To worry about brother taking oestrogen

ChamomileHoneyTea · 16/10/2023 20:52

My brother has just announced he is trans and is taking oestrogen he has purchased online. I’m worried that what he’s taking may not be legit and he is not being reviewed by a doctor. He insists he has done research on appropriate dosage. He says the NHS wait times for transitioning are too long.

I'd be wary of anyone buying any medicine from online without the consultation of a doctor or knowing where it was coming from.
How old is your brother?

maltravers · 16/10/2023 21:03

Cut out the haranguing Topeka, not helpful. OP - Can you persuade them to go to the GP to discuss it? Cross sex hormones without any monitoring (even with it frankly) must be very alarming.

You are right to be worried OP, he does not know if it is actually oestrogen he is buying online. Ignore the negative comments about pronouns, you are just trying your best as his sister.

He can see himself however he wants, he cannot demand that other's change the way they see him and his relationship to them, that is not his to define, the op sees him as her brother, that is who he is to her.

Beauty is jn the eye of the beholder - the Subject does not make that determination, you cannot demand reality bends to your whim

The medical advice for a male taking oestrogen is totally different to the medical advice for a female taking oestrogen (when we'd be asking if she was also taking progesterone, and whether she was still menstruation, because of the effect of unopposed oestrogen on the menopausal uterine lining). So calling this individual she and sister would not result in accurate advice.

PosterBoy · 16/10/2023 21:08

How old is your brother?

If over 18 then I would inform him of the risks then shrug your shoulders. Tough but there's not much else you can do anyway.

I don't indulge the genderwoo though.

He's not a woman. It's scientifically impossible to change sex.

I’ve reported your post - it’s hateful, full of untruths and won’t debate this point whatsoever.
People cannot change sex.

Unbelievable how quickly (i.e. taking some oestrogen purchased online) this male apparently becomes a female.

How does a person with any education actually believe this??

Any OP yanbu to be worried about your brother. He sounds unwell and possibly not making the best decisions at the moment.

RagzRebooted · 16/10/2023 21:16

I'd be concerned, but he's an adult and free to take risks. I'm sure he's read more about it that any of us.

On the (inevitable) trans argument, I refer to my trans sibling by his preferred pronouns, but he will always be my sister as that's what I grew up with and all my memories and family experience are of having sisters. I can't erase that in my mind. His name and pronouns I can do, because he's been transitioned for years and has had surgery, but unless I'm talking to strangers (when I usually say brother because I'm saying he) he is still my sister.
That's his relationship 'to me'. A bit like if my Dad transitioned, he wouldn't become my Mum.

It is far clearer to ask the medical question online using the correct sex than to waffle around using non sex related pronouns when asking a medical question. There is no evidence either way as to whether this reflects the OP's practice in person. For instance, I use correctly sexed pronouns on here for clarity. If speaking directly to a trans person, or in the unlikely event of referring to a trans person in his/her presence, I will use the inaccurate pronouns as a courtesy.

A wee bit melodramatic, no? Riding in hard with an aggressive posting style doesn’t usually promote informative debate.

For someone who is presumably 'gender critical', you sure have a stereotypical way of looking at gender. I am a hyperfemme cis woman. There is nothing 'masculine' about me. That said, I have said my piece. I appreciate the point upthread that the OP may not address her sister using male pronouns. I hope she doesn't, because she will not be listened to if she does and it will damage their relationship.

CatherinedeBourgh · 16/10/2023 21:21

I'm going to ignore the politics here as this is important.

My friend's child transitioned from male to female. They were given anti psychotics along with the hormones as apparently an adult suddenly taking large quantities of hormones can destabilise the brain. They stopped taking the anti psychotics for a while and ended up sectioned and severely unwell.

This has to be done under medical supervision.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 16/10/2023 21:24

@RealTopekaPeople

Don't you see its you who's stereotypical about gender?

You can be whoever you want to be, like what you like dress how you want to dress, but your chromosomes will not change.

There's some kind of evil going on here.

And why say that we will be cut off of we refuse to lie to our children? To validate them in their choice to chase the impossible? Why cut off? Nothing else is an instant cut off. Why this?

Family is important. Why the need to cut them off if they disagree? So, so wierd. And evil.

OK, step back for a minute. Whatever your position on the gender debate might be, surely anyone can see that this is not good, not healthy for anyone, adult or minor. When did it become normalised to be so dissociated from our bodies that anybody could ever think that this kind of invasive intervention could be justifiable?
