AIBU to believe FIL time slip experience?

elsiesbonnet · 15/10/2023 20:06

FIL was round yesterday evening for dinner with his wife. We were talking about the Uncanny podcast & recent TV episode then he told us of two experiences he'd had in the same place a number of years apart. After I went & did some research & asked a couple questions today, he's told us of another experience he had in the same place that was similar to one of the other experiences but that happened when he as a child.

I'm quite sceptical about paranormal type events I guess because I've never witnessed anything myself but am generally quite open minded. I don't believe FIL to be the type to make this sort of thing up & he was almost unwilling to tell us in case we thought he was crazy. He's never told anyone before.

AIBU to think what he experienced could've been real? In one of the instances he interacted with people in the past, his recall was quite genuine & he had some significant detail that you couldn't just make up. Has anyone else experienced a time slip or some other paranormal event they couldn't explain? I'm intrigued!

If time travel was real, don't you think we would all know someone from the future, or Hitler would have been executed by a Jewish person, or we would have been warned about covid/Spanish flu/chernobyl/etc

I think this has been addressed many times in the Grandfather paradox

I've had loads of premonitions throughout my life. In fact when I'm stressed about something I kind of try to "feel" the future and usually get a flash of something.

I know people might think I'm crazy, but all my premonitions have come true so now I just keep it to myself. Never really mention it to anyone at all.

As a result I don't think time is linear - I think everything has already happened and the way we experience time passing (past, present, future) is a bit of an illusion.

There's lots of really interesting physics podcasts I've listened to on time. The reality is no one knows for sure how time works!

I'm the exact same with premonitions and feeling the future - very handy when I'm stressed, I tune in and know something's going to be okay.. Less nice when I know it's not :-(

You didn't see yourself in the future. You had a dream.

Right! If you had 'slipped' into another time you wouldn't be observing yourself and be so clear on what your hair and body and clothing looked like because you'd be IN your body.

stop, there are many reasons eg star trek with the prime directive with time travel, think about the computer game series command and conquer, change history and its a ripple in the pond of time etc

It maybe it isn't time travel at all but like I said in my post above, the equivalent of watching an immerisve video. A recording by the universe of something that happened before So it's set in stone and you can't alter it any more than you could alter the film you are watching on TV.

Even if time travel does exist, it's likely that its laws in some way prohibit interfering with what happened before - whether that's because you subscribe to the idea that each moment is like a fan with millions of co-existing alternate moments - so out there are millions of people co-existing in a world where Hitler died of typhoid aged 12 or something - or because that it is something the laws of physics prevent in someway - like you can't stop gravity from making the apple hit the ground.

"The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene

Brian Greene offers a captivating journey through space and time, discussing the nature of reality and the mysteries of the universe.

"The Order of Time" by Carlo Rovelli

Carlo Rovelli examines the nature of time, its relativity, and how our understanding of it is evolving through the lens of modern physics.

"Warp: The Relentless Pursuit" by Michio Kaku

This book explores the concept of warp drive and the potential for faster-than-light travel, which is a popular topic in science fiction and theoretical physics.

"Time Travel: A History" by James Gleick

James Gleick explores the history and cultural aspects of time travel, providing a unique perspective on the concept.

"How to Build a Time Machine" by Paul Davies

Physicist Paul Davies discusses the science and philosophy of time travel, including the feasibility of building a time machine.

"Time Travel in Einstein's Universe: The Physical Possibilities of Travel Through Time" by J. Richard Gott

This book explores the theoretical possibilities of time travel based on Einstein's theories of relativity.

"Parallel Worlds" by Michio Kaku

Michio Kaku discusses the concept of parallel universes and their implications for our understanding of space, time, and reality.

Julian Barbour challenges our conventional understanding of time and explores a timeless universe.

These books offer a blend of scientific exploration and speculative ideas related to time and space, making them suitable for someone with a background in theoretical physics who wants to dive deeper into these fascinating topics.

Edited

Thanks for those recommendations- I’ve only read the Rovelli book (which I really enjoyed)

The grandfather paradox centres this round tge lack of free will I recall.

Plus Time travel is a fascinating idea, but it comes with a lot of tricky problems and moral questions. It might seem cool to prevent bad things from happening in the past, but it could also lead to some really unexpected and confusing stuff. Think of it like this: what if you went back in time and accidentally stopped your own grandparents from meeting? That could mean you'd never be born!

People love to write stories and make movies about time travel because it lets them explore all these complicated ideas. It's like a big puzzle that keeps our imaginations running.

i bet humanity has only understood 0.1% of whats achievable

Hardtime · 15/10/2023 22:53

I was driving my car, close to my home when the engine suddenly died. A BT workman had a wi-fi broadcasting box open and looked over sheepishly. The man had disappeared by the time the AA arrived and after some random (and entirely incorrect suggestions) we rolled the car twenty yards back down the hill and the engine started easily.
I'm sure that some kind of pulse that would normally be shielded by the BT cabinet being closed, interfered with the electronics in the car, stopping it in its tracks.
I wonder if these 'timeslips' are caused by electronic or magnetic fields interfering with people's brains and inducing hallucinations?
For those asking why those having these experiences don't use mobile phones or cameras, a relative recently suffered a brain injury which resulted in unusual language and perception affects that caused his friends to call an ambulance. The friends were surprised to be asked by the doctors if they'd filmed the affects - as though it was entirely normal to start filming someone you are having a conversation with.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/10/2023 22:57

My experience of woo stuff is that it comes unbidden & without warning; therefore if my stuff is real timetravel it's not possible to decide to go to a particular time, & then go there & do something, as someone suggested upthread.

Roughly half of mine are about things which happened within 24 hours, but I've had three such things which took years to come true. It's like I know at the time that something is significant & that makes it stick in my mind, but I've no idea what it relates to until the real life situation comes along.

I had something not completely unlike this happen today on a smaller scale.

I was on the sofa this eve writing a shopping list and toddler DS was toddling in and out of the living room. Not unusual, the flat is quite well baby-proofed, and he's free to go between the living room and his bedroom.

Out of nowhere I was overcome with an all encompassing and terrifying urge to run like fuck and find him even though I'd only seen him a few seconds prior. I've never had a feeling like that before and it was completely out of the blue

I shot up like a bolt of lightning and found him in the bathroom, stood on his toddler steps leaning over the (full) bath that I had run ready to get into once DH returned from the shop.

After running the bath I had most definitely closed the door and clicked it shut. DS cannot reach the handle. I had no reason to worry or suspect he'd be able to get into that bathroom. But he did.

In hindsight my older DC must have opened it but the thought wouldn't have even crossed my mind, yet alarm bells went off in my head and, like your mums story, it was almost as if a voice was shouting "get DS NOW!"

So I'm not sure about paranormal involvement but mother's intuition is definitely a thing.

There's a fascinating book, and I forget the name of it, that talks about things like this, and how essentially our sub conscious recognises things without us realising. So in this instance, you probably heard something - the door opening, or the sound of your toddler getting on his stool. Something that your sub conscious registered and didn't have time to translate to "wait, what was that sound? Oh, it sounded like the bathroom door" and instead, because it signalled danger, just translated it to "get him, NOW" (I mean, essentially intuition, but the book talks about how it's grounded in something real that we notice without realising we've noticed it)

There is a long, long way between "this may in theory not be impossible because there is a lot of theoretical physics we haven't yet explored and don't understand" and "Fountains Abbey disappeared for a bit." A long way.

Yes of course. But nevertheless, not impossible. 🙂

BarryK3nt · 15/10/2023 23:03

YANBU there are a lot of experiences people have that we can’t account for, and that is ok. I think sometimes we just have to accept it and not desperately try to rationalise everything.

Think about it. There would be no masts.

Your phone doesn't need mobile service to record or take a photo. If the device is in your pocket, so are its lenses, microphone and memory chips.

Mumsgirls · 15/10/2023 23:05

The fact that that you had all been watching Uncanny is an indicator , that you are open to this nonsense in the first place.

Or open to the possibility that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in your philosophy

@elsiesbonnet Bold St is known for time slips. I go loads and never experienced one, think it would scare me to death! I have read about other people’s experiences there. My hairdresser is there and I always hope nothing happens when I go to the loo in the shop!

Whenever I'm there I yearn for a temporary time slip! It would be amazing. There has been mention in the past of the phenomena being liked to electro magnetic currents from nearby Central Station. I'm a total believer in time slips though.

I don't think he has a mh condition like bi-polar or schizophrenia etcHmm It doesn't sound anything like a psychotic condition.

However, I now seem to recall that this might be associated with a mild epileptic fit. I would suggest he keeps a record, and if it repeats itself more than once, consult his GP.

nebulae · 15/10/2023 23:29

I think it's possible time slips could be responsible for many so called "paranormal" events. Ghosts, cryptids, UAPs, premonitions etc.

And before the naysayers jump on me, please let me underline that I said "it's possible".
