd left soaking with Milton, about half a cap in 330ml water - bottle says if swallowed contact GP. Am on hold with 111 but anyone know about this?

While you’re on hold with 111, try to work out the following info :

How much is half a cap in mL? Try measuring with a measuring spoon, or weigh the cap if you’ve got decent sensitive kitchen scales, then weigh again half full of water and find the appropriate grams of milton used.
What info is on the milton bottle - somewhere it should give the ingredients list - you want to know what chemical it is and what concentration it is. You don’t need to know what it means really, just be able to read it out to the 111 advisor.
How long ago did you put the milton in the water? Eg. 9pm last night so 14-15 hours?

blarm · 17/10/2023 11:44

Yes I've seen people mixing up the tablets and drank it thinking it was dispersible cocodamol and they were ok.
Do not try to vomit. You can drink water or milk if you feel ok.
Definitely do whatever 111 says and if you are worried go straight to A&E

PercytheParkKeepershedgehog · 17/10/2023 11:45

This is the kind if thing poison control centres deal with. They work out what it is you’ve ingested/been exposed to and at what dose and then advise if there’s any risk/you should see a dr/go to hospital etc. 111 will sort you out. Remember Milton is used to disinfect feeding equipment, it was diluted (according to instructions?) and you only ingested a swig.
If you spat the swig out that’s even better.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 17/10/2023 11:45

A cap of Milton is 30ml

blarm · 17/10/2023 11:47

Oh sorry I have only seen the tablets being accidentally ingested not the liquid so ignore my advice

Portakalkedi · 17/10/2023 11:48

says half a capful is 15ml, bottle is 600ml, active ingredient sodium hypochlorite

OP posts:
UpUpUpU · 17/10/2023 11:50

I’m not a doctor op but considering you don’t have to rinse bottles before giving them to your baby, I think you’ll be ok, but definitely call 111 for advice x

Portakalkedi · 17/10/2023 11:52

waiting for cliniciian to call me back

OP posts:
PercytheParkKeepershedgehog · 17/10/2023 11:53

Is there a percentage written on the Milton bottle? Something like : Sodium hypochlorite 2% ? That’s info they will want to know.

They other useful thing to work out is how much is a swig? Can you estimate it by measuring what’s left in the waterbottle?

newamsterdam · 17/10/2023 11:54

You can add Milton to water to sterilise it to drink it. If you mixed it with water and drank a sip, you'll be fine.

Portakalkedi · 17/10/2023 11:58

yes sodium hypochlorite 2%

OP posts:
Portakalkedi · 17/10/2023 11:59

Cant measure it, just one swig, then realised what id done and poured it away and rinsed, just one swallow

OP posts:
HowAboutTheLittleSpoon · 17/10/2023 12:01

I did this when I was 10. I had to drink a big glass of milk, (which I hated) but I was fine. Hope all is ok OP!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/10/2023 12:02

I've done this! (I was fine btw).
I drank half a pint of water, of a pint that had one tablet in, so pretty strong.

Don't bother waiting for 111, they will only send you to A&E.

Don't be sick.

Do drink more clean water, lots.

Go to A&E. Take the Milton and packaging with you. If you still have the stuff in the bottle you drank from, take that too, so they can measure concentration if needs be.

Portakalkedi · 17/10/2023 12:03

spoken with clinician, just on hold while she gets more info

OP posts:
PercytheParkKeepershedgehog · 17/10/2023 12:03

Don’t worry, they’ll have a general estimate they use for the volume of 1 swallow.

It’s all a question of doses. Hopefully the clinician’s call will be very reassuring for you.

PP is right about sodium hypochlorite being used to disinfect drinking water. It’s something people get advised to do in emergency situations where the water supply has likely been contaminated and the power supply is not functioning - like during the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Utterlypeanuterly · 17/10/2023 12:04

Its ok according to this.

That's a screenshot from the Milton website.

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 12:05

You probably had very little as you didn’t drink it all, just a sip.
I’d say you will be grand, but definitely ring the poison unit as I know absolutely nothing obviously, but hope you get reassurance soon.

TravelInHope · 17/10/2023 12:07

You will be absolutely fine.

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 12:12

Just to make you laugh, my friend was telling me her neighbour was using Milton wipes like baby wipes, even cleaning the little babies face with them.
My friend told her that they were for cleaning the counter tops etc and she just said ‘Milton is for babies’ and carried on.

That was years ago but I laugh every time I think of her with the Milton wipes.

Portakalkedi · 17/10/2023 12:16

Right, thank you all, turns out my Milton is a few years old and the formulation is different now, so the clinician rang the Tox Base to double check, and they agreed with her information that there should be nothing to worry about. I have had water and milk, and am now kicking myself for being such a careless idiot. I will be sure to leave the Milton bottle OUT next to the water bottle next time so I won't do it again!

I drank Coca Cola out of a 2lt bottle that had been used as an ashtray. I don’t know why I decided to drink out of the bottle like that as I don’t even like coke, but that combo is unforgettable. It was at a friends house and there was about 1/4 of the bottle left with a load of fag butts in it. You just reminded me of that.

Glad you are ok!

Unusualactualname · 17/10/2023 12:56

You'll be fine. Your insides will be very clean.

Accidentallydrankmilton · 26/03/2024 14:00

Hello,

I am here to help others because I did this a few hours ago and was desperately searching for help (NHS24 had a two hour wait time).

I drank about equivalent to between half and a whole tablet. My throat was burning for a while and I did feel a bit dizzy/faint.

I drank two litres of water to dilute the Milton and I feel fine now (apart from a bit of a nippy throat).

if this happens to anyone I would just recommend drinking lots of water and/or milk. Unless you start to develop some crazy symptoms I wouldn’t bother going to A&E. My aunty works in A&E and said they would have just monitored me for a few hours, they wouldn’t have given me anything or pumped my stomach etc.

hope this helps someone else who ends up in my stupid situation!
